Ask Ron & Eddie: an incidental account of an insignificant life

Ask Ron & Eddie: an incidental account of an insignificant life

*No sheep were harmed or called Ron or Eddie in the writing of this book*Embedded within these pages are tales of Eddie's youthful antics and adventuring in the 1960s & 70s.They may sometimes come across rather obliquely and irreverently. However, Eddie's not really a bad person. There was the divorce, you see. And the car accident.Eddie works from home now.Answering letters from readers of his 'Ask Ron & Eddie' column in the "..arse end of journalism..", 'The Peoples National Monthly'.Whilst waiting for his operation and for the accident compensation money Eddie's convinced he's due to, money that will free him from his 'cul-de-sac council house existence', he has the time to respond to both readers' letters that will appear in his column along with his responses, and those that won't.In this way, via his lengthy and frequently 'off subject' direct replies to the latter, he opportunistically steals the agenda to reflect on his present miserable situation, using it as a vehicle for his cynical, bigoted, and often publically unprintable views on life: the French, smoking, capitalism, fashion, Margaret Thatcher, contemporary youth and anything else that presents the prospect of banging on to his captive audience. At the same time he reveals, within these replies, stories of his youth and teenage years; of better times resolutely lived through the 1960s and 70s as he sought a kind of happiness and adventure that eluded him in his sparse and often joyless early childhood.Ron? Well Ron doesn't figure very much it all really. until the end..

In today's educational community we struggle to creatively provide students sound structure in the classroom to foster a positive and safe learning environment. Jacobs and Langley try to dispel the notion that behavior is the only issue to consider when putting together a good, solid classroom management plan. Real Classroom Management: Whose Job Is It? demonstrates how a successful classroom management plan includes the entire environment—organization of materials, layout of the classroom and school facility, administrative support, and parental involvement—and show how professional learning communities help incorporate various factors to create a positive learning experience for all students.

This book looks at the intersection of student research and community-based learning in a concentrated location over a period of ten years. This study examines the use of an urban neighborhood as a place-based source for engagement partners and opportunities. With a sustained, programmatic commitment to the neighborhood, Northern Kentucky University sought to build trust over a period of ten years with residents, nonprofit agencies serving them, and other stakeholders, who in turn could generate a steady stream engagement opportunities valued by the neighborhood and valuable to students’ learning. Our analysis found that this sustained, programmatic commitment indeed built trust with partners and produced mutually beneficial opportunities. This has resulted in tremendous benefits to the university by creating lasting relationships, impactful work in the community and by retaining faculty and students.

R.F. Langley's 'Collected Poems' (Carcanet, 2000) was one of the poetic highlights of recent times, showing a sometimes sceptical public that a contemporary poet could still engage with the shades of Modernism and produce fascinating and original work. Throughout his life, the author has been maintaining a journal, which is part diary, part autobiography and part commonplace book; some extracts from these fascinating volumes have been appearing in 'P N Review' since 2002. This book offers a number of selections, ranging in time from 1970 to 2005, which will give admirers of his poetry a clearer idea of the author's other writings, which run in parallel with his poetry and sometimes provide the underpinnings for it.

How can the example of Morehouse School of Medicine help other health-oriented universities create ideal collaborations between faculty and community-based organizations?Among the 154 medical schools in the United States, Morehouse School of Medicine stands out for its formidable success in improving its surrounding communities. Over its history, Morehouse has become known as an institution committed to community engagement with an interest in closing the health equity gap between people of color and the white majority population. In The Morehouse Model, Ronald L. Braithwaite and his coauthors reveal the lessons learned over the decades since the school's founding—lessons that other medical schools and health systems will be eager to learn in the hope of replicating Morehouse's success. Describing the philosophical, cultural, and contextual grounding of the Morehouse Model, they give concrete examples of it in action before explaining how to foster the collaboration between community-based organizations and university faculty that is essential to making this model of care and research work. Arguing that establishing ongoing collaborative projects requires genuineness, transparency, and trust from everyone involved, the authors offer a theory of citizen participation as a critical element for facilitating behavioral change. Drawing on case studies, exploratory research, surveys, interventions, and secondary analysis, they extrapolate lessons to advance the field of community-based participatory research alongside community health.Written by well-respected leaders in the effort to reduce health inequities, The Morehouse Model is rooted in social action and social justice constructs. It will be a touchstone for anyone conducting community-based participatory research, as well as any institution that wants to have a positive effect on its local community.
