Lena Khalaf Tuffaha's debut, Water & Salt, sings in the voices of people ravaged by cycles of war and news coverage. These poems alternately rage, laugh, celebrate and grieve, singing in the voices of people ravaged by cycles of war and news coverage and inviting the reader to see the human lives lived beyond the headlines.

Lena wrote YOU'RE LYING! because no matter what your profession or life circumstances, you need the skills to take control of a situation, detect deception and reveal the truth. While you probably won't ever have to interrogate a detainee who doesn't want to tell you about an upcoming terrorist attack - as Lena has - YOU'RE LYING! will help you deal with that salesperson trying to rip you off, the kid bullying your child who claims innocence, a cheating spouse or dissembling boss. As the adage says, knowledge is power. Lena interrogated numerous members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban while stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and then taught those skills to Defence Department personnel for years afterwards. Her ability to build rapport, accurately read body language and employ effective questioning techniques led to numerous successes that saved American lives. You will, also, learn her easy-to-follow five-step programme on how to accurately detect verbal (both spoken and written) and non-verbal deceptive tells, how to conduct an effective line of questioning and what to do after you identify the lies we all face every day. Take the knowledge in YOU'RE LYING! and empower yourself. Don't get fooled again.
The preColumbian Textiles in the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim, Germany
Textiles were highly valued objects in ancient Peru - used for expressing status and diverse messages in these non-literate but highly organized and very developed cultures. The preColumbian peoples had access to exquisite materials: the local fibers were camelid fibers (alpaca and vicu a), cotton and plant fibers (agave, for instance). The ancient Peruvians were also master dyers and have for thousands of years dyed their yarn with indigo blue, madder red, cochineal red, sea snail purple and yellow from many kinds of plants. And so they produced some of the finest, most beautiful and most interesting textiles in the world. Instead of writing, they kept the order in their world encoded in textile fibers. The Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim houses a collection of 405 preColumbian textiles. Most of them are fragments, but a few complete pieces are present. I have chosen 133 pieces for this publication, to represent the collection at its best.

2025 ALA Notable BookWinner of the 2024 National Book Award for PoetryWinner of the 2022 Akron Poetry Prize It's nearly impossible to write poetry that holds the human desire for joy and the insistent agitations of protest at the same time, but Lena Khalaf Tuffaha's gorgeous and wide-ranging new collection Something About Living does just that. Her poems interweave Palestine's historic suffering, the challenges of living in this world full of violence and ill will, and the gentle delights we embrace to survive that violence. Khalaf Tuffaha's elegant poems sing the fractured songs of Diaspora while remaining clear-eyed to the cause of the fracturing: the multinational hubris of colonialism and greed. This collection is her witness to our collective unraveling, vowel by vowel, syllable by syllable. "Let the plural be a return of us" the speaker of "On the Thirtieth Friday We Consider Plurals" says and this plurality is our tenuous humanity and the deep need to hang on to kindness in our communities. In these poems, Khalaf Tuffaha reminds us that love isn't an idea; it is a radical act. Especially for those who, like this poet, travel through the world vigilantly, but steadfastly remain heart first. --Adrian Matejka, author of Somebody Else Sold the World

From one of Sweden's most astute cultural critics, a razor-sharp comedy of the progress and ruin of the industrial welfare state, told through the story of a single family. Ragnar Johansson is born in 1932, a transformative moment in Swedish history. He has Swedish social democracy flowing through his veins--convinced it lifted humankind out of the dark ages and into modernity, he cherishes it. At times Ragnar despises his mother, Svea, whose perpetual baking, scrubbing, and canning represent the poverty of the peasantry. Ragnar, for his part, hails the efficiency of washing machines and prefab food. Once he has children himself, he raises them in accordance with his values, standing in the ski track supporting his daughter Elsa as she works hard to become one of the best skiers in the country. While Svea is a relic of the past, Elsa represents hope for the future. In time, however, Ragnar realizes that the world is changing. Is his golden age coming to an end? In Son of Svea, Lena Andersson offers a characteristically funny, wise, and moving family chronicle about the social transformations that unite and divide us, and about finding the courage to be true to oneself.
