In the newly created Republic of Czechoslovakia, the intention was to replace the previously dominant Hungarian influence with a common national identity. Sabine Witt investigates how intellectuals in the Slovakian portion of Czechoslovakia opposed this de facto Czech notion of nationhood through cultural activities in politics, journalism, and science to promote Slovakian nationalism.
