Southern Illinois University Press

This bibliography consists of 936 numbered entries, with references to a far greater number of works. The first part covers works by Malebranche and consists of six sections on his collected works, selections from his works, his individual works, translations of his works, his correspondence, and the controversies into which he entered. The second part deals with works on Malebranche and consists of other bibliographical sources, biographical references, and studies. As a critical bibliography, this book contains not only references to reviews but also a brief critical assessment for most entries. An extensive index is included and much of the material is cross-referenced. Entries note when a work has been superseded and refer the reader to the more recent work.
The Economic Effects of Surface Freight Deregulation

The Economic Effects of Surface Freight Deregulation

Clifford Winston; Thomas M. Corsi; Curtis M. Grimm; Carol A. Evans

Brookings Institution
1990
nidottu
For close to 100 years, America's surface freight industries, primarily rail and trucking, operated under the protective wing of the U.S. government. In 1980 Congress, finding vast inefficiencies in the two industries, substantially deregulated both, opening them at last to market competition.Deregulation has brought with it many changes?for firms within the industries, for their labor force, and for shippers and their customers. Clifford Winston, Thomas M. Corsi, Curtis M. Grimm, and Carol A Evans provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effect of the deregulation legislation on the rail and trucking industries.According to the authors, deregulation has made substantial progress in solving the two most vexing problems of the surface freight transportation industry?excessive rates in the trucking industry and insufficient returns on investment in the rail industry. Competition and efficiency have returned to both industries, and although the labor force in each has suffered wage and job losses, shippers and their customers have gained roughly $20 billion a year in benefits. The authors recommend policies that would continue to promote competition and the efficient use of highway and railway infrastructure.

Border Approaches

Border Approaches

Hastings Donnan; Thomas M. Wilson

University Press of America
1994
sidottu
In recent years, the world has witnessed enormous changes in the political borders between nation-states. These changes have highlighted the function and meaning of physical borders in the construction of nationality. While previous anthropological studies have examined the importance of cultural and symbolic boundaries between groups, this book primarily investigates how ethnicity, nationalism, and cultural identity are marked in everyday life at international borders. It is the first book to collect a wide range of anthropological views on this subject. Areas covered in this text include West Africa, the Turkish-Syrian border, India and the proposed Khalistan, the German-French border, the Portuguese-Spanish border, and Ireland. Contributors include Elizabeth Tonkin, Martin Stokes, Joyce Pettigrew, Tomke Lask, William Kavanagh, Amanda Shanks, Hastings Donnan, and Thomas M. Wilson.
The Greeks and the Environment

The Greeks and the Environment

Laura Westra; Thomas M. Robinson

Rowman Littlefield
1997
sidottu
Environmental ethicists have frequently criticized ancient Greek philosophy as anti-environmental for a view of philosophy that is counterproductive to environmental ethics and a view of the world that puts nature at the disposal of people. This provocative collection of original essays reexamines the views of nature and ecology found in the thought of Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and Plotinus. Recognizing that these thinkers were not confronted with the environmental degradation that threatens contemporary philosophers, the contributors to this book find that the Greeks nevertheless provide an excellent foundation for a sound theory of environmentalism.

Concord and Reform

Concord and Reform

Morimichi Watanabe; Thomas M. Izbicki

Variorum

Nicholas of Cusa is known as one of the most original philosophers of the 15th century, but by training he was a canon lawyer who received his degree from the University of Padua in 1423. The essays in this book analyse his legal and political ideas against the background of medieval religious, legal and political thought and its development in the Renaissance. The first two pieces deal with the legal ideas and humanism that affected Cusanus and with some of the problems faced by 15th-century lawyers, including his friends. The central section of the book also discusses how he reacted to the religious, legal and political issues of his day; Cusanus as reformer of the Church is a theme that runs through many of the essays. The final studies look at some of Cusanus' contemporaries, with special emphasis on Gregor Heimburg, the sharpest critic of Cusanus.
Prehistory Chickamauga

Prehistory Chickamauga

The two volumes that constitute The Prehistory of the Chickamauga Basin in Tennessee bring together the findings of one of the largest and most exhaustive archaeological digs ever conducted in North America. The excavations were carried out during the 1930s at thirteen archaeological sites now inundated by the Tennessee Valley Authority's Chickamauga Reservoir. The report on only one of the sites, Hiwassee Island, has been previously published. Thus, these volumes represent the first publication of the reports on the remaining twelve sites.Much archaeology was done in the Tennessee Valley during the Great Depression because of the combined need to put the unemployed to work and to retrieve information about the region's rich and complex prehistory before large tracts were submerged. The Chickamauga Basin investigations were administered through the University of Tennessee, with funds for labor supplied by the Works Progress Administration. Although the reports were not published at the time because of the beginning of World War II, they laid the foundations for subsequent archaeological research in the Upper Tennessee Valley. While the interpretations in these reports are now somewhat dated, the Chickamauga project developed the first comprehensive descriptions of the Native American cultures that lived near what is now the city of Chattanooga before and at the time of European contact. The investigations recovered a wealth of information about these former residents of the valley, such as detailed descriptions of their settlements, cultural practices, and material culture (including architecture, pottery, and stone, bone, and shell tools and ornaments). Also, by providing insights into the archaeological methods and techniques of the 1930s, these volumes form an important historical document on the status of the discipline more than a half-century ago.In her foreword and editor's notes, Lynne P. Sullivan places the investigations in historical context, discusses interpretations that have emerged since the Chickamauga project was first undertaken, and describes the process for compiling the reports.

This text is designed to bridge the gap between research and practice, by emphasizing practice from a conceptual viewpoint. The authors discuss and review the literature on online help and they provide a cognitive perspective on the design and evaluation issues. The goal is to provide a review and analysis of the issues in the design and evolution of online help systems. The book should be of interest to those conducting research on document design and technical writing in English and psychology and in the college of engineering; interface design in computer science, psychology, and human factors; and human factors issues in government and industry labs, the defence industry, the communications industry, and the computer industry.
