This book examines patterns of political engagement of long-term unemployed youth. The authors show how unemployment affects the personal, social, and political life of young people. Focusing on the case of Geneva in Switzerland, the study shows the importance of socioeconomic, relational, psychological, and institutional resources for the political engagement of unemployed youth. The book shows specifically how the relationship between unemployment and the political engagement of unemployed youth is mediated by a number of factors: their socioeconomic status and more generally their individual background, their level of deprivation and the associated degree of subjective well-being; the social capital that unemployed youth draw from involvement in voluntary associations and interpersonal networks and relations, and the political learning stemming from interactions with welfare institutions and their perception of such interactions. Students and scholars in areas including Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Youth Studies and Social Policy will find this study of interest.

In the early 21st century, radically changing work locations and patterns have jolted society to reflect more on the ways that employment affects the body and the mind. This book provides historical context and insights to aid our understanding of this contemporary crisis, critically examining the history of a neglected area.In this oral-history based study, Arthur McIvor explores the history of health and safety from Second World War to the present, drawing extensively upon workers' own personal stories of occupational accidents, disasters, injury, disease, overwork and disability. It covers a wide range of workplace issues, from stories of TNT poisoning and overwork in wartime, through to the asbestos and black lung disasters, and the modern-day ‘epidemics’ of stress, burn-out and Covid-19.Opening conversations surrounding the harms caused by work, this book analyses how people have lived with occupational illness and disability, critiquing risk and work-health cultures, and the structural violence characteristic of industrial capitalism and neoliberal economics, in addition to discussing the agency of big business and advocacy of workers and victims. Focusing on class, gender, disability and race, this book uses an impressive range of secondary and primary sources, including government reports and enquiries drawing upon workers’ testimonies, Mine and Factory Inspectors Reports, HSE papers, newspapers, Mass Observation responses and oral history interviews.

In an age of unlimited data and research, why do more than 50 percent of new products fail to meet expectations? It boils down to a lack of customer insight. The revolutionary theory behind Jobs to Be Done argues that people purchase products and services to solve a specific problem or fulfill a distinct need. For example, people down shovel down Rocky Road and Buttered Pecan ice cream because they want nuts, marshmallows, and gobs of frozen goodness, but because they feel the need to celebrate, indulge, or bond with friends and family. But how can this simple concept be best utilized for your company's success? This groundbreaking book, with its Jobs Roadmap, is intended to remake how companies approach their market. Successful innovation doesn't begin with a brainstorming session--it starts with the customer. Learn how to put that into practice by discovering how to: - Gather valuable customer insights- Turn those insights into new product ideas- Test and iterate until you find successDon't miss out on what Foreword Reviews described as "highly organized and expertly crafted. . . . Company leaders looking for ways to institutionalize innovation are sure to find it here." To maximize your company's success, begin with the customer
