Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology

Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology

Alexander Hamilton; Robert P. Watson

Written by Hamilton himself to confess to the affair he conducted with Maria Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology is Hamilton’s attempt to defend and rationalize his misdoings, and ultimately salvage what was left of his reputation. The pamphlet was originally published in 1796 after accusations of the adultery arose. This personal exposé reveals a man, whom the public initially revered as a politician and Founding Father, as a flawed human-being. Within these documents Hamilton describes his exploits in impeccable detail and languid prose, at the risk of tarnishing his public image, to prove to the public that he had nothing to hide. With a new foreword by Robert Watson, presidential scholar and author of Affairs of State, delve into this exquisite, essential account of history’s most scandalous love affairs.

WITH A FOREWORD FROM SIR ALAN BATES 'A story of decency and courage in the face of a shameful miscarriage of justice', Lorraine Kelly 'Incredible', The Times Jo Hamilton was one of more than 700 sub-postmasters prosecuted between 2000 and 2014 based on information from the Post Office's faulty Horizon accounting system. She was told to put right a wrong she hadn't committed and pushed to the very brink of her existence - remortgaging her house, borrowing from anyone she could in order to repay money that she hadn't taken, and questioning her own sanity. Immortalised in ITV smash hit drama, Mr Bates v The Post Office, this is Jo Hamilton's extraordinary first-hand account of how she built a Post Office that was at the very heart of her community and lost it all through no fault of her own. For the first time, beyond the headlines and the corridors of the Old Bailey and the UK's political institutions, we will finally hear Jo's full story and the human side of this scandal as well as the untold struggle she faced during the biggest miscarriages of justice in modern history. Ultimately, this is a story of hope and the strength of community and the ability of a few to fight back against the odds.
The Hamilton Letters
Sir William Hamilton personified the age of the Enlightenment - a collector and connoisseur, amateur scientist and archaeologist, vulcanologist, anthropologist and above all a gentleman of taste and intellectual curiosity - and in Naples, one of the most fascinating stations on the Grand Tour, he had found his ideal setting. As King George III's ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples from 1764-1800, Sir William was witness to some pivotal events in European history. "The Hamilton Letters" is the first collection of his complete correspondence with the English court between 1797 and 1799. It sheds vivid light on the history of the kingdom of Naples on the cusp of the Napoleonic Wars as France and Spain jostled for control in the region as well as on the nature of power and government at the end of the 18th century. Included here is Sir William's own account of Nelson's betrayal of the Neapolitan Republic when, rather than granting the royalist leaders safe passage back to France as agreed, Nelson turned his guns on them - a hugely controversial decision, both for contemporary audiences and ever since, and one in which Sir William's own role is still hotly contested." The Hamilton Letters" offers an engaging portrait of a complex and sophisticated figure and brings a dynamic period of history to life. It is an invaluable guide to the period which will enthrall anyone interested in the colourful world of 19th-century European history.

'That rare treasure, a perfect novel' TIME A name is the first story that attaches itself to a life. Consider mine: Stanley Alban Marriott Obeysekere. It tells of geography, history, love and uncertainty. Stanley Obeysekere, a wealthy lawyer in colonial Ceylon, is a staunch believer in British justice. When the murder of a tea planter baffles the island, he seizes the chance to solve the case, securing fame as 'our Sherlock Holmes'. But his triumph comes at a price. With devastating precision, Michelle de Kretser traces the disintegration of a man, a family and a society as change arrives and the empire crumbles. A dazzling and savage novel.
Bill Hamilton on the Western Frontier
My Sixty Years on the Plains, A Trapping Expedition, 1848-9 & A Trading Expedition among the Indians in 1858 Three essential and riveting first-hand accounts by a renowned frontiersman William (Bill) Hamilton was born in the Cheviot Hills on the English/Scottish border. His parents emigrated to America, eventually settling in St Louis, Missouri. At just twenty years of age, he accompanied a trading expedition among the Indians. They first traded with the Cheyennes, near the present site of Denver, then with the Shoshones on the Sweetwater and afterwards upon Green River and at the mouth of the Little Snake. This period of his life, which includes many fierce encounters with hostile tribes, occupies much of the content of the principal text. When he heard of the gold discoveries in California, Hamilton travelled with a party down the Humboldt River, reaching California in 1840. It is from this period forward that the rare second piece in this edition is drawn. Local Indian outrages motivated him to join the 'Buck-skin Rangers' with other trappers as an Indian fighter, seeing action against the Tar- head and other tribes. In 1858 Hamilton also fought in the Yakima and Spokane War serving as a scout. At that war's conclusion, the army despatched him on a trading and intelligence gathering mission to the tribes east of Walla Walla and beyond the Rocky Mountains. It is the author's account of that period which forms the third and also rarely published work in this edition. This additional material contributes an approximately further 40% of invaluable narrative to this version of Hamilton's book. After another period of trading Hamilton became a sheriff and a deputy United States Marshal. He then joined Crook in the Sioux War of 1876 as a scout and was conspicuous in the fight at the Middle Fork of Powder River. Hamilton retired to the Yellowstone Valley, Montana. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
