Janis Berzins untersucht die Kantaten Johann Sebastian Bachs, die er zum Anlass der Ratswahl komponiert hat, nachdem sie bisher weder in der Theologie noch in der Musikwissenschaft im Fokus der Forschung gestanden haben. Dabei zeigen sowohl ihre Textgestalt als auch die musikalische Umsetzung ein spezifisches theologisches Profil, das sich von anderen Kantaten Bachs signifikant unterscheidet, wie Berzins herausarbeitet. Sie binden irdisches Wohlergehen zuruck an Gottes Gnadenwirken, ordnen irdische Obrigkeit ein in dieses Geschehen und beschreiben das gesellschaftliche Zusammenleben als angewiesen auf Gottes Segen. Auch wenn sich das Verstandnis politischer Ordnungen seit ihrer Komposition entscheidend gewandelt hat, bieten Bachs Ratswahlkantaten auch heute das Potential zu einer uberzeugenden Gestaltung von Kantatengottesdiensten. Auch die Rahmenbedingungen eines solchen Einsatzes bedenkt Berzins in seinem Werk.
