Paul, Poverty and Survival

Paul, Poverty and Survival

Justin Meggitt

T. T.Clark Ltd
1998
sidottu
This social history of earliest Christianity radically re-evaluates both the methods and models of other studies. Justin Meggitt draws on the most recent research in classical studies on the economy and society of the Roman Empire. He examines the economic experiences of the Pauline churches, and locates Paul and the members of his communities within the context of the first century Roman economy. He explores their experiences of employment, nutrition and housing. He uncovers and describes the unique responses that they made to such a harsh environment. And he questions whether, from the outset, Christianity included a number of affluent individuals.A thoroughly researched and ground-breaking study.
Why Bíos? On the Relationship Between Gospel Genre and Implied Audience
Justin Marc Smith argues that the gospels were intended to be addressed to a wide and varied audience. He does this by considering them to be works of ancient biography, comparative to the Greco-Roman biography. The earliest Christian interpreters of the Gospels did not understand their works to be sectarian documents. Rather, the wider context of Jesus literature in the second and third centuries points toward the broader Christian practice of writing and disseminating literary presentations of Jesus and Jesus traditions as widely as possible. Smith addresses the difficulty in reconstructing the various gospel communities that might lie behind the gospel texts and suggests that the ‘all nations’ motif present in all four of the canonical gospels suggests an ideal secondary audience beyond those who could be identified as Christian.

Justin Stratis

Justin Stratis explores the meaning of the biblical phrase ‘God is love’ through an examination of two quintessentially modern Protestant theologians: Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Barth. This book contains both a detailed engagement with Schleiermacher’s untranslated lectures on Dialektik and their relation to his more well-known work, as well as a new assessment of Barth’s doctrine of God which both respects his radical innovations and yet places him within the stream of traditional, catholic trinitarianism. After considering the complexities of theological predication, and comparing several classical and contemporary approaches to the implication of ‘love’, Stratis presents and ultimately commends the distinct approaches of Schleiermacher and Barth for their tendency to treat divine love as a ‘conclusion’ to the doctrine of God, rather than as a conceptual starting point. In contrast to many contemporary approaches, Stratis concludes with the suggestion that God’s love is best conceived as his being toward fellowship, rather than as the eminent instance of loving fellowship understood according to human experiences of love.

Never before has it been this easy, to seeinto the workings of a childhood lost. The story through itsmany chapters serves both as inspiration and a warning to thegeneration raised by their grandparents. The author's storybegins with the earliest memories of an armed drugrobbery and progresses through stabbings and some of theworst violence and abuse a young child can endure.Suddenly finding himself in the saving hands ofgrandparents who have recently just lost their own child, Justinfinds himself trying to fill the void as the replacement to a son sotragically taken away years earlier. These expectations andcircumstances mold and change him through the years as heproves that if grandparents were any good at raising kids, they would not be raising their grand kids.

Most Diversity and Inclusion efforts focus too much on others, and lack in developing self-awareness. They leave some feeling excluded and fail to create real measurable impact for marginalized populations. Through the creation of the Creating Belonging Model, I believe that the greatest impact can be made when we begin with deep self-awareness and self-acceptance, pivoting quickly to a radical acceptance of others. When we balance our own authenticity with acceptance, we create belonging for everyone in the community.
