A Primer on School Budgeting

A Primer on School Budgeting

Robert N. Kratz; Charles A. Scott; Harry T. Zechman

Rowman Littlefield Education
1998
nidottu
Does the prospect of preparing your school district's budget seem daunting? Beginning school administrators, often having only one theoretical course on the subject under their belt, see the budget development process as a nightmare. New administrators, teachers, and board members who have little experience with budgeting are justifiably concerned by the prospect of their involvement in budgeting. This book leads the reader through all stages of the process, from the theoretical underpinnings (history, types of budgets, etc.) and practical considerations (revenue planning, budget calendar, etc.) through to the adoption of the budget and its implementation. Includes sample budgets, and tips for administration of a budget once it is in place.
A Primer on Working with Resistance

A Primer on Working with Resistance

Martha Stark

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers
1994
nidottu
"Martha Stark's primer on resistance is a unique book. It takes as the heart of the clinical problem the patient's reluctance to change, that ubiquitous and paradoxical phenomenon of our work in which people come to us asking for help in changing, and then do their level best to keep change from happening... This is a work which is at once a practical guide and a theoretical tour de force. Readers who journey in this slim volume with Dr. Stark will return from their travels to their practice much educated, having encountered new ideas and old ones in new forms, better able to face the everyday travails of psychotherapy." –David E. Scharff, M.D. "Every so often a book emerges from the vast sea of analytic writings that startles in its creativity and usefulness. A Primer on Working with Resistance is just such a book. Dr. Stark is as clear as a bell. She manages complex theoretical concepts with sophistication and great sensitivity for the material. For example, the distinctions she makes between convergent and divergent conflict, or between illusion and distortion, are elegant. The question and answer format of the book is reassuring for the beginner, and a delight for the more experienced reader as well." –Anne Alonso, Ph.D., Harvard Medical School A Jason Aronson Book

The Primer of Object Relations Therapy

The Primer of Object Relations Therapy

Jill Savege Scharff; David E. Scharff

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers
1995
nidottu
In the last two decades, object relations theory has crossed the Atlantic and taken America by storm. The enthusiasm among American clinicians for the British School, however, has led to a host of problems related to the need to master a new terminology. The difficulty in assimilating object relations theory is one more example of the aphorism that America and England are two countries separated by a common language. The Scharffs have taken a giant step forward in assisting American therapists in their efforts to master the language of object relations theory. With this primer they have anticipated the reader's questions at every turn and have answered them in remarkably clear and readable prose. Terms like projective identification, holding, containment, and self are freed from obscurity and made entirely understandable to even the novice clinician. The authors then apply these concepts to a variety of clinical settings. The Scharffs are equally at home when doing individual, family, marital, group, or sex therapy. It is difficult to imagine any other team of authors who could provide such a comprehensive survey of the broad applications of object relations theory. Students in all the mental health professions will find this slim volume to be an extraordinarily useful introduction to the field.
A Primer on Regression Artifacts

A Primer on Regression Artifacts

Donald T. Campbell; David A. Kenny

Guilford Publications
1999
sidottu
Regression toward the mean is a complex statistical principle that plays a crucial role in any research involving the measurement of change. This primer is designed to help researchers more fully understand this phenomenon and avoid common errors in interpretation. The book presents new methods of graphing regression toward the mean, facilitating comprehension with a wealth of figures and diagrams. Special attention is given to applications related to program or treatment evaluation. Numerous concrete examples illustrate the ways researchers all too often attribute effects to an intervention or other causal variable without considering regression artifacts as an alternative explanation for change. Also discussed are instances when problems are actually created, instead of solved, by correction for regression toward the mean. Throughout, the authors strive to use nontechnical language and to keep simulations and formulas as accessible as possible.

