Jesus and the Jews

Jesus and the Jews

Alan Watson

University of Georgia Press
2012
pokkari
In Jesus and the Jews, Alan Watson reveals and substantiates a central yet previously unrecognized source for the composition of the Gospel of John. Strikingly antithetical to John’s basic message, this source originated from an anti-Christian tradition promulgated by the Pharisees, the powerful and dogmatic teachers of Jewish law. The aims of this Pharisaic tradition, argues Watson, included discrediting Jesus as the Messiah, minimizing his historical importance, and justifying the Jewish authorities’ role in his death. Jesus and the Jews joins three other works by Watson—The Trial of Jesus, Jesus and the Law, and Jesus: A Profile—to examine the early dynamism of western religion through refocused attention on biblical texts and other historical sources.

Jesus and the Law

Alan Watson

pokkari
In Jesus and the Law, Alan Watson measures the success of Jesus’s ministry by explaining his attitude toward, and knowledge of, certain laws and legal customs. Watson argues that Jesus engendered harsh responses from his fellow Jews by his apparently contemptuous or insensitive behavior that stemmed from a lack of knowledge or concern about legal and rabbinic strictures. Informed by Watson’s knowledge of Jewish and Roman law and ancient history, and his skillful relation of Mishnaic and Talmudic materials to the time of Jesus, this book is more than a vivid retelling of the events of the Gospels. Jesus and the Law joins three other works by Watson—The Trial of Jesus, Jesus and the Jews, and Jesus: A Profile—to examine the early dynamism of western religion through refocused attention on biblical texts and other historical sources.

Not since Fulton Sheen's majestic A Life of Christ has a writer captured for his time the beauty, the power, and the holiness of Jesus. But more than this, Jean Vanier writes with a go-to-the-heart simplicity that makes the man Jesus come alive in all his humanity, revealing his immense goodness and his bountiful love for everyone he meets. This book is the story of Jesus as it is told in the four Gospels, brought together into one meditation. The author says that, ""Together they give a clear portrait of Jesus as he was and as he lived, a clear vision of his message. From his conception to his death and resurrection, we see a man manifestly sent by God to reveal God, to point to a way of universal love, of truth, of justice, and of peace."

In this book Raymund Schwager surveys the church's christological tradition and proposes an understanding of Jesus that is informed by a conversation with the great theologians and leaders of the past and influenced by two contemporary pioneers in Christian thought: Hans Urs von Balthasar, known for his ""theodramatic"" approach, and Rene Girard, widely recognized for his mimetic scapegoat theory. The result is both a convincing scholarly picture of Jesus in relation to his Jewish historical context and to the beginnings of the Christian community and a coherent message of Jesus as God's word of salvation to humankind.

Jesus' Twin

Jesus' Twin

James W. Heisig

In Jesus' Twin, a scholar shares his personal reflections into the Gospel of Thomas offering a learned, accessible introduction as well as inspiring insights into these ancient texts that have long stirred curiosity and inquiry. James Heisig, who has read and studied the texts throughout his distinguished career as a scholar and teacher of religions, shows that the reasons for excluding the Gospel of Thomas from the Christian tradition are largely meaningless for us today. After more than half a century of concerted dialogue with other traditions, we are in a better position to recognize that not every alter Jesus is a Jesus alias. At the same time, attention to the spiritual demands being made on Christianity by our present age helps draw us more deeply into the text itself and control the tendency to immunize ourselves against its discomforts, whether through the distractions of scholarly disputation or the preoccupation with preserving orthodoxy.

"This is a book that brings Jesus out of the headlines and back into our hearts." --Pastor Josh Burtram and Will Wright, hosts of the Faithful Politics podcast It's easy to fall into the trap of perceiving God in our own image. We expect Jesus to fit into the molds we create, and we see him through our own biased filters. This skewed vision of our Savior is damaging both to us and to nonbelievers. But how do we remove our cultural and personal blinders in order to see Jesus for who he really was? Tapping into the expertise of nineteen unique, theologically trained voices, Jesus Was illuminates the personality, actions, and character of Jesus as found in the biblical accounts of his life on earth. These concise and insightful reflections help us recognize our misconceptions so that we can clearly see the One we follow, and experience the incredible life and heart changes that come with knowing him fully. "In this refreshing and insightful book, we are confronted with who Jesus actually was, the real deal according to Scripture. This Jesus wants to remake us in his image--and not the other way around." --Nijay K. Gupta, Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary

Jesus and the Gospel Movement

Jesus and the Gospel Movement

William Thompson-Uberuaga

University of Missouri Press
2006
sidottu
The disciples - Mary Magdalene, and Lazarus. The New Testament tells of Jesus, to be sure, but it is a Jesus depicted in interaction with many other people. Far too often, Jesus has been studied in isolation rather than as a person sharing relationships. This book seeks to rediscover Jesus in relation to the movement beginning to form around him. One of the few books to explore fully the political dimensions of the emerging church, ""Jesus and the Gospel Movement"" brings studies of Jesus and Christology into dialogue with today's social and political sciences. William Thompson-Uberuaga seeks to penetrate the mist surrounding the historical Jesus by inviting readers to imagine him through the perspective of his relationships and to consider how those relationships helped shape his personality and commitments - not just the intellectual aspects but also his feelings, his affectionate bonds, and the reciprocal bonds he stimulated in others. This extended meditation represents the first book-length engagement with Voegelin scholarship on these issues, and scholars in Voegelin studies will find a challenging appropriation of that thinker's political philosophy. It also draws on insights of other philosophers ranging from Nietzsche to Derrida, with a particular emphasis on Gadamer's hermeneutical thought. Useful for courses in Jesus studies, Christology, and Christianity and politics, the text also features an internet link to supplements accompanying each chapter, which have been written by the author especially for this book to enable students and readers to delve deeper into the thicket of scholarly debates concerning these issues. Thompson-Uberuaga asks readers to imagine the various beliefs about Jesus as the result of forms of participation, helping us make sense of how they emerged and offering a way of evaluating their validity - and arguing that we will form only a narrow, even lopsided, view of Jesus if we consider him apart from his relationships. By daring a personal interpretation of Jesus and the Gospel movement that he and his companions originated, this book boldly challenges readers to risk their own interpretations and arrive at their own understanding of the Messiah.
