The book Locating Private Rabbani: Strength of Strengths is a fictional war story set in the Philippines. A drunkard and a mentally unstable man encounter a ghost, who warns of a coming war that will engulf Private Rabbani. Rabbani seeks out the military chaplain, hoping to be taken seriously about the ghostly encounters that Private Rabbani is having. Over the course of the story, it is discovered that Private Rabbani is the only stable, sound-minded individual. Despite his religious views being scoffed at by those less than morally astute individuals, Private Rabbani delivers a message of the impending war. Only that it may already be too late to retaliate against the oncoming Russian and Chinese enemy, who bombard the island. The library at Hereford Cathedral is famous as one of the few surviving `chained libraries'; but the contents of the books secured to the seventeenth century presses are less well known. There are 227 western manuscripts, of which about half have been at the cathedral since before the Reformation. They range in date from the eighth to the fifteenth century, and include finely-illustrated patristic books of the twelfth century, a large collection of Oxford University legal textbooks, and books of civil and canon law from the end of the thirteenth century. Over half the volumes survive in largely intact medieval bindings. The catalogue, begun by the late Sir Roger Mynors and completed by Professor Thomson, reflects the particular strengths of the collection. The many glossed books are described using a particularly effective system devised by Sir Roger Mynors. An introductory essay by Michael Gullick describes the medieval bindings, and the plates cover not only illumination and bindings, but medieval pressmarks and ownership inscriptions, as well as examples of scripts.

The new series, Advances in Bioclimatology provides authorative reviews on the latest developments in all research areas concerned with the effects of climatic factors on living organisms - be they plants, animals or humans. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has increased globally from about 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution (Pearman 1988) to about 353 ppm in 1990. That increase, and the continuing increase at a rate of about 1.5 ppm per annum, owing mainly to fossil fuel burning, is likely to cause change in climate, in primary productivity of terrestrial vegetation (managed and unmanaged), and in the degree of net sequestration of atmospheric CO into organic form. The quantitative role 2 of the latter in attenuating the increase in atmospheric CO concentration itself is 2 an important but uncertain element of the global carbon-cycle models that are required to predict future increases of atmospheric CO concentration. 2 In my experience in workshops and other multidisciplinary gatherings, argument arises in discussion of this topic among different groups of scientists such as bioclimatologists, plant physiologists, biogeochemists and ecologists. Plant concentration physiologists are often impressed by the positive effect of higher CO 2 on plant growth under experimental controlled environments and argue that this would be at least partly expressed in the field for many species and communities.
