This book provides detailed and current information on using fullerenes (bucky-balls) in photodynamic therapy (PDT), one of the most actively studied applications of photonic science in healthcare. This will serve as a useful source for researchers working in photomedicine and nanomedicine, especially those who are investigating PDT for cancer treatment and infectious disease treatment. The book runs the gamut from an introduction to the history and chemistry of fullerenes and some basic photochemistry, to the application of fullerenes as photosensitizers for cancer and antimicrobial inactivation.

Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts, planned for 2020 but postponed because of the pandemic, explores the role of animals in his work – not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. In this powerful series of works, the interaction between man and beast is dangerous and cruel, but also disturbingly intimate. Both are contorted in their anguished struggle, and the erotic lurks not far away: ‘Bullfighting is like boxing,’ Bacon once said. ‘A marvellous aperitif to sex.’ Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication – a significant addition to the literature on Bacon – expert authors discuss Bacon’s approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included wildlife photography and the motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by considering animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon was able to lay bare the role of instinctual behaviour in the human condition. Sister Maureen O'Connor is a progressive American nun, who believes women should be equal with men in the Roman Catholic Church. At a conference in Jerusalem, Sister Maureen makes her case before a group of nuns-until a bomb explodes in the Pontifical Biblical Institute during her speech and kills Sister Maureen and twelve other nuns.Who would want to kill Sister Maureen? And why? This is the question pursued by Sister Marie Therese De Bruyne, the 29-year-old executive director of the Donne del Vaticano, or "women in the Vatican", a group established by Pope Francis to advance the role of women in the Catholic Church. She is helped on her quest to solve the murder by Father Dan Lanaham, a 75-year-old Jesuit who has just been elected superior general of his order, and Jacqueline Brussard, a former student of Dan's who is now a reporter for the Washington Post. When a terrorist group is blamed for the bombing, a terrorist mysteriously appears with answers. Khalil Khoury is a one-time friend of Dan, and brother of Dan's secret lover, Layla. But that was 40 years ago, and Khalil is here now to point out the bombers' path doesn't lead to the terrorist group but to the Vatican.Something Wicked is a fast-paced page turner of a thriller, written by a Vatican insider, Monsignor Jack Myslinski, and a Vatican media veteran, Michael McKinley. They take the reader on a thrilling and dangerous journey into some of the Catholic Church's darkest places, and also shine the brightest of lights on the good people within. The result creates a complex and compelling drama that will entertain a broad range of readers, as the crime is as unique as the characters who must solve it.

Significant advances in geomatics and geomorphology are changing the way in which scientists study complex mountain environments. This book provides a critical treatment and evaluation of these recent developments. With the advent of advanced satellite sensors, high resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation, models now make possible quantitative analysis and modelling of the landscape. So it is becoming ever more important for geoscientists to integrate geomatics into their scientific investigation. This book is a "must" for any researcher actively working in geomatics, geomorphology and mountain systems. It will also be valuable to geologists and resource planners interested in the role of surface processes in complex orogens and resource assessment and sustainable development. From the reviews: "...edited by two active and well-respected researchers in the field of geomorphology, surveys a broad range of quantitative approaches to the analysis ofmountain systems. This book provides a critical treatment and evaluation of recent developments. This well-written and wide-ranging material provides valuable insights into the use of specialized GIScience techniques across the broad spectrum of mountain geomorphic research. This book is a welcome addition for advanced students and researchers actively working on the study of geomorphology in mountain systems. The text also will be valuable to a range of scientists interested in the role of surface processes in mountainous regions, and to planners interested in resource assessment and sustainable development." The main purpose of this book is to give an overview of the developments during the last 20 years in the theory of uniformly distributed sequences. The authors focus on various aspects such as special sequences, metric theory, geometric concepts of discrepancy, irregularities of distribution, continuous uniform distribution and uniform distribution in discrete spaces. Specific applications are presented in detail: numerical integration, spherical designs, random number generation and mathematical finance. Furthermore over 1000 references are collected and discussed. While written in the style of a research monograph, the book is readable with basic knowledge in analysis, number theory and measure theory.

“Nanostructured Polymer Nanocomposite Materials — Concepts, Strategies and Opportunities” presents a comprehensive approach to the rapidly evolving, widely interdisciplinary field of nanostructured polymer-based heterogeneous materials. It introduces the reader to the various aspects of the area of nanostructured heterogeneous materials that are considered to be essential for researchers in the field: effective material properties, interfaces, synthesis and characterization. Building on this background, a review and discussion of recent developments in the field is presented.

Petit mal or absence epilepsy is characterized by a short-lasting interruption of awareness accompanied by a characteristic brain electrographic pattern. Discovering the pathology of this disorder is key to understanding both epileptogenesis and abnormalities of consciousness. Despite more than 50 years of research, the origin and mechanisms of this condition remain obscure; the action of drugs which alleviate petit mal is poorly understood; the state of awareness in patients between absence attacks remains uncertain. Consequently, petit mal continues to be a focus of research for neuroscientists and clinicians. This collection, contributed by authorities in the field, highlights the recent advances in a number of diverse research areas, some of them utilizing the exploding technology of our age. The book raises many questions which it is hoped will stimulate research into this fascinating and poorly-understood disorder.
Surgical Internship: An Experience of a Lifetime: (Based Upon True Stories)
All physicians enjoy their Internship year, believe it or not The knowledge gleaned from patients, the discourse with consultants: and the input of Staff Physicians help mold an Intern's diagnostic ability. Interns have a lot of book learning, but very little experience. An Intern is expected to function on very little sleep; deal with challenging health and social issues; and maintain an optimistic outlook on life. A successful Intern rationally deals with a patient's issues; always remains positive; does everything humanly possible to treat a patient's problem(s); and above all, the Intern must be realistic. Patients will die despite all the efforts of the Interns and the medical team. And unfortunately, that's life and an Intern must accept that fact. Interns are a rare breed. They enjoy their interactions with patients, and they attempt to have a positive outlook on life at all times. Interns like to laugh and they can find humor in almost every facet of the practice of medicine. Their funny antics and the situations they get themselves into is the basis for the writing of, Surgical Internship: An Experience of a Lifetime.
