The Remarkable Life of Albert Haskell, Jr.: The King of Crown City is the first comprehensive portrait of the Cortland, New York schoolboy who forged a path of his own that garnered him a reputation in New York State and the Northeast of the nation as an accomplished lawyer, politician, banker, civic organizer, supporter of higher education, and promoter of industrial expansion.As a district attorney, Haskell crossed paths with the prohibition government agents, murderers, white slavers, members of the “Black Hand” gang, and the Ku Klux Klan. He successfully prosecuted those who were part of a tubercular cattle scandal. As a state assemblyman, he was an advocate for the state’s dairy farmers during the violent milk strikes in the 1930s. Haskell co-founded a chapter of Rotary International in 1919 and played a pivotal role in the 1950s in making the place of his birth “the typewriter capital of the world.” Based on a trove of scrapbooks assembled by Haskell through his lifetime and kept by his grandchildren, this biography reveals exactly why Haskell’s life of integrity and public service merits the title of “King of ‘Crown City.’”

This collection celebrates the pathbreaking work in game theory and mathematics of John F. Nash Jr., winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics. Nash’s analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games has had a major impact on modern economic theory. This book, also published as volume 81 of the Duke Mathematical Journal, includes an important, but previously unpublished paper by Nash; the proceedings of the Nobel seminar held in Stockholm on December 8, 1994 in his honor; and papers by distinguished mathematicians and economists written in response to and in honor of Nash’s pioneering contributions to those fields. In 1950, when he was 22 years old, Nash presented his key idea-the Nash equilibrium-in the Ph.D. thesis he submitted to the Mathematics Department at Princeton University. In that paper, he defined a new concept of equilibrium and used methods from topology to prove the existence of an equilibrium point for n-person, finite, non-cooperative games, that is, for games in which the number of possible strategies are limited, no communication is allowed between the players, and n represents the number of players. The Nash equilibrium point is reached when none of the players can improve their position by changing strategies. By taking into account situations involving more than two players, specifically the general n-player game, Nash built significantly on the previous work of John Von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern.Contributors. The purpose of the curriculum is to teach (whether teaching live or using digital format) that the human person exists as a multidimensional being and that one's sexuality is integrated in all the dimensions. As human beings, we have the capacity to reason, make choices, seek what is true, and to ask questions of ultimate significance. The lessons in the curriculum stress that one's sexual health depends on the choice to save sex for marriage or one monogamous bond and by making healthy choices in relationships, love, and responsibility. These choices affect the whole person's present and future well-being and the heritage passed on to future generations.According to the Arkansas State Health profile (at time of print) (insert applicable state/country's STD stats) http: //www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/stateprofiles/pdf/arkansas_profile.pdf, Arkansas ranks eighth for Chlamydia and sixth for Gonorrheal infections in the United States.1 Since sex involves one's sexuality, is more than an isolated act, is more than a bodily function, is not just a commodity to buy or sell, and since contraceptives do not always provide protection against STDs, sexual health education must appeal to the dispositions of the mind, heart, will, and conscience of the learner. Young people can be reached through their hearts and challenged to become persons of character, capable of contributing not only to their own well-being but also to their communities and society. The Whole Person Learning Theory by Onalee McGraw, Ph.D., founder of the Educational Guidance Institute, Inc. and author of Teaching the Whole Person about Love, Sex, and Marriage Educating for Character in the Common World of our Homes, Schools, and Communities, explains the philosophical and psychological concepts of the whole person approach to learning: the philosophy that one's sexuality is an integral part of the whole person. "As whole persons, men and women possess a sexuality that is integrated in body, mind, heart, will, and conscience. The sexual domain is permeated by the intellectual, moral, emotional, physical, and social domains. The psychological guiding principle is that cognitive powers of memory, thought, judgment, imagination, and learning related to sexuality permeate the body, mind, heart, will, and conscience; thinking, feeling, and acting in the sexual domain reflect the whole person."2 The premise of the whole person learning theory is foundational for Concepts of Sexual Health Sex & You The resources included in Concepts of Sexual Health Sex & You (modified for Jr. High) are based on medical facts, statistics from the Center for Disease Control & Prevention/cdc.gov, and are developmentally appropriate for 6-8 grades. The curriculum also meets Arkansas' 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Health & Wellness content standards. See student expectations listed for the various lessons.3 Permission is given by the authors to insert applicable substitutes for video clip(s), handouts, or slides based on current stats/population/culture maintaining the meaning and values of the original content. In five 45 minute lessons using video, PowerPoint, lecture and discussion, Concepts of Sexual Health Sex & You presents Jr. High students with the concepts of the whole person approach and a definition for sexual health that integrates the five dimensions of the whole person; human dignity and development; promotes virtue and character in love and marriage; medically based facts about STDs, contraception, and prevention of disease; and practical help to guide young people in the present and future when seeking answers to life's most difficult questions. Acquiring this knowledge and life skills will give students the opportunity to pass on sexual health and a heritage for life to future generations.

From the post-Reconstruction period to the modern civil rights era, nearly a century of state-sanctioned economic subjugation created what many regard as a permanent black underclass in America. What would have happened had freed slaves truly been enfranchised into the political and economic system after the Civil War? Staking a Claim, the life of Jake Simmons, Jr. - the international tycoon who was the most successful African-American in the history of the oil industry - affords us a rare perspective on this question. Simmons's great-grandfather, Cow Tom, a slave interpreter to a Creek Indian, rose to become the first black chief of a Native American tribe. This was in Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), where blacks were able to secure rights denied them in the white-controlled states. Cow Tom passed on a unique legacy of independence and entrepreneurial spirit that gelled in Jake. His resolve strengthened by his studies with Booker T. Washington, Jake took a series of calculated risks that allowed him to accomplish what would have seemed impossible to many - and become enormously rich at it. He began by brokering oil leases for black landowners who had formerly been cheated by white drillers in Oklahoma and Texas. Expanding his operations into postcolonial Africa, he negotiated amiably where America's multinational oil giants feared to tread, winning enormous concessions while earning the goodwill of African leaders.As a political power broker, Jake Simmons was no less impressive. He remained throughout his life what he called "a crusader for human dignity." In 1938 he brought one of the first school desegregation cases to the Supreme Court. It was said that while he served as the head of Oklahoma's NAACP his opinion held sway over ten thousand voters. White politicians across the South vied for his support. He asked his sons, "How the hell can a black man stay in bed in the morning when white men rule the world?" - and he lived by those words.
