The Supreme Court Under Earl Warren, 1953-1969

The Supreme Court Under Earl Warren, 1953-1969

Michal R. Belknap

In The Supreme Court under Earl Warren, 1953-1969; Michal R. Belknap recounts the eventful history of the Warren Court. Chief Justice Earl Warren's sixteen years on the bench were among the most dramatic, productive, and controversial in the history of the Supreme Court. Warren's tenure saw the Court render decisions that are still hotly debated today. Its rulings addressed such issues as school desegregation, separation of church and state, and freedom of expression. In 1954 Warren and his colleagues struck down school segregation as unconstitutional. They then participated in a broad campaign to win equal rights for African Americans. While it cautiously dismantled McCarthy-era infringements on civil liberties, the Warren Court boldly expanded freedom of expression in other areas. Frankly using constitutional law as a tool to promote political and social reform, the Warren Court revolutionized criminal procedure and mandated an end to the malapportionment of state legislatures and other representative institutions. It both invented and constitutionally guaranteed individuals' rights to privacy with respect to sexual matters. Its rulings did much to advance the agenda of the liberal reformers who dominated American politics during the 1960s. But these rulings also angered many Americans, who accused the Warren Court of running God out of the public schools, handcuffing the police, and flooding the country with smut. Although it staggered to an end in 1969 amid controversy and scandal, the Warren Court revolutionized constitutional law. In the entire history of the Supreme Court, only John Marshall's tenure can compare with Warren's in respect to the significance of its decisions and its impact on the development of American constitutional law. No other Court has had greater impact on American culture and mores than that of Earl Warren. Drawing on internal memoranda as well as published opinions of the justices, Belknap reveals the philosophical debates and personality conflicts behind the Court's decisions. He also assesses the overall accomplishments and failures of the Warren Court and places them in both their political and social contexts.

The United States in the Time of Warren G. Harding: 1921-1923

This is the story of the greatest of them all: Warren G. Harding. All right, maybe Harding wasn't the greatest, but maybe he had a few good qualities. Mike Donovan tells the story in a fair-minded fashion. The USA rejected the League of Nations in Harding's time. History has condemned the Republicans for this, but is there more to this story than you know? Mike offers some interesting arguments on that one. Most of the book is basic information, and there is a bit of a focus on foreign affairs. Read about the Teapot Dome, the Washington Naval Treaties, the first woman in the Senate and the always exciting Fordney-McCumber Tariff.
A Passion for Preservation: Katherine Warren and the Shaping of Modern Newport
Today, Newport is renowned as one of the most historically significant and architecturally intact cities in America. In the years following World War II, this heritage was under siege; the city's rich collection of colonial buildings and Gilded Age mansions was threatened by demolition and redevelopment. Katherine Warren, California-born and New Orleans-bred, intervened by galvanizing her adopted community around the protection of its architectural heritage and, in doing so, contributed greatly to the city's revitalization. Warren's passion for preservation was complemented by an equally fervent interest in modernist art; her collection of works by such artists as Picasso and Mondrian rivaled that of the nation's leading patrons of twentieth-century art.Warren's story stretches far beyond her pivotal role in founding and leading The Preservation Society of Newport County; her pursuit of community engagement, creative adaptive uses for historic structures, and economic development through preservation proved avant-garde, earning Newport national recognition and revealing Warren as a thought leader in preservation nationwide.

Candice closed the book and held it to her chest. She was on her way to meet the Kid and tell his story. She left her dull life as a typesetter back in Baltimore, Maryland, so she could be a real writer. But even more than that, she wanted to be with the Knuckle-Smash Kid. The stories started around six years ago. She would read each one from cover to cover. Each story was more violent, more seductive than the last. The Kid was everything the men back in Baltimore weren't. She would go there, write his story, and then throw herself at him, hoping he would make her a woman. She was twenty years old and on an adventure of a lifetime.A small-town sheriff's life is turned upside down when a young writer comes to town in search of his story but not his real story. Along the way, the young writer Candice Martin learns that not everything printed is true and the man she fell in love within the book was different from the real Edward Warren.
