Introduction to the English Monastic Breviaries

Introduction to the English Monastic Breviaries

J.b.l. Tolhurst

pokkari
A guide to breviaries (monastic service books containing the Divine Office) in late medieval England. During the Middle Ages, the Divine Office, or daily round of prayers, formed the central focus of the monastic life. The liturgical book which contained all the prayers, hymns, etc. which were said at each office during the year is the breviary. The present volume is widely acknowledged as the best introduction available in English to the complex structure of the Office. Initially the Benedictine Office is considered, followed by an assessment of the numerous additions and alterations which occured during the early medieval period. To conclude there is a detailed discussion of the structure of various individual offices in late medieval England as they are known from surviving breviaries. Throughout, the language has been kept plain and non-technical to make it accessible to all students of the middle ages.

A Dictionary of the Proper Names of the Old and New Testament Scriptures
Biblical scholar and author J. B. Jackson offers here an A to Z list of names found in the Old and New Testament Bible scriptures, together with their meanings. Inclusive of the etymology of the Bible's names, this superb book tells us straightforwardly what the various Hebrew names mean. Learning what these monikers mean sheds light on the truth and purpose of the Biblical books and stories. The alphabetical arrangement of this book makes it easy to look up a given name; each is rendered in bold, with the meaning following in plain text. The beginning of the book features a brief explanation of Hebrew grammar and how the language's structures can be understood in English. The reader is given a useful primer on Hebrew linguistics, and the pronunciation of its words. Emphasis is placed on how all Bible scholars have to master their interpretation of not simply names, but the essence and spirit of the canon. Knowing what the names of Bible figures mean is an initial step toward knowing and - in the case of translation - preserving the literal meaning and gracefulness of scripture. An author of several books concerning Biblical lore, J. B. Jackson was popular during the early 20th century. While most of his writings are today out of print, this guide remains popular for its accuracy and accessibility.
Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina
Filled with local stories and dramatic scenes of fighting from across many decades, J. B. O. Landrum's chronicle of South Carolina is a treasure of the past. The author is enthusiastic in presenting accounts which encapsulate the local Carolina spirit; tales of hardship amid an unforgiving wilderness, of brutal combat between the Native Americans and the white settlers, and of everyday living in the villages and townships of the various counties. War stories and dramatic events are commonly taken from recollections of descendants and written anecdotes; such sources make for a lively and thoroughly engaging history of how South Carolina came to be.By the time he wrote this history in 1897, J. B. O. Landrum was already respected as a writer and chronicler of the past. Locals in and around the Carolinas would, from time to time, send him pertinent material. This edition includes the original publication's maps of the locality, so that readers can understand where settlements stood in the grand scheme of things, and how troops moved around during the conflicts. For its unique storytelling and knowledge, this history retains much value for modern day readers.

The Greatness of Gratitude takes a naked look at what it means to live a thankful life. It reminds us that while we have little or no control over many of the things that come our way, we have power and governance over how we react to them. This book provokes us to evaluate how we treat each other, manage our relationships, and utilize our time. It moves us to consider the biblical foundation for gratitude and the discipline and intricacies of living a gracefully grateful life. It moves the reader to live thoughtfully and thankfully so that gratitude becomes the dominant thread that is woven in the fabric of his life.
