An exhilarating romp through Victorian London and 1920s Boston, as fact and fantasy are merged, moulded together, and then torn apart again all for your entertainment and delectation! Mary Kelly had picked up the name 'Marie-Jeanette' while staying in Paris. Had the latter got into some kind of trouble while staying in this city and had the killer then followed her into London's East End? The Whitechapel Murders took place over a period of a little more than two months and ended just as swiftly as they had started. Had the assailant taken the lives of his other victims so as to cover his own tracks or had it been a case of mistaken identity? In this book I make the case that a close relative of the Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec took the law into their own hands when they discovered the artist was dying of syphilis. Having obtained the suspect woman's name from one of Lautrec's letters to his own mother, she was finally tracked down to 13, Miller's Court.

In 1888 the name Jack the Ripper entered public consciousness with the brutal murders of women in the East End of London. The murderer was never caught, yet film and television depicts a killer with a recognisable costume, motive and persona. This book examines the origins of the screen presentation of the four key elements associated with the murders – Jack the Ripper, the victims, the detective and Whitechapel. Nineteenth-century history, art and literature, psychoanalytical theories of Freud and Jung and feminist film theory are all used to deconstruct the representation of Jack the Ripper on screen.
Jack Kerouac's Buddhism and the American Search for Enlightenment
Sarah F. Haynes provides a detailed analysis of Jack Kerouac’s unpublished diaries and Buddhist writing alongside the Buddhism presented in his published works. Kerouac’s involvement with Buddhism is traditionally accepted to have occurred between 1953-1958. However, his unpublished diaries reveal that he continued to write about Buddhism until at least 1967. Haynes’ comparative analysis of Kerouac's unpublished documents provides a richer and more complete understanding of Kerouac's Buddhist practice. She reflects on the differences between the themes in Kerouac’s published and unpublished Buddhism, arguing that Kerouac’s Buddhism is based in his search for stability, which is contradictory to the messages in his published works. Kerouac’s unpublished writings reveal his inability to actualize the lifestyle he promoted. Despite this conflict, however, the impact and legacy of Kerouac’s religious vision on the development of Buddhism in America is significant.