A Primer of Probability Logic

A Primer of Probability Logic

Ernest W. Adams

Centre for the Study of Language Information
1996
pokkari
This book is meant to be a primer, that is an introduction, to probability logic, a subject that appears to be in its infancy. Probability logic is a subject envisioned by Hans Reichenbach and largely created by Adams. It treats conditionals as bearers of conditional probabilities and discusses an appropriate sense of validity for arguments such conditionals, as well as ordinary statements as premises. This is a clear well written text on the subject of probability logic, suitable for advanced undergraduates or graduates, but also of interest to professional philosophers. There are well thought out exercises, and a number of advanced topics treated in appendices, while some are brought up in exercises and some are alluded to only in footnotes. By this means it is hoped that the reader will at least be made aware of most of the important ramifications of the subject and its tie-ins with current research, and will have some indications concerning recent and relevant literature.

When its springtime in horse country, few sights stir the hearts of horse lovers more than that of mares and foals on good green pasture. It is an image filled with both the satisfaction of the moment and the promise of the future. For horse people, the foaling process is one of the most critical and satisfying aspects of ownership. "The Foaling Primer" captures the foaling experience in amazing, up-close photographs taken by noted horse photographer Bob Langrish. Perfect for novice horse owners, first-time farmers, 4-H and Pony Club members, and anyone who is fascinated by horses and their lives, this introductory handbook provides everything one needs to know to be successful with a foal. The chapters are divided along critical points in a foal's developmental timeline: the first 24 hours, the early weeks, one to three months, four to six months, weaning time, and approaching the yearling mark. There are how-to boxes for such tasks as bottle-feeding, introducing a foal to grooming, and practicing rope leading; "to-do" lists for each stage of a foal's development; charts of what's normal and what's not (with clear guidance on when to call a vet); lists of supplies and equipment needed; definitions of key words and terms; and forms to use for accurate record keeping. The pages of this hard-working guide are sure to be dog-eared by the time a foal reaches the one-year mark, as readers will refer to it again and again for reassurance, guidance, and complete, dependable information.

A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications
In the first edition of his seminal introduction to wavelets, James S. Walker informed us that the potential applications for wavelets were virtually unlimited. Since that time thousands of published papers have proven him true, while also necessitating the creation of a new edition of his bestselling primer. Updated and fully revised to include the latest developments, this second edition of A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications guides readers through the main ideas of wavelet analysis in order to develop a thorough appreciation of wavelet applications.Ingeniously relying on elementary algebra and just a smidgen of calculus, Professor Walker demonstrates how the underlying ideas behind wavelet analysis can be applied to solve significant problems in audio and image processing, as well in biology and medicine. Nearly twice as long as the original, this new edition provides · 104 worked examples and 222 exercises, constituting a veritable book of review material · Two sections on biorthogonal wavelets · A mini-course on image compression, including a tutorial on arithmetic compression · Extensive material on image denoising, featuring a rarely covered technique for removing isolated, randomly positioned clutter · Concise yet complete coverage of the fundamentals of time-frequency analysis, showcasing its application to audio denoising, and musical theory and synthesis · An introduction to the multiresolution principle, a new mathematical concept in musical theory · Expanded suggestions for research projects · An enhanced list of references · FAWAV: software designed by the author, which allows readers to duplicate described applications and experiment with other ideas. To keep the book current, Professor Walker has created a supplementary website. This online repository includes ready-to-download software, and sound and image files, as well as access to many of the most important papers in the field.

PCR Primer Design

PCR Primer Design

Humana Press Inc.
2007
sidottu
In the past decade, molecular biology has been transformed from the art of cloning a single gene to a statistical science measuring and calculating properties of entire genomes. New high-throughput methods have been developed for genome sequencing and studying the cell at different systematic levels such as transcriptome, proteome, metabolome and other -omes. At the heart of most high-throughput methods is the technique of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR Primer Design focuses on primer design, which is critical to both the efficiency and the accuracy of the PCR. With intricate descriptions of basic approaches as well as specialized methods, this volume is an exceptional reference for all those involved in studying the genome. In PCR Primer Design, authors describe basic approaches for PCR primer design in addition to specialized methods. These state-of-the-art methods can be used for both genome-scale experiments and for small-scale individual PCR amplifications. This volume will be useful for organizations performing whole genome studies, companies designing instruments that utilize PCR, and individual scientists – geneticists, molecular biologists, molecular geneticists, and more – who routinely use PCR in their research.
