One World and Our Knowledge of It

One World and Our Knowledge of It

Philosophy, Aristotle is well known to have said, begins in wonder. So, of course, does everything else. Astronomy begins in wonder at the moving lights in the sky; biology, in wonder at the living creatures of the earth; psychology, in wonder at the intricacies and eccentricities of our distinctively human form of life. So, at best, wonder is only a necessary condition for philosophy. What. is peculiar about philosophers is what we are inclined to wonder about. We wonder about everything. In particular, we wonder about astron omy and biology and psychology (and about philosophy) - about whether and how such disciplines are possible and, crucially, about whether and how such disciplines fit together. We don't just wonder about everything. We wonder about everything all at once. Philosophers are general practitioners. Things stand ill with our disciplme today. There was quite recently at large in America an occasional publication under the title Jobs in Philosophy. The title rested upon a confusion, and the publication furthered the confusion upon which it rested. For it did not, in fact, list jobs in philosophy. It couldn't.
Partial Differential Control Theory
The mathematical theory of "open" dynamical systems is a creation of the twentieth century. Its humble beginnings focused on ideas of Laplace transforms applied to linear problems of automatic control and to the analysis and synthesis of electrical circuits. However during the second half of the century, it flowered into a field based on an array of sophisticated mathematical concepts and techniques from algebra, nonlinear analysis and differential geometry. The central notion is that of a dynamical system that exchanges matter, energy, or information with its surroundings, i.e. an "open" dynamical system. The mathema tization of this notion evolved considerably over the years. The early development centered around the input/output point of view and led to important results, particularly in controller design. Thinking about open systems as a "black box" that accepts stimuli and produces responses has had a wide influence also in areas outside engineering, for example in biology, psychology, and economics. In the early 1960's, especially through the work of Kalman, input/state/output models came in vogue. This model class accommodates very nicely the internal initial conditions that are essentially always present in a dynamical system. The introduction of input/state/output models led to a tempestuous development that made systems and control into a mature discipline with a wide range of concepts, results, algorithms, and applications.
Polymer Photodegradation

Polymer Photodegradation

J.F. Rabek

Springer

nidottu
During the last two decades, the production of polymers and plastics has been increasing rapidly. In spite of developing new polymers and polymeric materials, only 40~60 are used commercially on a large scale. It has been estimated that half of the annual production of polymers is employed outdoors. The photochemical instability of most polymers limits their outdoor application as they are photodegraded quickly over periods from months to a few years. To the despair of technologists and consumers alike, photodegradation and environmental ageing of polymers occur much faster than can be expected from knowledge collected in laboratories. In order to improve polymer photostability there has been a very big effort during the last 30 years to understand the mechanisms involved in photodegradation and environmental ageing. This book represents the author's attempt, based on his 25 years' experience in research on photodegradation and photo stabilization, to collect and generalize a number of available data on the photodegradation of polymers. The space limitation and the tremendous number of publications in the past two decades have made a detailed presentation of all important results and data difficult. The author apologizes to those whose work has not been quoted or widely presented in this book. Because many published results are very often contradictory, it has been difficult to present a fully critical review of collected knowledge, without antagonizing authors. For that reason, all available theories, mechanisms and different suggestions have been presented together, and only practice can evaluate which of them are valid.

The thesis of this book is that while traditional industrial robotics may currently be languishing in the technological doldrums, the way now lies open for robots and roboticists to exploit an almost limitless range of potential applications in the expanding service sector of the economy.
The Treatment of Obesity

The Treatment of Obesity

J.F. Munro

Springer

nidottu
During the last few years, there has been growing medical interest in the problem of obesity. Although this may not have resulted in a dramatic breakthrough in our understanding of the condition, at least we are now more aware of our ignorance. Possibly this partly explains the increasing medical concern for, and sympathy in, the management of the obese. In the introductory chapter, John Garrow says that he believes it would be better to treat a few people well than many subjects unsuccessfully. This theme is developed in those chapters which deal with specific forms of therapy including exercise, protein-sparing fasting and bypass surgery, while the chapters on pharmacological agents review our knowledge, and our ignorance, of the mode of action and efficacy of the currently available drugs. Almost in contrast, the chapter on behavioural therapy and group therapy suggests that obesity is a problem which could best be tackled on a community basis. Clearly such an approach is very attractive, and the combination of behavioural therapy and slimming organizations would appear to offer the best prospects of controlling most subjects' weight problems. There will always remain, however, the individual patient in whom there will be a place for the various special techniques now available. It is hoped that this book will contribute to a greater understanding of the various problems faced by the obese, and the regimes that can be offered. J. F. Octavia: The Octoroon by J. F. Lee is a powerful and tragic novel that delves into the painful realities of race, identity, and forbidden love in 19th-century America. Centered on Octavia, a woman of mixed heritage caught between two worlds, the novel explores the social and moral conflicts surrounding slavery, colorism, and the rigid racial boundaries of the antebellum South. Through vivid characterization and emotional depth, Lee exposes the cruelty of racial injustice and the human cost of systemic oppression. The novel's dramatic portrayal of love constrained by prejudice serves as both a social critique and a deeply personal story of courage, longing, and loss. Originally published during an era of intense racial division, Octavia: The Octoroon remains a significant early contribution to the literature addressing race and identity in America. It continues to resonate as a haunting exploration of humanity, inequality, and resilience.
