La rupture entre Freud et Jung est generalement attribuee a leur desaccord concernant l'importance jouee par la sexualite dans les affections psychiques et les productions culturelles. Quelle que soit la pertinence d'une telle interpretation aux enjeux manifestement fondamentaux pour la theorie freudienne, elle est loin de constituer le paradigme essentiel qui a conduit a leur rupture. Jacquy Chemouni montre dans cette etude que l'impossible accord entre le maitre de Vienne et l'eleve de Zurich reside dans le role que chacun alloue a la mythologie. Sans que les protagonistes en aient eu clairement conscience, la conception jungienne de la mythologie vient non seulement subvertir les acquis theoriques de la psychanalyse mais, plus fondamentalement, ebranle la demarche clinique freudienne et devient un outil incontournable dans le travail therapeutique. Loin de cantonner le mythe a un objet scientifique, une sorte de lettre morte laissee au compte du mythologue, Jung l'apprehende, initialement grace a l'apport de la psychanalyse, comme une realite vivante encore susceptible de marquer les esprits et de faconner la psyche. Jung est soucieux de ne pas demythologiser la psyche et ses analyses n'ont pas pour finalite d'abolir les croyances au mythe mais d'en assurer la survivance. Freud, plus rationaliste, pense a l'inverse qu'il faut extraire l'homme des croyances mythiques. Les travaux sur les pathologies psychotiques menes par les plus brillants eleves de Jung, principalement Johann Jacob Honegger, Jan Nelken et Sabina Spielrein, vont confirmer la conviction du fondateur de la psychologie analytique que la psyche de ses contemporains est nourrie de mythes ancestraux dont ils n'ont jamais eu connaissance de quelque maniere que ce soit. Se dessine alors un nouveau paradigme qui rendra la psychanalyse freudienne et la psychologie analytique radicalement etrangeres l'une a l'autre.
