Comprehensive Applications in Shaolin Chin Na

Comprehensive Applications in Shaolin Chin Na

Jwing-Ming Yang

YMAA Publication Center
1995
pokkari
Quite a few books have been published on the subject of Chin Na (Qin Na), the proven seizing techniques of Chinese martial arts. However, most books focus on the introduction of techniques themselves, and contain very little or no discussion on application in actual combat situations. This seizing art has thus been confined to stage performances instead of real combat use. Although Dr. Yang has published other Chin Na books, both fundamental and advanced texts, he believes this work is necessary in order to make this art more complete and alive. Therefore, in addition to introducing many new techniques, this book is also laid out according to actual combat scenarios - for example, application of Chin Na when your opponent punches, grabs, kicks or attacks with a knife. This book presents an encyclopedia of over 375 chin na techniques. Techniques are presented in actual fighting scenarios. The material is organized by 'type of striking' and is very helpful in determining what techniques to se against various attacks. Effective application of chin na requires speedy execution of a block or yield, a set up, and then a properly selected technique. The book includes:* Against bare hand attacks* Against blocks* Against kicks* Against knife attacks* Against grabbing

Life Beyond My Body: A Transgender Journey to Manhood in China
Literary Nonfiction. LGBTQIA Studies. Asian & Asian American Studies. Born in a rural Chinese village and identified as a girl at birth, Lei Ming, is barely cared for during his childhood. Often lonely, terrified and abused, he learns early to fend for himself and look within for answers, but there he discovers a paradox that threatens to undo him. Although he does not yet know the word transsexual, at 16, Ming sets out on a secret mission to find relief. LIFE BEYOND MY BODY tells the true story of his quest to find answers in a society that is closed-mouthed about men like Ming. Along the way, Ming finds solace and judgement in the Christian church, loves and loses a woman, begins his physical transition using black market testosterone, is jailed over his identity, and arranges for top surgery without blowing his cover. But ultimately, understanding the true meaning of being a man will require reckoning with God.

This book addresses the prediction and control of noise and vibration in ventilation systems and their psychoacoustic effects on people. The content is based on the authors’ research and lecture material on building acoustics and provides insights into the development of prediction methods and control of noise and vibration from ventilation systems, and an assessment of their psychological effects on people. The basic principles and methods for prediction and control of noise and vibration from ventilation systems are discussed, including the latest developments on flow-generated noise prediction, assessment methods for the performance of vibration isolation, noise control using periodic Helmholtz Resonators, and holistic psychoacoustic assessment of noise from ventilation systems. The insightful book on noise and vibration in ventilation systems Extends into prediction, control, and psychoacoustic assessment methodsThe book suits graduate students and engineers in acoustics and noise and vibration control, as well as in building services engineering and across the built environment.

Based on one of the greatest living theologians, Wolfhart Pannenberg, this book is the first comprehensive study of 'human destiny'. Mapping out the movement of humanity over the course of its history to its common destiny from creation through sin and ethics to eschatology, the book also examines the extent to which scholars such as Herder have influenced Pannenberg's work in this important area and shows how Pannenberg's project on ethics is related to human destiny.

Volunteer Tourism and the Moral Self, offers a new lens to conceptualise volunteer tourism through the ‘moral self’. It moves the conceptualisation of volunteer tourism to the broader discussion around ways of being and becoming a moral self. It is the first volume of ethnographic research of Asian experiences of volunteer tourism which has been a field of study premised on Western participants and weighted with Western assumptions and ethical models.Drawing on concepts and theories in geography, anthropology, sociology, tourism and education, Volunteer Tourism and the Moral Self explores how a moral self is cultivated, experienced and (hopefully) re-invented through volunteer tourism. It navigates with volunteer tourists from Hong Kong and Taiwan to examine how volunteer tourism has become a social trend. This social trend emerges from the interplay of institutionalised service obligation in schools and the culturally rooted ethical dispositions. It also manifests the search for rebuilding social ties in different forms of moral communities and new ways of being.

Analysis, Design and Construction of Foundations covers the key concepts in the analysis and design of foundation systems, balancing theory with engineering practice. The book examines in depth the methods used for the analysis, design and construction of shallow foundations, deep foundations, excavation and lateral support systems, slope stability and stabilization and ground monitoring for proper site management. Some new and innovative foundation construction methods are also introduced. It is illustrated with case studies of failures and defects from actual construction projects. This second edition is extensively revised and developed to include a new chapter on numerical methods in geotechnical engineering, as well as a large number of new construction drawings, project photos and construction method statements from existing projects to give the book a stronger professional application and connection to engineering practice. It also covers some new advanced theoretical concepts not covered in other texts, making it useful in both the theoretical and practical aspects. It is ideal for senior undergraduates and graduate students, academics and consulting geotechnical engineers.

This book discusses the future development trajectories, industry allocation, and investment opportunities of five regions in China: the Great Bay Area, the Yangtze River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Xiongan Triangle, the Central Triangle, and the Western Triangle. The authors analyze the resource endowment, current industries, strengths and weaknesses of the above regions, compare them with similar regions in developed countries, and discuss the future development direction, emerging industries and investment areas in these regions. Finally, they provide a comprehensive comparative analysis of the five city clusters and believe that they will become the five major growth poles leading China's economy in the future. The title will bring greater attention to the new wave of regional economic integration among the academic circle, markets and policy makers.
Matteo Ricci and the Missionary Role in the Evolution of Chinese Lexicon
This is a systematic study of Matteo Ricci’s (1552–610) enormous impact on the development of modern scientific and intellectual terminology in China.Taking the Sino-estern cultural exchanges initiated by Western Jesuit missionaries in the late-ing dynasty as its starting point, this book comprehensively presents the new terms coined by Ricci (and his collaborators) in his religious, geographical, geometrical, and astronomical Chinese writings. It uses a multitude of examples adopted from Ricci’s Chinese works as well as from ancient Chinese documents to discuss etymological evolution. Ricci’s early coinages of terms and their subsequent history demonstrate the role of interaction and scholarly collaboration between the late Ming Jesuits and Chinese intellectuals in the formation of modern Chinese lexicon. The research conclusions of this book will further advance Ming-ynasty studies and contribute to a new understanding of the creation of modern Chinese lexicon. This book is a vital resource for students, scholars, and linguists studying and researching in the history of Chinese and early Mandarin. This volume will also be very interesting among students and scholars of Chinese literature and history, particularly among scholars who work in Ming history and literature. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 International license
