With this original study, Melissa Mowry makes a strong contribution to a provocative interdisciplinary conversation about an important and influential sub genre: seventeenth-century political pornography. This book further advances our understanding of pornography's importance in seventeenth-century England by extending its investigation beyond the realm of cultural rhetoric into the realm of cultural practice. In addition to the satires which previous scholars have discussed in this context, Mowry brings to light hitherto unexamined pornographies as well as archival texts that reveal the ways in which the satires helped shape the social policies endured by prostitutes and bawds. Her study includes substantial archival evidence of prostitution from the Middlesex Sessions and the Bridewell Courtbooks. Mowry argues that Stuart partisans cultivated representations of bawds and prostitutes because polemicists saw the public sale of sex as republicanism's ideological apotheosis. Sex work, partisans repeatedly asserted, inherently disrupted ancestral systems of property transfer and distribution in favour of personal ownership, while the republican belief that all men owned the labour of their body achieved a nightmarish incarnation in the prostitute's understanding that the sexual favours she performed were labour. The prostitute's body thus emerged in the loyalist imagination as the epitome of the democratic body politic. Carefully grounded in original research, The Bawdy Politic in Stuart England, 1660-1714 is a cultural study with broad implications for the way we understand the historical constructions and legal deployments of women's sexuality.

They address important issues of the mid-nineteenth century in philosophy, science, economics, and politics. Cumulatively, these letters provide a humanistic view of Western Europe and its social problems. They add valuable perspective to what we know about the work of Mill and Comte, in a critical period of English and French thought.The correspondence begins with an admiring letter from Mill who considers himself a positivist at the tune and writes to Comte as to an elder colleague. A close friendship developed, in the course of which they discussed matters of common concern. Their understanding extends to personal experiences, including their respective mental crises at an early age. The opinions expressed about their contemporaries are significant and include comments on Thomas Carlyle, John and Sarah Austin, and Alexander Bain, on philosophers and major authors in France, Germany, and Italy. Mill and Comte eventually encountered issues on which they could not come to consensus, especially the equality of women. In China, John Leighton Stuart (1876-1962) is a controversial figure occupying an important position in the history of modern China and Sino-U.S. relations. This volume contains about 375 letters by John Stuart Mill since the publication of Earlier Letters in 1962 and Later Letters in 1972. Though it covers a vast range of topics, the collection has three specially interesting groups: a series of letters to Henry Cole, dealing amongst other things with the disposition of the London and Westminster Review; the full versions of letters to Theodor Gomperz, Mill's leading German disciple and translator, which had been thought destroyed; and recently found internal correspondence in the Examiners office of the East India company which sheds new light on Mill's career. The Editor's introduction, places the letters in context, gives details about the three special groups, and outlines the history of the collection. The letters are presented in full scholarly form, with notes giving information about the texts and their provenance, and also historical and biographical information. The specially valuable appendix consists of the first published check list of letters to Mill, with their location. Other appendices give variant readings from the Gomperz letters, a finding list of form letters signed by Mill in the India Office Library and Records, an index of correspondents represented in this volume, an index of persons and works cited in the letters, and an analytical index.
