When disaster strikes, survivors suddenly find themselves in a world that has become confusing and unfamiliar. Such traumatic events impose severe psychological strain on every member of a community, but children are a particularly vulnerable group requiring special attention. Children and Disasters addresses the needs of this specific population by examining the impact of major disasters on the mental health and emotional functioning of children. The programs described in this book are designed to provide early intervention to children and families undergoing stress reactions to a catastrophic event. The authors offer interventions aimed at enhancing the skills of mental health professionals, educators, and peer counselors in responding to the intensified demands of disasters. These intervention approaches provide information regarding the event itself, reinforce the legitimacy of the anxieties and fears that children and their families are experiencing, and encourage the expression of feelings in group and individual settings (for the younger child, through drawing and play). Furthermore, they build on the coping capacity of individuals and theirs families and provide concrete coping skills and techniques to alleviate stress reactions. The intervention model can be applied to programs for individual children and their families, multi-family groups, and groups for children in mental health, educational, and community settings. The practical hands-on approach to program design makes this book an attractive resource for mental health professionals, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, professional and volunteer counselors, and suicide intervention workers. It will also be useful for school personnel, including teachers, school counselors, and administrators, as well as federal and state emergency planners and coordinators.

Whether we are eavesdropping on the imaginative Saturdays of a Portuguese cleaning lady or living through a divorced woman’s search for the elusive orgasm. Norma Harrs manages in this collection of short stories to absorb the essence of her narrator’s psyche with the clarity of a good actress who gets under the very skin of her characters. Love, either the absence of or yearning for, is the theme that links that stories in this collection together. Love for a family member, a friend, a lover, or a husband, and sometimes that lack of reciprocity, is the element that gives the stories poignancy and force. The variety in these stories keeps the reader always guessing. The author doesn’t limit us to the easy answers, but brilliantly provokes us to enlarge our own landscape.

Dreams vanish in most of the masterful stories that make up Norma Harrs’s new collection. A young Irish girl falls in love with an older married professor and has her first date with heartache; a middle-aged woman attends her niece’s wedding and drunkenly surveys the wreck of her own life and love affairs; a young woman admires her kind and beautiful neighbour so much that she is almost drawn into a not so innocent profession … Adversity, sometimes disaster, befalls Norma Harrs’s characters, but instead of destroying these people, it often miraculously enriches their existence, bringing them a sudden awareness of what had been wrong with their lives and inspiring them to make a fresh start. Ms. Harrs seamlessly weaves together plot and evocative detail, wildly funny turns of events and inconsolable sadness; her stories’ earthy eroticism, their startlingly vivid dialogue and, above all, their breathtakingly original rendering of suffering and joy will remain with the reader long after the final page.

In Lifestyle for Longevity, Norman Ford shows us how we can enhance our health and well being, and indeed extend our lives, through quality of lifestyle and positive habits. Mr. Ford presents a program that includes 27 anti-aging techniques he calls Life Constants. These Life Constants are based in part on the habits and traits observed in centenarians all over the world. Unlike most books on the subject, Lifestyle for Longevity applies a holistic philosophy to life extension. In developing his Life program, Ford investigated the results of studies from every branch of biochemistry, gerontology and medicine. He also incorporates concepts from the fields of nutrition, psychology, sociology and stress management.

For the Display of His Splendor is a personal memoir of how a young woman survived an earthly difficult father to find relief and spiritual growth in knowing her Heavenly Father through her mother's faith, love and instruction. It's also the story of faith that took her from Canada with her husband and children to Mexico as support workers with Wycliffe Bible Translators. There she learned to live in another culture and later journeyed to remote places with her husband as he gathered material for some of the thirty-five books he authored. As her husband's editor and collaborator, Norma discovered she also had something to share in leading Bible studies, authoring five of her own books and has been a faithful and prolific writer of letters and cards of encouragement.
