Metaphysics and science have a long but troubled relationship. In the twentieth century the Logical Positivists argued metaphysics was irrelevant and that philosophy should be guided by science. However, metaphysics and science attempt to answer many of the same, fundamental questions: What are laws of nature? What is causation? What are natural kinds? In this book, Markus Schrenk examines and explains the central questions and problems in the metaphysics of science. He reviews the development of the field from the early modern period through to the latest research, systematically assessing key topics including: dispositionscounterfactual conditionalslaws of naturecausationpropertiesnatural kindsessencenecessity. With the addition of chapter summaries and annotated further reading, Metaphysics of Science is a much-needed, clear and informative survey of this exciting area of philosophical research. It is essential reading for students and scholars of philosophy of science and metaphysics.

An Economic Analysis of Innovation

An Economic Analysis of Innovation

Markus Balzat

The economic analysis of innovation is important because economic growth in highly industrialized countries and international competitiveness are driven by innovations and technological change. At the same time, marked nation-specific features exist in the structure of innovative activities and in innovative success. For the study of these national characteristics, the concept of national innovation systems constitutes a powerful and widely applied inter-disciplinary framework in modern innovation theory. This book illuminates this concept from different perspectives. Starting from fundamental conceptual and theoretical issues, it describes and discusses the main development lines of the approach of national innovation systems, and goes on to illustrate an empirical application of this branch of research, offering a new alternative for the quantitative comparative study of national innovation systems. This book will be of great interest to economists, scholars and policymakers dealing with innovation, technology, research and development, national innovation systems and international competitiveness.
The Society of the Cincinnati

The Society of the Cincinnati

Markus Hünemörder

Berghahn Books

In 1783, the officers of the Continental Army created the Society of the Cincinnati. This veterans’ organization was founded in order to preserve the memory of the revolutionary struggle and pursue the officers' common interest in outstanding pay and pensions. Henry Knox and Frederick Steuben were the society's chief organizers; George Washington himself served as president. Soon, however, a widely distributed pamphlet by Aedanus Burke of South Carolina accused the Society of conspiracy. According to Burke, the Society of the Cincinnati was nothing less than a hereditary nobility which would subvert American republicanism into aristocracy. Soon, more critics including John Adams and Elbridge Gerry joined the fray, claiming among other things that the Society was a secret government for the United States or a puppet of the French monarchy. While these accusations were unjustified, they played an important role in the difficult political debates of the 1780s, including the efforts to revise the Articles of Confederation. This books explores why a part of the revolutionary leadership accused another of subversion in the “critical period,” and how the political culture of the times predisposed many leading Americans to think of the Cincinnati as a conspiracy.

From a grandfather, whose passion for the ancient Greeks still colours their lives, to a mother and father fell in love over a mislaid piano, to a present day, where five sons dwell in a house with no rules, BRIDGE OF CLAY is an epic portrait of how a ramshackle family, held together by stories and by love, come to unbury one boy's tragic secret.
Corporate Governance in Modern Financial Capitalism

Corporate Governance in Modern Financial Capitalism

Markus Kallifatides; Sophie Nachemson-Ekwall; Sven-Erik Sjöstrand

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd

This insightful book focuses upon corporate governance processes, and explores the conditions required for effective corporate governance and control in 21st century globalized and financialized economies. In presenting a comprehensive study of a cross-border hostile corporate take-over process, describing the actors, institutions and events involved, this book examines and questions the current forms of corporate governance and control – both from a national and a global perspective. Using Old Mutual’s takeover of Skandia as a case study, the authors address corporate governance theory, and highlight its two fundamental dimensions: financial and operational flows. An important conclusion of the book is that the motives and theories of contemporary financial markets appear to have gained in importance at the expense of the corresponding operational considerations, something that has dramatically changed the rationales of different types of actors. The book critically questions these transformations, calling for the reconsideration and redesign of regulating institutions and corporate governance processes. This critical investigation of the competition for corporate control in the era of modern financial capitalism will prove a fascinating read for students, academics and researchers in the fields of corporate governance, finance and international business. It will also appeal to policymakers and practitioners within the realms of corporate finance, banking and the wider financial services industry.

Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents

Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents

Markus Niederberger; Nicola Pinna

Springer London Ltd
2009
sidottu
Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents discusses recent advances in the chemistry involved for the controlled synthesis and assembly of metal oxide nanoparticles, the characterizations required by such nanoobjects, and their size and shape depending properties. In the last few years, a valuable alternative to the well-known aqueous sol-gel processes was developed in the form of nonaqueous solution routes. Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents reviews and compares surfactant- and solvent-controlled routes, as well as providing an overview of techniques for the characterization of metal oxide nanoparticles, crystallization pathways, the physical properties of metal oxide nanoparticles, their applications in diverse fields of technology, and their assembly into larger nano- and mesostructures. Researchers and postgraduates in the fields of nanomaterials and sol-gel chemistry will appreciate this book’s informative approach to chemical formation mechanisms in relation to metal oxides.

Negotiating Environmental Quality

Negotiating Environmental Quality

Markus A. Lehmann

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd
2000
sidottu
Using strategic game theory, this innovative book carefully reviews the detailed negotiations between industry, regulating agencies and third parties in environmental policy implementation. The analysis is underpinned by an institutional comparison of German and US administrative and environmental law. After presenting an alternative model to address real-world bargaining, Markus Lehmann provides an economic rationale for the use of case-to-case regulation, a policy instrument traditionally neglected if not rejected by environmental economists. He discusses how and to what extent the shortcomings of this instrument can be overcome by a specific institutional design. He presents a clear-cut policy conclusion which is shown to be quite robust under different model structures and varying sets of assumptions. This pathbreaking study will be essential reading for economists studying environmental economics and political economy, political scientists working on policy implementation and design, as well as lawyers interested in administrative law and standing, and the economic theory of the law.
Molecular Imaging: Basic Principles And Applications In Biomedical Research
Molecular imaging is a rapidly emerging field that translates many concepts developed for molecular biology and cellular imaging to the in vivo imaging of intact organisms. The technique allows the study of molecular biological events in their full context and will therefore become an indispensable tool for biomedical research and drug discovery and development. This volume familiarizes the reader with the concepts of imaging and molecular imaging in particular. Basic principles of imaging technologies, reporter moieties for the various imaging modalities and the design of target reporter constructs are described in the first part. The second part illustrates how these tools can be used to visualize relevant molecular events: the biodistribution of drugs/ligands, the expression of drug targets (receptors, enzymes), and the consequences of the molecular drug-target interactions (pathway activations, system responses). A final chapter deals with visualization of cell migration (cell therapies).
