Dying Well with Hospice: A Compassionate Guide to End of Life Care
Dying well, comfortably and peacefully, is one of the most important, most desired of personal choices. At the same time it is one of the most misunderstood topics. Few of us really want to talk about death, yet each of us will be facing it at some point in our lives. What's more, many of us are or will be a caregiver for another during this challenging time in one's life.Dying Well with Hospice shines light on this difficult subject by: Providing options for making end of life peaceful, dignified, and to lessen suffering Demystifying the dying processed - understand how the natural process of death unfolds and what actually happens Showing how Hospice provides extraordinary support and resources for palliative care Demonstrating how to use advance planning to carry out your wishes and avoid making difficult decisions during what can be an overwhelming time Offering suggestions for beginning this conversation with loved ones and family members Co-authored by a hospice professional and the spouse of a hospice patient, Dying Well with Hospice addresses the fears we have about death, discusses the many options available for making this a productive and loving time of transition. It also describes how to begin this dialogue for yourself and others. Additionally, Dying Well with Hospice dispels the myth that terminal patients who choose to end treatment have "given up". Instead, it shows how end of life can be embraced fully when the distractions of treatment are removed at the choice of the patient, allowing them to decide what they want to do with their remaining time. Simply put, Dying Well with Hospice shows you how to reduce suffering, provides comforting advice during this critical time in one's life cycle, and offers numerous options for personal growth, freedom, and peace of mind.

Can You Sue Your Parents for Malpractice?
It's absolutely disgusting being fourteen. You've got no rights whatsoever. Your parents get to make all the decisions: Who gets the single bedroom. How much allowance is enough. What time you must come in. Who is a proper friend. What your report card is supposed to look like. And what your parents don't tell you to do, the school does.None of this seems fair to Lauren Allen, but then she finds a way to fight back. She can even sue her parents for malpractice...can't she? "Entangled in a web of family friction, adolescent uncertainty, and romantic longing, Lauren slowly learns to make decisions that are right for her....Humor abounds, nicely balancing the reality." -- Children's Book Review Service"Ruefully and relentlessly funny." -- The New YorkerPaula Danziger lives in New York City and Bearsville, New York."This novel is as much fun as Danziger's The Cat Ate My Gymsuit." -- School Library Journal

Invisible Privilege

Invisible Privilege

Paula Rothenberg

Life began for Paula Rothenberg in a privileged home in New York City, but it took her to the battlefields of the culture wars on behalf of the underprivileged. Now this veteran of that cultural clash examines the subtle and complex ways in which issues of race, class, and gender impact people's lives. A prominent figure in the creation of women's studies and multicultural studies as academic disciplines, Rothenberg is perhaps best known for her textbook Race, Class and Gender in the United States, which was widely attacked by conservatives defending traditional curricula. Now she shows how higher education upholds race, class, and gender bias and, more generally, analyzes the ways in which many white people's unwavering belief in their own good intentions leaves them blind to their societal privilege and their role in perpetuating class difference. In this candid look at social and academic realities, Rothenberg shares incidents from her own life and the lives of family and friends to show how privilege is constructed and to reveal the forces that make us unaware of it. Through recollections of her childhood in an upper middle class Jewish family and her college years in the early sixties, she tells how she discovered that the world one takes for granted as everyday life is in fact riddled with privilege of which we are unaware. Reviewing the social upheaval of the seventies that challenged fundamental assumptions about gender roles, race relations, and even the nature of the family, Rothenberg tells how she gained a new understanding of what it meant to be an educator and activist. In sharing events surrounding the publication of Race, Class and Gender, she offers an inside look at the culture wars and brings her story into the '90s with a cogent discussion of hate speech and the political correctness controversy. Rothenberg recalls the early mobilization against sexual harassment and recounts what it was like to create one of the first feminist philosophy courses. She also offers a hard-hitting critique of current teaching practices and a response to critics of multiculturalism and feminism-as well as a look at how de facto segregation continues in American education in the form of tracking. Both deeply personal and broadly social, this finely crafted memoir will capture the interest of anyone who cares about the future of education, race relations, feminism, and social justice.
