Deconstructing Management Maxims, Volume I

Deconstructing Management Maxims, Volume I

A contrarian challenge to the status quo, this book vigorously champions healthy skepticism in management theory and practice. Several common management maxims — often taken for granted as truisms — are examined and debunked with evidence-based arguments. The constant repetition of these flawed tropes perpetuates their mythological status and limits personal and organizational performance. Far from a business as usual business book, Deconstructing Management Maxims has been researched with academic rigor yet written in an approachable style. Unafraid of taking on conventional business wisdom, it contains some controversial yet substantiated positions that will provoke critical thinking and debate. After all, sacred cows and long-believed tenets of management lore do not go away quietly. A clear message from this book is that you don’t have to believe everything you read or hear—be it in the classroom or at work! It offers a refreshing break from the constant drumbeat of dronish corporate and academic clichés. This book is best appreciated by readers wanting to think critically about important management phenomena.

Joseph Smith Fletcher (7 February 1863 - 30 January 1935) was an English journalist and author. He wrote more than 230 books on a wide variety of subjects, both fiction and non-fiction, and was one of the most prolific English writers of detective fiction.Fletcher was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the son of a clergyman. His father died when he was eight months old, and after which his grandmother raised him on a farm in Darrington, near Pontefract. He was educated at Silcoates School in Wakefield, and after some study of law, he became a journalist. At age 20, Fletcher began working in journalism, as a sub-editor in London. He subsequently returned to his native Yorkshire, where he worked first on the Leeds Mercury using the pseudonym A Son of the Soil, and then as a special correspondent for the Yorkshire Post covering Edward VII's coronation in 1902.Fletcher's first books published were poetry. He then moved on to write numerous works of historical fiction and history, many dealing with Yorkshire, which led to his selection as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.Michael Sadleir stated that Fletcher's historical novel, When Charles I Was King (1892), was his best work. Fletcher wrote several novels of rural life in imitation of Richard Jefferies, beginning with The Wonderful Wapentake (1894).In 1914, Fletcher wrote his first detective novel and went on to write over a hundred more, many featuring the private investigator Ronald Camberwell.Fletcher is sometimes incorrectly described as a "Golden Age of Detective Fiction" author, but he is in fact an almost exact contemporary of Conan Doyle. Most of his detective fiction works considerably pre-date that era, and even those few published within it do not conform to the closed form and strict rules professed, if not unfailingly observed, by the Golden Age writers. In 1831 Charles Nodier began to publish a series of "Extraits des m moires de Maxime Odin" in the Revue de Paris. Although "Odin" is an anagram of the first four letters of Nodier, the relationship between the author and "Maxime Odin" is far more complicated than a simple transfiguration, and although all the stories in the present collection are entirely fictitious, the intensity of the author's imaginative involvement with them should not be underestimated. The Memoirs of Maxime Odin, presented here for the first time in English, in a magnificent translation by Brian Stableford, is one of the great works of French romanticism-exquisite, entertaining and touching, this is a masterpiece, the arrival of which has been long overdue in the English speaking world.

This scholarly monograph, Shakespeare s Dramatic Maxims, explores Shakespeare's use of maxims (defined as short, pithy statements of wisdom) in the plays, with special attention to their period social and political implications and how they affect reading and staging of his plays today. While some works (scholarly and popular) have explored proverbial aspects of Shakespeare's language (an entire subgenre of Bardolatry discusses how one can use his sayings to live a better life) but no major study has yet done an analysis of who speaks the maxims and to what effect they have particular political import that few have as yet considered within the universe of a complete collection of maxims from all the plays. And Shakespeare's moral import has evolved throughout the ages as the meaning and purpose of his work has taken new interpretations.Part 1 comprises an introduction that discusses the historical importance of maxims plus relevant scholarship on Shakespeare's language and politics; Part 2 includes a complete list of the dramatic maxims, proceeding through the plays chronologically; Part 3 pursues how the maxims help the reader and researcher develop readings of the plays, again moving through them chronologically; a robust index and bibliography (Works Cited) concludes the manuscript.

In Memaw's Maxims author James Turner keeps alive the century-old sayings and lifelong advice given to generations of students by his grandmother, a teacher from rural Tennessee. Homespun and traditional, but as relevant and crisp as ever, these antique words still serve as guiding beacons to a successful, happy, and productive life."Don't confuse the last word with the best word.""The cardinal is prettier than most birds, the mockingbird sings sweeter, and the owl sees better. None is superior to the other.""If you can't be a beacon in the night, perhaps you can be a shade in the summer.""It's OK to pat yourself on the back, but not to the point that you wear a hole in your shirt.""As demonstrated in Memaw's Maxims, words can make that lasting difference, be it good or bad. A hero's legacy is left by a person who speaks truth and encouragement into others' lives, who pours energy into meaningful conversation, who selflessly devotes their time to counseling others. They don't do anything to call attention to their life work and the sacrifices made along the way, but it's these individuals--the mentors, the Memaws--who deserve our greatest praise." --KATIE SHANDS, author of Finding Franklin

"Know yourself," the most famous of the Delphic Maxims, was carved into the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in the sixth century B.C. This precept and others on the famous list of 147 maxims speak to us across time with candor and insight about fundamental experiences-love, friendship, work-and about daily matters such as debt, reward, gossip, and goals. The Stoics-for whom the Delphic Maxims were as familiar as the ABCs are to us-based their philosophy on the idea that right living leads to happiness. The pithy, practical "commandments" that formed their thinking cut straight to heart of the matter, telling us how to be fulfilled, content, at ease with others and ourselves-in short, how to be happy. Both canny and comforting, the Delphic Maxims offer centuries-year-old wisdom for navigating the pitfalls of our nature and making the most of lives.

The world’s first self-powered machine gun, the Maxim gun became a potent symbol of Victorian colonialism in the closing years of the 19th century. It was the brainchild of Sir Hiram Maxim, the American-born firearms inventor who founded the company bearing his name with financing from Albert Vickers, who became the company’s chairman; Maxim’s company was absorbed by Vickers, Sons and Company in 1897. Subsequent variants in British, German and Russian service – the .303in Vickers (1912), 7.92mm MG 08 (1908) and 7.62mm PM M1910, respectively – dominated both the Eastern and Western Fronts during World War I and soldiered on into World War II, while the Vickers remained in front-line British service essentially unchanged until 1968. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and written by a noted authority, this is the engaging story of the Maxim and its descendants, the innovative rapid-fire weapons that saw combat with British, German, Russian and other forces in the late Victorian era and throughout the world wars.
