John Keats

John Keats

John Whale

This book offers an exciting reassessment of Keats with particular emphasis on gender identity and sexuality. Traditionally, Keats has been more readily associated with the 'feminine' than any other canonical male English poet. This feminization was always likely, given his tragically early death and the mythologizing which took place soon after. In contrast, John Whale explores Keats's writings from the perspective of masculinity and gender by placing them in the context of contemporary friendship groupings and coterie relationships. Whale addresses all the major poems and gives due prominence to the letters. In so doing, he offers a new understanding of Keats's exploration of poetry, gender and desire, and provides an extended analysis of Keats's quest for poetic fame in the face of the often conflicting forces of love and sexuality.Clear, concise and insightful, this is an essential guide to one of the best-known Romantic poets.

John for Today

John for Today

Neil Richardson

SCM Press
2010

John For Today, like the author's earlier best-selling book Paul for Today, combines fresh accessible scholarship with an exploration of the gospel's significance for the contemporary Church and wider world. The Gospel's historical origins, distinctive features and literary patterns are all helpfully illuminated, including John's similarities with and differences from the other Gospels and the much-debated question of the Gospel's real author. Recent criticisms of the Gospel, such as its exclusiveness, alleged anti-semitism and predominantly male characters and language are also examined, together with its relevance for a turbulent world in which religion has become a deeply ambivalent phenomenon. The book seeks to be faithful to the gospel of John in the central position it accords to Jesus, whilst also relating this controversial gospel to the Christian orthodoxy of later centuries. It is a book written for the non-specialist reader, and 'for such a time as this'.

David S. Schaff's biography of the Czech priest Jan Hus - whose name is commonly anglicized as John Huss - is eye-opening and detailed, shedding light upon the philosophy and conflicts which led to Huss's execution. Born into an era of immense religious fervor, Huss quickly distinguished himself with a commitment to Christian studies. His youth was spent singing in churches, where he made a subsistence income from donations. His intellectual abilities proven, he was an early attendant of the University of Prague where he acquired degrees. He quickly translated writings of John Wyclif, who himself (illegally in church law) translated the Bible to Middle English. Perceiving immorality on the part of certain clerics, priests and bishops, Huss publicly condemned and ridiculed these moral failings. Events took a tumultuous turn when the Papal schism resulted in two claims for the Papacy, which threw the Catholic church into chaos. Huss's criticisms grew, and so did the number of enemies he had in the church.

John Chapters 1-4 Bible Study How Great Thou Art
A few weeks ago I was sitting outside a nursing home with a friend of mine. It was a beautiful day, and she was loving getting out into the fresh air after many days not even seeing the outside. I read the first five verses of John's Gospel to her: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.? John 1:1-5 She started singing, ?Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made I joined in, and together, traffic noise and all, we sat out in front of her nursing home and sang all the verses we knew of ?How Great Thou Art?. This 9-lesson Bible Study of the first four chapters of John is all about the One we were singing to.
John Chapters 5-11 Bible Study Is Jesus Really God?
This 8-lesson Bible Study focuses on the question: Is Jesus really God? After four thousand years, Jesus came to earth as a baby, grew to manhood, and then began His three-year ministry on earth. During those three years, on every street corner and grass-covered hill He told people He was: The Healer (John 5:8) The Son of God. (John 5:17&18) The Life-Giver (John 5:21) The Judge (John 5:26&27) The Bread of life. (John 6:35) The Living Water. (John 7:37&38) The Forgiver and Freedom-Giver. (John 8:11) The I AM. (John 8:58) The Light of the World. (John 9:5) The Good Shepherd. (John 10:11) The Resurrection and the Life. (John 11:25) Could there have been any doubt in anyone's mind that Jesus was saying, ?I AM GOD!?
John Chapters 12-21 Bible Study What Difference Would It Have Made If Jesus Had Not Risen from the Dead?
Have you ever asked yourself what difference it would have made if Jesus had not risen from the dead? I hope this 10-lesson Bible Study will answer that question for you...or that you will be better prepared to answer that question for someone else. Over twenty years ago my husband, Ken, had a business acquaintance ask him: What difference would it have made if Jesus had not risen from the dead Ken was only too glad to sit down with Jack that day, answer his question, and also tell him what it meant to put his faith in Jesus. When Jack realized all that Jesus had done for him, that Jesus was without a doubt God Himself, that He had been murdered, but then raised from the dead, and was alive today, Jack gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ.? Two years later Jack died...but didn't.? His body is in the grave, but Jack went to be with His Lord. He's living with Jesus today, and will for eternity.

John G. Paton, Missionary to the New Hebrides: An Autobiography (History of Vanuatu)
John G. Paton narrates his eventful life as a missionary to the New Hebrides - modern-day Vanuatu - in a frank and vivid manner.Beginning with his upbringing and education in Scotland, we realize early on that Paton carried unusual dedication and energy in his studies. Determining that he would become a man of God, spreading the word of the Christian gospel as a missionary, it was as a young and newly-married man that the author departed his native land for the far-flung islands of the New Hebrides.Initially his arrival is well-received, and he immediately begins to acquire words in the tribal language. Linguistically gifted, Paton would eventually translate much of the local language and convert the isles to Christianity. The road to such a great victory was beset with tragic misfortune: Paton's young wife fell ill early in his mission, and died of fever - her newborn son also succumbed only weeks later.

The Story of John G. Paton: Or Thirty Years as a Missionary Among South Sea Island Cannibal Tribes, An Autobiography
John G. Paton's thrilling autobiography relates a life spent as a missionary among the cannibal peoples of the South Sea Islands, and the education and development he helped bring to those remote isles.Born in Scotland to a religious family of rural Dumfriesshire, Paton was seemingly destined to live a life amid his traditional culture. However, as a studious young man Paton felt a calling from God and visited the city of Glasgow. He became versed in both theology and medicine and, in 1858 mere weeks after being ordained as a Presbyterian priest, Paton and his first wife Mary Ann Robson set sail for the South Sea Islands. Christened the New Hebribes, the isles which the missionary Paton settled upon are today part of the nation of Vanuatu. On arrival in early 1859, the primitive conditions of the natives - the fact they were generally naked, lived in simple huts, and would occasionally practice cannibalism - was a shock to Paton and his young wife.

John Williams: Changing the Culture of the Classical Guitar
This book assesses the influence and reception of many different forms of guitar playing upon the classical guitar and more specifically through the prism of John Williams. Beginning with an examination of Andrés Segovia and his influence upon Williams’ life’s work, a further three incisive chapters cover key areas such as performance, perception, education and construction, considering social and cultural contexts of the guitar over the past century. A final chapter on new directions in classical guitar examines the change in reception of the instrument from the mid-1970s to the present day, and Williams’ impact upon what might be termed ‘standard classical guitar repertoire’.With in-depth discussion of the cultural and perceptual impact of Williams’ more daring crossover projects and numerous musical examples, this is an informative reference for all classical guitar practitioners, as well as scholars and researchers of guitar studies, reception studies, cultural musicology and performance studies. An online lecture by the author and a transcript of the author’s interview with John Williams are also available as e-resources.
