Kenyan Foreign and Security Policies

Kipyego Cheluget and Stephen Wright evaluate the legacy of Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Following a nationalist uprising and brutal colonial repression, Kenya became independent in December 1963. With much of the agricultural land still under European settler control, Jomo Kenyatta promoted foreign and security policies to balance Kenyan, African, and settler interests, attracting foreign investment into the new country. Kenyatta’s programs, however, favored the West and established a growing need for British and American security guarantees to sustain Kenya in an increasingly unstable Eastern African region. In this book, Cheluget and Wright show that despite the growing pressures within Kenyan civil society for diversification of policies and redistribution of economic wealth, Kenyatta consistently maintained pro-western policies until his death in 1978. This book is split into 3 parts. Part I discusses the growth of Kenyan nationalism, the end of the colonial era, and the birth of the Kenyan State. Part II considers the political economy and development strategies of the Kenyan State. Part III assesses the degree of continuity of the succeeding leadership portrayed from the Jomo Kenyatta presidency. Through this detailed analysis, the authors examine Kenyatta’s policies and examine how successive Kenyan presidents have largely maintained his policies and venerated his legacy.
Kenyan Diaspora Couples in America: Domestic Challenges of Kenyan Immigrant Couples in the United States

Many Kenyan immigrant couples in the US have lost their marriages and many others are struggling in their relationships. There are so many discouraging reports related to Kenyan Diaspora marriages in the United States. Indeed, there is an alarming element in the rate at which cases of domestic violence among Kenyan diaspora families are now increasing. Upon suddenly encountering unfamiliar marital customs, societal practices, and cultural tenets, the immigrant couples begin to face disillusionment as their deep-rooted convictions about the marital union become challenged and uprooted by the new cultural norms. In addition, the couples undergo tremendous shifts in their living standards, working conditions, and exposure to a more permissive society. This book will hopefully help Kenyan couples in the United States who are experiencing strains in their marriages or are separated or divorced to evaluate their own marriages in the hope of rebuilding them. I undertook a research to explore the kinds of marital problems faced by the couples, the factors causing those problems, and what recommendations may help the couples to overcome these kinds of marital problems. Based on my research findings and the recommendations made by my interviewees to their fellow Kenyan immigrant couples in the US, I have made recommendations that I believe will help the Kenyan diaspora couples in America to maintain stronger marriages.

Kenyan English: Domains of Use, Forms, and Users' Attitudes focuses on the unique issues that concern language researchers in Kenya and elsewhere. Edited by Martha M. Michieka and Evans Gesura Mecha, the collection examines the English language forms and usages to describe the reality of Kenyan English use. The contributors address questions such as: What are the characteristics that distinguish Kenyan English from other national varieties? How is English taught, and what impact does that kind of teaching have on learner proficiency? What is the place of English in mass media, in politics, in the churches, and in multilingual homes? The contributors, all experienced language practitioners based in Kenya or currently conducting language-related research in Kenya, bring fresh perspectives to the topic at hand and give readers a glance into contexts that have not yet been addressed in this way. They highlight the sociolinguistic reality of the English language in present-day Kenya and raise questions that will prompt further research.

This book examines Joseph Kamiru Gikubu’s impact on Kenyan youth education. The author asserts that over his decades-long career, Gikubu played an active role in not only building and improving Kenyan youth education but also in demonstrating the role educational institutions play in imparting nation-building skills. Gikubu’s educational contributions were wide-ranging and include both practical and theoretical aspects of education through his works in various juvenile rehabilitation programs and youth clubs, as well as his insights on youth education and school leadership. Through Gikubu’s educational work, this volume interrogates Kenya’s educational development, transformation, and entailed challenges. The book fills the gap in the dearth of African-centered educational biographies and their role in shaping Africa’s social, political, and economic spheres in both the colonial and post-colonial period. It also addresses emerging scholarship in African educational biographies.

Electric energy is a key contributor to socio-economic growth and development and provides the basis for industrialization, technological advancement and global communication. However, most economies especially in the developing countries prioritized implementation of the conventional power stations and traditional centralized grid network systems connecting only the major towns and with limited penetration to the remote and sub urban centres. Residents of such places are thereby left without any access to electricity or with the only alternative of relying on wood fuel and diesel which are uneconomical and have detrimental effects on the environment. Efforts to bridge this gap in electricity access existing in such places as the rural villages of Kenya have been greatly impeded by the nature of their terrain, the extremely high costs associated with extending the electric network infrastructure as well as the unavailability of proper policies governing the renewable energy sector. Conversely, most regions of the country are richly endowed with exploitable quantities of renewable energy sources especially solar and wind.

This study examined the factors that affect domestic tourism in Mombasa, Nairobi and Nakuruwith a view of addressing them in order to improve domestic tourism in Kenya. It investigated a sample of cross-section of the tourist stakeholders and through questionnaires schedules, obtained data from respondents consisting of those who had participated or intended to participate in domestic tourism. The work aimed at determining the effects of socio-economic factors on domestic tourism in Kenya, town of residence on domestic tourism, the economic contributions made by Kenyans participating in domestic tourism, individual's psycho-factors on domestic tourism, and to determine sustainable performance framework indicators for domestic tourism in Kenya. It is expected that the study will assist the government and other industry stakeholders in coming up with practical measures to address the obstacles facing domestic tourism with a view to increasing Kenyan participation in domestic tourism, and also contribute to theoretical knowledge.

Kenyan Khat

This book provides a richly detailed ethnography of Kenyan khat, tracing some of the many national and transnational trajectories this controversial stimulant takes from its centre of production in the Nyambene Hills to consumers in Kenya and throughout the world. The author, guided by his friend and khat connoisseur M'Mucheke, draws out the full economic, social and cultural significance of the substance, situating this significance within current debates on the legality of khat and the global rhetoric of the 'war on drugs'. The work explores how networks of Kenyan khat bring people of diverse backgrounds together in sometimes uneasy relationships, and highlights the vast cluster of meanings this remarkable commodity has accrued in its 'social life'.
