Exclusive Inclusion

Exclusive Inclusion

Dr. Marisa Claudia Jacometo During research on interpersonal relationships and their effects in various environments, such as organisational, social, family, and educational, as well as how these relationships can affect human learning and development. Thus, this thesis sought to prove that the Quota Programme implemented on 29 August 2012 by the Brazilian Government - which reserves, in federal higher education institutions linked to the Ministry of Education, in each selection process for admission to undergraduate courses, by course and shift, at least 50% (fifty percent) of its places for self-declared black, brown and indigenous students - produces an exclusionary inclusion. It is argued that the inclusion policy proposed by this policy model is a palliative measure. In this way, inclusive rhetoric is disguised as merely a "distraction" from the real conditions of exclusion in which the lower classes live. Therefore, it is argued that affirmative action, especially the Quota Programme in higher education, does not contribute to reducing social inequality.

Psychonarratology is an approach to the empirical study of literary response and the processing of narrative. It draws on the empirical methodology of cognitive psychology and discourse processing as well as the theoretical insights and conceptual analysis of literary studies, particularly narratology. The present work provides a conceptual and empirical basis for this interdisciplinary approach that is accessible to researchers from either disciplinary background. An integrative review is presented of the classic problems in narratology: the status of the narrator, events and plot, characters and characterization, speech and thought, and focalization. For each area, Bortolussi and Dixon critique the state of the art in narratology and literary studies, discuss relevant work in cognitive psychology, and provide a new analytical framework based on the insight that readers treat the narrator as a conversational participant. Empirical evidence is presented on each problem, much of it previously unpublished.
Nations before the Nation-State

Nations before the Nation-State

Throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages, thinkers understood nations as communities defined by common language, culture, and descent, and sharing strong bonds of belonging and solidarity. Even so, they did not assume that nations would also be appropriate units of government. The recovery of this historical understanding, in turn, yields valuable insights for contemporary political dilemmas. Nations Before the Nation-State offers the first extended study of the idea of the nation in ancient and medieval political thought. It recovers a pre-modern conception of the nation as a cultural and linguistic community, rather than a political association, and examines better means for thinking about nationhood. Offering a historic perspective from which to address challenges of nationalism, this book engages with debates on multiculturalism, liberal nationalism, and constitutional patriotism and argues that contemporary political dilemmas can be resolved more organically by recovering modes of thinking that have resolved similar tensions for centuries.

An enchanting, atmospheric new novel from New York Times-bestselling author Marisa Silver In an unnamed country at the beginning of the last century, a peasant couple longs for a child. In despair they turn to gypsy tonics and archaic prescriptions, and one cold wintery night, the couple’s wish comes true. But the silence that follows the birth forewarns of darker days to come. Strangers look on askance and fall speechless in the child’s presence, and villagers protectively hush their children as they pass on narrow market lanes. Pavla is no ordinary child, but then this is no ordinary tale. Woven throughout is the story of Danilo, a young man who sees beauty where others see ugliness, and who is obsessed only with protecting Pavla. Drawing from a rich tapestry of fables, fairy tales and folklore, Little Nothing is a fantastically inventive, suspenseful allegory, and one of the most quixotic and constantly surprising love stories you will read this year.
