Inalienable Properties

Inalienable Properties

Jamie Baxter

University of British Columbia Press
2021
pokkari
As many Indigenous communities return to self-governance and self-determination, they are taking their own approaches to property rights and community development. Based on case studies in four Indigenous communities – the Westbank, Membertou, Nisga'a, and James Bay Cree nations – Jamie Baxter traces how local leaders have set the course for land rights and development during formative periods of legal and economic upheaval. Drawing on new research about institutional change in organizational settings, Baxter explores when and how community leaders have sustained inalienable land rights without turning to either persuasion or coercive force – the two levers of power normally associated with political leadership.Inalienable Properties challenges the view that liberalized land markets are the inevitable result of legal and economic change. It shows how inalienability can result from intentional choices and is linked to structures of decision-making that have long-lasting consequences for communities.

Minor League All-Star Teams, 1922-1962

Long before strip malls, television and huge retail chains homogenized American culture, minor league baseball clubs represented individual, local ideals. Fans turned out in droves to see their hometown heroes, and teams were sources of civic pride and popular recreation. Gradually, these teams and leagues were either driven under or swallowed up by baseball's vertical integration, and by 1963 a significant piece of the American landscape had all but disappeared. This heavily researched reference work covers every official minor league All-Star team from 1922 (when the first such team was named) to 1962 (the last year of the AAA-D classification system). Each entry includes the full roster of an All-Star team, complete individual hitting and pitching statistics, and detailed commentary on the selections. Where sabermetrics indicate more-deserving players were passed over, the author presents the case for alternative candidates.
The Intelligence War in Latin America, 1914-1922
World War I did not bypass Latin America. Within days of the war's outbreak, European belligerents mobilized intelligence assets and secret diplomacy to compete for Latin America's allegiances and resources. This intelligence war entangled all of the American republics and even Japan. Dreary consular offices from the Rio Grande to the Straits of Magellan were abruptly thrust into covert activities, trafficking in fugitives, running contraband and conducting sabotage. Revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements, big oil, international banks and businesses were also drawn in. Drawing on long-classified U.S. intelligence documents, this narrative of the Latin American intelligence war reveals the complexity and chaos behind the placid veneer of wartime Pan-America. The author connects the dots between Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Guatemala City, Lima, Havana, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin, London, Washington, Tokyo and dozens of safe houses, front companies, consulates, legations and headquarters in between. Scores of unrecognized veterans of the intelligence war are revealed.

Dorothy Lee is best remembered for her screen appearances with the popular comedy team of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey. She went from being a struggling vaudeville performer to the female vocalist in one of the most successful bands in the country to a star in the new-fangled "talking pictures" all within the span of a few short years. During the Great Depression, she lived a fairy-tale existence, rubbing shoulders with Hollywood luminaries and earning an income that most people could only dream of. She retired and balanced domestic life with charity work. And she saw, to her amazement, a revived interest in the movie career she had written off long ago. Based on years of conversations between the authors and Dorothy Lee, this book is an informative biography filled with revealing insights on navigating the studio system during Hollywood's Golden Age and the ephemeral nature of fame.
Performing Queer Female Identity on Screen

Performing Queer Female Identity on Screen

Jamie Stuart

McFarland Co Inc

pokkari
Film audiences have grown used to seeing female characters in "performance roles," singing or dancing on stages in nightclubs, musical arenas, or theaters--performing their "femaleness" for the fictional audience as well as the film viewing audience. But queer women in film perform on yet another level. In addition to performing their gender for the world, they also perform their sexuality for either a general or an "insider" audience, in ways that can be read to establish a queer visibility, to establish a sense of community, or to show romantic lesbian interest. This work examines "performance spaces" for lesbian identities in films, evaluating how queer femaleness is signified in contemporary cinema. It studies five films in particular: When Night Is Falling, Better Than Chocolate, Tipping the Velvet, Slaves to the Underground, and Prey for Rock and Roll. Through close textual analysis, evaluations of the conditions under which each film was produced and received, and dozens of audience surveys, it reveals much about both the story worlds of the films and the ways that queer women react to and feel about them.

Principals Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson delight in creating imaginative rooms that emphasize the precious alongside the everyday. Drake is known for his fearless use of color as well as his fashion-conscious sensibility. Anderson is lauded for his layered approach and the confidence with which he juxtaposes a variety of historic periods. While firmly focused on contemporary design, their work harkens back to the legendary designers and decorators of yesterday. Drake/Anderson s deeply informed yet accessible modernist sensibility is exemplified by eleven remarkable residences, from Manhattan to London to Arizona, in a full spectrum of rich jewel tones and textures. In an aerie with panoramic views, the pair devised a platinum-and-pearl backdrop for a provocative potpourri of materials wood, lacquer, stone, gypsum, glass, velvet, leather, mirror, and bronze. Whether refashioning a private oasis in the woods, where contemporary pieces mix with custom items of the firm s design, or bringing a stately 1910 house fully into the present by amalgamating the owners antiques with modern and contemporary art, Drake/Anderson embraces a dynamic eclecticism all its own.

Desperate to bring an end to the Pacific Theater in World War II, the United States unleashed the most powerful and deadly bomb known to humankind at the time. The atomic bomb was a marvel of modern science, but it left a devastating imprint on the world - particularly in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese cities that were chosen as sites for the attacks. The loss of life in these cities was catastrophic. Hundreds of thousands were killed or sickened from exposure to the radiation. More than 60 years after the bombs were dropped, the use of atomic weapons is still debated among nations. ""The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki"" examines the reasons for using the bombs and the outcomes of their use.
