Joshua Chamberlains superior command leadership, imaginative planning, and aggressive conduct during the Civil War provide a powerful example of exceptional combat leadership. After studying the descriptions laid down by Clausewitz and then studying the decisions and actions of Joshua Chamberlain in the events in which he was involved during the Civil War, Joshua Chamberlain as a general would qualify for the title of "genius." Joshua Chamberlain's genius residing in his outlook on management and leadership also tended toward the pragmatic. Far from being influenced primarily by irrelevant and high-flown notions based upon "book learning", he learned through study and application, as well as by working with mentoring associates, to put theory into practice the discarded those approaches which proves non-useful and carefully preserved those precepts and practices which had been successfully applied in both military and civilian settings

Joshua Bean, the son of an itinerant gunsmith, is in his 14th year when the story opens. He and his father have been traveling together for two years (since Mrs. Bean passed away) and Joshua has learned everything his father could teach him about the gunsmithing trade. Then, just outside the small town of Broken Spring, South Dakota, his father is stricken with a heart attack and dies. Joshua is taken in hand by the Kaufmans, a kind local family who run a general store and bakery. Josh does his best to be helpful to them. Mr. and Mrs Kaufman are killed by robbers in Joshua's presence. Joshua, who escapes, then learns that there was more to their murders than at first appeared. A larger plot is in process. Joshua is now in danger and his adventures begin in earnest. In the course of the story he receives a number of nicknames. But it is through his friendship with Tonkweyah, a Sioux warrior who befriends him, that he comes to realize his need to find his true identity-his own name that is the key to his inner being.

Our Bible Fun Factory Lesson Plans are "the essentials". The lessons that every single Christian child between 4-12 needs to be taught. In this series of five lessons, Israel is about to become a nation after struggling in the desert for 40 years. Joshua is now a grown man and a strong warrior. Children can admire his strength as Joshua receives the Promise Land from God and hope to grow up strong like him. Rahab becomes Joshua's friend and provides an important lesson on how sometimes it's a good idea to rat out the bad guys. The Walls of Jericho tumble down, showing how God expects us to be courageous and persistent. After that great victory, Joshua forgets to include God in one important decision, which backfires. God wants to be part of all our decisions, and the story shows this. Lessons Include: Lesson 1: Joshua Receives God's Promise Lesson 2: Rahab Rats on the Bad Guys Lesson 3: Joshua Collapses Walls of Jericho Lesson 4: Joshua Forgets to Ask God Lesson 5: What's All This Boring Stuff? We have 3 core beliefs when we create Bible Lesson Plans: 1) They should be EASY for the teacher to teach. 2) They should be FUN for the child. 3) They should actually TEACH the child bedrock principles of the Christian Faith and the Bible. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Each of the Lessons Include: -Materials List (Don't worry, nearly everything can be gathered up at a moments notice from your own house. For example, you might need to grab a big spoon) -Complete Lesson (Including our much loved "teaching script" that tells you exactly what to say ) -Scripture Reading (we put the scripture reading in the lesson, to make it easy ) -2 Games (Kids LOVE games, each game teaches an important element of the overall lesson and lets the kids get up out of their seat and move around. Typically one game is geared to young children 4-7 and another for the 8-12 year olds) -2 Intro Activities (These activities get the kids engaged in the lesson and help to fill the time as kids trickle in.) -2 Lesson Activities (These activities vary from object lessons, crafts, treasure hunts, and more) -Closing Prayer (Our closing prayers are each designed to leave the kids with a positive message and reminder of the lesson). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Class Length: The lessons are designed to run for one hour, but can easily be expanded to cover more time if needed. Age Level: The lessons include age-appropriate activities, discussion, and questions for children ages 4-12. Equally effective with mixed age groups or single age classes. Prep Time: Each lesson was designed to be taught after only 5-10 minutes of prep time. You don't need to go around collecting craft materials or spending an hour before class getting organized. You can literally "glance & go". Denomination: Our lessons can be used by churches of all denominations, as the topics covered are truly the foundation of Christian faith. In addition, any Bible translation can be used.
The Message of Joshua

The Message of Joshua

David G. Firth

The book of Joshua tells the action-packed story of Israel's entry into and conquest of Canaan, the promised land. Yet it is often troubling for contemporary Christian readers, perhaps more than any other part of the Old Testament: isn't there too much violence, and isn't this violence inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus? In The Message of Joshua, David G. Firth explores this story as part of God's mission, which goes on to find its ultimate focus in Jesus Christ. He illuminates the meaning that the book of Joshua still has for Christians today. It challenges us, just as it challenges those who have read it down through the ages, to recognize that God not only includes those who join him in his mission, but he also excludes those who choose to set themselves against it.Part of the well-loved The Bible Speaks Today series of commentaries, The Message of Joshua offers a clear, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by Bible students and teachers around the world, The Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for anyone studying or preaching Scripture and those who want to delve deeper into the text. This beautifully redesigned edition has also been sensitively updated to include modern references and the current NRSV Bible text.
