Theodore the Great

Theodore the Great

Daniel Ruddy

Regnery History
2016
sidottu
Theodore Roosevelt has a complicated legacy. To some, he was the quintessential American patriot and hero, a valiant soldier and hawkish leader. Others remember him as the Progressive cultural icon, the trust-buster who split from the Republican Party. So who was the real Teddy Roosevelt? Daniel Ruddy’s new biography cuts through the impenetrable tangle of misconceptions and contradictions that have grown up over the last century and obscured our view of a man who remains one of the most controversial and misunderstood presidents in U.S. history. Weighing Roosevelt's lifetime of actions against his sometimes-contradictory Progressive rhetoric, Ruddy paints a portrait of a man who led by undeniably conservative principles, but who obfuscated his own legacy with populist speeches. By focusing on Roosevelt's actions and his effect on American history, Ruddy clears the cobwebs and presents a real and convincing case for remembering Theodore Roosevelt as a great conservative leader.
Theodore of Sykeon

Theodore of Sykeon

Theodore of Sykeon is one of the archetypal holy men of the late Roman world, a person whose intense ascetic regime earned him fame in the villages and cities of his Galatian homeland, where he was called upon to work a variety of miracles – cures for various ailments, prevention of natural disasters, and the exorcism of unclean spirits both from individuals and groups. His reputation for holiness led to appointment as bishop of Anastasiopolis, a responsibility he did not enjoy since its administrative commitments compromised his ascetic regime and conflicted with his sense of social justice. The location of his village on the main highway across Anatolia ensured that his fame was soon translated into contacts with travelling dignitaries, and this brought him to the attention of successive emperors and patriarchs of Constantinople. He made three trips to the Holy Land and visited the capital three times, where he met the emperors Maurice, Phocas, and Heraclius as well as the patriarchs Cyriacus, Thomas, and Sergius. Theodore’s disciple George, a future leader of the Sykeon monasteries, began composing this Life shortly after Theodore’s death in 613. Soon thereafter, his body was removed to Constantinople as a talisman, an event celebrated by Nicholas the Treasurer.
St Theodore the Studite's Defence of the Icons

St Theodore the Studite's Defence of the Icons

Torstein Theodor Tollefsen

St Theodore the Studite's Defence of the Icons provides an investigation of the icon-theology of St Theodore the Studite, mainly as it is presented in his three refutations of the iconoclasts, the Antirrhetici tres adversus iconomachos. Torstein Theodor Tollefsen explores Theodore´s 'philosophy of images', namely his doctrine of images and his arguments that justify the legitimacy of images in general and of Christ in particular. Tollefsen offers a historical, theological, and philosophical exploration of Theodore's doctrine of images and his arguments justifying the legitimacy of images and of Christ. In addition to the main elements of Theodore´s defence of the icon, like the Christological issue, the relation between image and prototype, the question of veneration, his explanation of why we may say of an image that 'this is Christ', and his innovative thinking on the representative character of the icon, the book has an introduction that places Theodore in the history of Byzantine philosophy: he has some knowledge of traditional logical topics and is able to utilize argumentative forms in countering his iconoclast opponents. The volume also provides an appendix which shows that the making of images is somehow natural given the character of Christianity as a religion.
A Theodore Dreiser Encyclopedia

A Theodore Dreiser Encyclopedia

Keith Newlin

Greenwood Press

For a century, Theodore Dreiser has represented for many readers a rebellious modernism whose novels both critiqued the American dream and embodied a bleakly deterministic perception of life. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was reluctantly published and then ignored by its publisher, who thought the book immoral. Another publisher withdrew his fifth novel, The Genius (1915), rather than face prosecution on obscenity charges. Dreiser did not enjoy widespread popularity and critical acclaim until his masterpiece, An American Tragedy, appeared in 1925. This reference is an authoritative guide to his life and works. Included are several hundred entries on each of Dreiser's books and short stories, as well as magazine and newspaper pieces he collected during his life. Noteworthy uncollected and posthumously collected works are given separate entries, as are major characters in the novels, family members, friends, and other persons important to understanding his writings. There are also entries on Dreiser's publishers, his major influences, the places and events important to his life, and the literary and social contexts of his works. Expert contributors wrote each of the entries, many of which cite works for further reading. The volume closes with a selected bibliography of works by and about Dreiser.

Finding Theodore and Ariminta

Finding Theodore and Ariminta

Byron Burmester

This is the story of Theodore and Ariminta Hunsaker Burmester. It follows the paths that each took and the people they encountered along the way, giving readers a detailed look at the hard work, hazards, hardships, joys and tragedies of American life during the mid to late 1800s.This story "has many facets. Some are bright and clear like that of Ariminta mortally wounded, a modern-day Lucretia, who's first thought was not of herself but of her baby that she believed was still in the burning house. Other facets are dark like Theodore's pointless duel with Judge Morford. Other parts of the story shine simply because the participants struggled and fought through incredible hardships."The book covers many more years for Theodore (1837-1895) than for Ariminta (1843-1869). Tragically, the life of this young wife and mother of two young boys was cut short at the hands of a farm worker. Ariminta's murder turned Theodore's life upside down and his behavior turned reckless for a time. Six months later, he married Jemima Humphies but their union did not last. A year after that marriage ended, Theodore married Maria Finch.Theodore led an eventful life: he crossed the Isthmus of Panama on foot, practiced law, was involved in a deadly duel and resultant murder trial, and later found time in his collections practice to assist in the legal defense of Brigham Young Hampton, accused of opening a brothel in order to trap federal officials during the polygamy prosecutions.Several vintage photographs, a bibliography, and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.2020, 51/2x81/2, paper, index, 278 pp.
