Moving On: Finding Happiness in a Changed World

Moving On: Finding Happiness in a Changed World

Stuart Perrin

"I've always been taken with aphorisms: one, two or three line words of wisdom that cut to the heart of the human condition, words we can think about and use as a reminder of why we're alive and the importance of love and joy in this world," says Mr. Perrin. "Moving On: Finding Happiness in a Changed World" touches on the human struggle to make sense of an absurd and often painful life. In those moments when we find ourselves alone and we have to confront an host of anxieties, insecurities, and inner pain, a sentence from a book like "Moving On..." can give insight into what people must do to eliminate stress and find joy and love in day to day activity. It can help us step out of darkness into light. Moving On is a book of street-smart, yet soul-wise aphorisms for those of us that seek peace in the center of an ever-changing world. Author Stuart Perrin assures us that peace and happiness both exist at the heart of even our craziest days, and that each of us can achieve clarity when we need it most. There are countless events that occur in our everyday lives that make the world seem "changed." Separation, divorce, job loss, politics, illness, and the death of a loved one- all of these are personal situations in which we need a little perspective and wisdom in order to move on. The perfect gift for anyone that has to deal with difficult life circumstances, Moving On offers thoughts both for staying "in the now" and grabbing opportunities that lie hidden right in front of you.

CBC BOOKS' "CANADIAN POETRY COLLECTIONS TO WATCH FOR IN FALL 2024"Imagining a vast blue expanse of what a poem might beThe Sky Is a Sky in the Sky is a laboratory of poetic approaches and experiments. It mines the personal and imaginary lives of Stuart Ross and portraits of his grief and internal torment, while paying homage to many of the poet’s literary heroes. It contains new entries in Ross’s ongoing Razovsky poems, prose poems, a remix of an entire poetry book by dear friend Nelson Ball, a couple of collaborative poems, some one-line poems, and lots more. In an era of thematic poetry and conceptual poetry books, this collection is a celebration of possibilities and miscellany."Stuart Ross doesn’t hold back, happily for us. In letting his poems go where they want to go, sometimes by leaps and bounds, he reminds us that poetic rules are meant to be broken and that the results, in the hands of a skillful poet, can be moving, or amusing, or subversive, or exhilarating, or all of the above. His work brims with surprises. From start to finish, The Sky Is a Sky in the Sky is a delightful and thoroughly engaging book." – Charles North, author of News, Poetry and Poplars: Poems/Selected Prose"Here, we’re invited to gawk at horror and kick it in the pants, but also to notice the horror within us, because we all have it, and Ross doesn’t shy away from the odd and uncomfortable. He’s easy with sentiment, honest about grief, clear about death being our final destination, and behooves us mightily to enjoy it while we can. This book contains some of Ross’s greatest love songs for the dead as well as some sideways laments for the living – in these poems we can see ourselves and our friendships, our future losses, and present mysteries examined with no preference or perfunctory reverence. Each time I read Stuart Ross’s work I feel grateful, hopeful, reminded to lift my skeleton up and enjoy the abundant wonders the world holds." – Gillian Wigmore, author of Orient"Stuart Ross is one of the most important poets to have found himself somehow on planet Earth, where readers have been rejoicing in his work for nearly six decades. He makes it seem easy: open your eyes, your ears, your heart; look into the world and write. However, to do so with such unflinching candour, many-layered humour, the deepest emotional intelligence, and rarest lyric acumen? No, you have to be Stuart Ross to bring all of everything to bear upon being alive in one’s time. To rejoice is also to mourn, of course, and these poems are afraid to do neither. Ross trusts poetry more than any of us, so poetry trusts him back: this book dazzles the very sunlight with what it knows, including of the estrangements of the self upon which poetry so often insists, and the fictitiousness of borders between the present and the past, dream and not-dream, hilarity and grief. Whoever you are, including the laws of physics, you will be startled and moved by The Sky Is a Sky in the Sky. At times a momentarily posthumous point of view propels the poems, but do not grieve (or do): the book is immortal." – Lisa Fishman, author of Mad World, Mad Kings, Mad Composition

"There are many aspects to this task of rabbinic training, but four closely related questions rise to the surface as requiring primary attention. The first is a question of description: What ought to be the functions performed by a messianic Jewish rabbi? The second is a question of legitimacy: What similarities exist between the functions performed by messianic Jewish rabbis and rabbis in the wider Jewish context such that the rabbinate in both contexts may legitimately be seen to be variations on the same theme, and the messianic Jewish rabbinate therefore legitimately a rabbinate? The third is a question of differentiation: How and why are the functions performed by a messianic Jewish rabbi contextually particularistic and therefore different from those performed byChristian clergy? In other words, how is a messianic rabbi more than just a Protestant Pastor with switched labels? The fourth is a question of biblicity: Is there biblical justification or precedent for the proposed paradigm of the rabbi as a surrogate priest? Each of these questions emerges from messianic Judaism's interaction with different but overlapping audiences. The question of description is addressed primarily to the messianic Jewish context. The question of legitimacy is addressed primarily to the wider Jewish world. The question of differentiation is addressed primarily to the church world. The question of biblicity is addressed both to the messianic Jewish context and the church world. And in all cases, looking over our shoulder is the general public." --from the Prologue

"To me the Palace of Versailles is peopled by the ghosts of many women. A few of them are dowdy and good, but by far the greater number are graceful and wicked. How infinitely easier it is to make a good bad reputation than to achieve even a bad good one! "Tell us stories about naughty children," we used to beseech our nurses. And as our years increase we still yawn over the doings of the righteous, while our interest in the ways of transgressors only strengthens."

Instead he got all twisted up and fell flat on his face The stamps flew high, the gift flew low and then here comes a riddle, for from his pocket flying fast out shot a juicy pickle. It hit the stamps and one stuck true then flew into the box... Colin leapt up and pulled the lid His eyes grew wide with shock Where should be letters piled high with stamps and envelopes, instead there was a staircase leading where? He did not know...He jumped into the postbox and ran down those spiral stairs. There ahead he saw the pickle being carried by a... hare? A postage hare in uniform official as they come, was carrying that pickle at quite a speedy run.It would not stop at Colin's shout so chase had to be made... Never had a stranger sight been seen 'neath Rathdowne Lane.Postage Hares all stopped and stared as Colin chased and chased. That postage hare was faster than young Colin had ever faced.Up and up and right and left and up and left and right. That pickle was almost in his reach, he reached with all his might His hand wrapped round that pickle, the hare let out a cry... It threw them out the tunnel and up into the sky And what a throw - so strong and true Over homes and trees and rocks. Colin landed perfectly Inside a letterbox Stuffed neat inside that box was he and feeling rather sad... The lid went up, two eyes looked down, The eyes of his Granddad Colin leapt up from that box Then sadly gave a sniff "I only have this pickle, I lost your birthday gift..."Granddad laughed and hugged young Colin, giving him a tickle... he didn't care about the gift, he just said "I love pickles "

Excerpt: We are all amply provided, with moral maxims, which we hold with more or less confidence, but an insight into their significance is not attained without reflection and some serious effort. Yet, surely, in a field in which there are so many differences of opinion, clearness of insight and breadth of view are eminently desirable. It is with a view to helping students of ethics in our universities and outside of them to a clearer comprehension of the significance of morals and the end of ethical endeavor, that this book has been written.I have, in the Notes appended to it, taken the liberty of making a few suggestions to teachers, some of whom have fewer years of teaching behind them than I have. I make no apology for writing in a clear and untechnical style, nor for reducing to a minimum references to literatures in other tongues than our own.
