Television with Stanley Cavell in Mind

Television with Stanley Cavell in Mind

UNIVERSITY OF EXETER PRESS
2023
sidottu
This collection of new work on the philosophical importance of television starts from a model for reading films proposed by Stanley Cavell, whereby film in its entirety—actors and production included—brings its own intelligence to its realization. In turn, this intelligence educates us as viewers, leading us to recognize and appreciate our individual cinephilic tastes, and to know ourselves and each other better. This reading is even more valid for TV series. Yet, in spite of the progress of film-philosophy, there has been a paucity of concurrent analysis of the ethical stakes, the modes of expressiveness, and the moral education involved in television series. Perhaps most conspicuously, there has been a lack of focus on the experience of the viewer. Cavell highlighted popular cinema's capacity to create a common culture for millions. This power has become dispersed across other bodies of work and practices, most notably TV series, which have largely appropriated the responsibility of widening the perspectives of their publics, a role once associated with the silver screen. Just as Cavell's reading of films involved moral perfectionism in its intent, this project is also perfectionist, extending a similar aesthetic and ethical method to readings of the small screen. Because TV series are works that are public and thus shared, and often global in reach, they fulfil an educational role—whether intended or not—and one that enables viewers to anchor and appreciate the value of their everyday experiences. Contributions from: William Rothman, Martin Shuster, Elisabeth Bronfen, Hugo Clémot, David LaRocca, Jeroen Gerrits, Stephen Mulhall, Michelle Devereaux, Thibaut de Saint-Maurice, Hent de Vries, Catherine Wheatley, Byron Davies, Sandra Laugier, Paul Standish, Robert Sinnerbrink.
An Analysis of Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority

An Analysis of Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority

Stanley Milgram is one of the most influential and widely-cited social psychologists of the twentieth century. Recognized as perhaps the most creative figure in his field, he is famous for crafting social-psychological experiments with an almost artistic sense of creative imagination – casting new light on social phenomena in the process. His 1974 study Obedience to Authority exemplifies creative thinking at its most potent, and controversial. Interested in the degree to which an “authority figure” could encourage people to commit acts against their sense of right and wrong, Milgram tricked volunteers for a “learning experiment” into believing that they were inflicting painful electric shocks on a person in another room. Able to hear convincing sounds of pain and pleas to stop, the volunteers were told by an authority figure – the “scientist” – that they should continue regardless. Contrary to his own predictions, Milgram discovered that, depending on the exact set up, as many as 65% of people would continue right up to the point of “killing” the victim. The experiment showed, he believed, that ordinary people can, and will, do terrible things under the right circumstances, simply through obedience. As infamous and controversial as it was creatively inspired, the “Milgram experiment” shows just how radically creative thinking can shake our most fundamental assumptions.

He makes a lot of noise and mess, but he's forgiven as does mend the TV. Not until the very end do we, or the hapless Wimbledon family, see just exactly what Stanley the dog has been planning all along!

An illustrated book aimed at 4-8 year olds Children are often more attentive than we give them credit for. Parents aren't. Kevin is a sensitive boy, who listens to his mum. Mum does not take any real notice of what Kevin does, preferring to concentrate her efforts in raising his awareness of the dangers that surround him in his everyday life. The vehicle for this education by fear is 'Great Uncle Stanley', a distant and unseen relative whose careless behaviour resulted in a series of spectacular mishaps. The book follows these misadventures, with Kevin's mental image of Great Uncle Stanley growing ever more dreadful through the cumulative effects of his various calamities. The mother is oblivious of the impact her homilies are having on Kevin. Eventually, Kevin's mental picture of Great Uncle Stanley is as grotesque as Dorian Gray's portrait after a particularly hedonistic session. When his mother announces that Great Uncle Stanley has paid them an unexpected call, Kevin's reaction is to run screaming from this hideous apparition. In the wake of Kevin's frantic departure Great Uncle Stanley (who bears none of the imagined scars) turns to Kevin's mother and warns her of the consequences of exaggerating life's dangers ... by doing the same to her.

They all share a love of the game and its power as a diversion from the harsher realities of life. Forget Fever Pitch, The Lives of Stanley B gets to the heart of why football matters - written by an author who properly understands the game.
