A fully illustrated catalogue of new work and texts by Sir Grayson Perry to accompany a landmark exhibition at the Wallace Collection in celebration of the artist's 65th birthday. This publication accompanies a major exhibition created and curated by Grayson Perry at the Wallace Collection. The Collection’s famous portrait of Madame de Pompadour (1759) by François Boucher has long fascinated Perry, as have a great many other pieces including its superb group of portrait miniatures and an early eighteenth-century bronze of Mezzetin, soulfully strumming his guitar. Perry has created a fictional persona, Shirley Smith, who believes herself to be the rightful heir to Hertford House’s treasures – and indeed, the entire Wallace Collection. Through this identity, a series of new artworks have been made – inspired and influenced by those in the Collection – intended to decorate an imagined family home, complete with ancestral portraits, Old Masters and priceless antiques. Delusions of Grandeur presents this fantasy world and playfully explores themes including the meaning of home and how it creates a sense of safety, the gendering of decoration, perfection versus authenticity, and the exquisite and pretty versus the brutality and pomp of masculinity. And through the backstory of Shirley Smith, the transformative and healing nature of art is demonstrated. This book presents Perry’s new works in a variety of media: ceramic, sculpture, textile and works on paper, which themselves complement the diversity and range of objects found within the Collection itself. This landmark exhibition marking Perry’s 65th birthday is both a meditation and an introspection and offers an elaborate commentary on the very nature of making and collecting art.

Fred Perry, three-time Wimbledon champion in the 1930s, was one of Britain's greatest sportsmen of the 20th century. His success on the hallowed Wimbledon turf went unmatched by a British man for a remarkable 77 years, until Andy Murray's triumph in 2013. Perry was the first player to hold all four Grand Slam titles, and he also played a pivotal role in Great Britain's domination of the Davis Cup in the mid-1930s. Despite his status as a global sports celebrity, Perry was criticised for his ruthless desire to win and was frequently at odds with the amateur tennis authorities of the day. In this revealing biography, award-winning historian Kevin Jefferys examines afresh the life and career of Britain's most successful tennis star. The author shows how good fortune as well as tremendous talent aided Perry's meteoric rise to the top; traces his frosty relationship with the British tennis establishment, which continued after he turned professional in 1936; and considers Perry's place among the true legends of the sport.

Port Perry is a community located in Scugog, Ontario. The town is located northeast of Toronto and just north of Oshawa. The area around Port Perry was first surveyed as part of Reach Township by Major S. Wilmot in 1809. The first settler in the area was Reuben Crandell, a United Empire Loyalist who built a homestead with his wife in May 1821.Settler Peter Perry laid out village lots on the shore of Lake Scugog in 1848 on the site of a former native village known as Scugog Village. The town site was named Port Perry in 1852 and its first Postmaster was Joseph Bigelow. The first train on the Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway reached the terminus in Port Perry in 1872. Cargo from all over northern Ontario was shipped via the Trent-Severn Waterway to Port Perry via Lake Scugog, and then via the railway to Whitby, where it could be loaded onto the Canadian Pacific or Canadian National mainlines running along the shore of Lake Ontario, or onto ships in Port Whitby. The village was amalgamated with Cartwright, Reach and Scugog Townships to form the Township of Scugog in 1974 upon the creation of the Regional Municipality of Durham. On July 3, 1884 the entire business section of Port Perry was destroyed by fire. The wooden buildings exploded when sparks hit them. The Ross & Sons Grain Elevator on the waterfront, plus two other buildings were the only ones to survive. Thirty-three commercial buildings housing nearly fifty businesses, as well as factories, warehouses, stables, six lodges, and a dozen homes were reduced to rubble in under an hour.Four months later, the entire commercial sector with seventeen large brick buildings were built.
The Peri-Urban Interface
Peri-urban interfaces - the zones where urban and rural areas meet - suffer from the greatest problems to humans caused by rapid urbanization, including intense pressures on resources, slum formation, lack of adequate services such as water and sanitation, poor planning and degradation of farmland. These areas, home to hundreds of millions of people, face unique problems and need distinctive and innovative approaches and solutions. This book, authored by top researchers and practitioners, covers the full breadth and depth of the impacts of rapid urbanization on livelihoods, poverty and resources in the peri-urban zones in diverse African, Asian, Latin American and Caribbean contexts. Topics include peri-urban resource sustainability, ecosystems and societies and environmental changes in peri-urban zones. Rich case studies cover production systems and livelihoods including the impacts of irrigated vegetable production, horticulture, dairy enterprises, waste-fed fisheries and pastoral livelihoods. Also addressed are planning and development issues in the peri-urban interface including the difficulty in achieving sustainability, conflict and cooperation over resources, and a fresh look at the relationship between people and their environment. The final part of the book presents policies and strategies for promoting and measuring sustainability in peri-urban zones including community-based waste management, the co-management of watersheds and empowerment of the poor. This book is the most comprehensive examination of the challenges and solutions facing the people and environments of peri-urban zones and is essential reading for all practitioners, students and academics in geography and development.

An essential companion to one of the key contemporary art works of the last decade, Grayson Perry's series of tapestries, The Vanity of Small Differences. Telling a story of class and taste, aspiration and identity, tapestry series The Vanity of Small Differences saw Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry travel the length and breadth of the UK, ‘on safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain’. In his BAFTA award winning three-part documentary series All in the Best Possible Taste (Channel 4), Perry explores the ‘emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with, wear, eat, read or drive.’ The Vanity of Small Differences is the beautiful publication, covered with real cloth, accompanying the Hayward Touring exhibition with the same name. The book features Perry’s six vibrant and highly detailed tapestries bearing the influence both of early Renaissance painting and of William Hogarth’s moralising series, literally weaving characters, incidents and objects from the artist’s research into a modern day version of Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress (1733). With an inventive and elegant design from Pony Ltd, this fascinating publication includes an extensive array of full-colour reproductions of Perry’s tapestries, complete with photos of the artist’s sketches and preparatory material for the tapestries themselves. Journalist Suzanne Moore (Guardian, Mail on Sunday) contributes to the book with an incisive, moving and highly personal reflection on questions of class, taste and their relative values. Also featuring a new text by Grayson Perry, alongside extensive commentary on each of the tapestries, while curator Adam Lowe’s essay explores the process of their making and their place in the digital age, The Vanity of Small Differences is an essential guide to the work of one of Britain’s best-loved artists.

Herry Perry (1897-1962) is an important, but neglected, artist of the 1920s-50s. The book brings together all aspects of her art for the first time. She studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (now Central Saint Martins) from 1924-7 and was taught wood engraving there by Noel Rooke. Her first love was wood engraving but she quickly moved on to use the wide range of other skills she acquired at the Central. Her best known work is the posters she designed for Frank Pick at London Transport from 1927-38. She produced some sixty witty and inventive posters during this time. Some of these included birds-eye view maps of areas of London. She was also commissioned to paint murals, most famously two on R.M.S. Queen Mary in 1936, and also a map mural for Rothamsted Research Station in 1932 (which can still be seen there). She also illustrated various books, some of which were written by her. The text and illustrations often show her sense of humour. The Second World War and the death of Frank Pick in 1941 put an end to her poster work. After the War she painted a large number of pub signs for various London and Kent breweries.
