Ultimately a book about ageing and the consideration of death, this collection moves from the warm valley winds of Hawai‘i to the seasons of a garden in Auckland. In Hawai‘i Wendt watches the changing shadows of the Ko‘olau mountains from his verandah; considers the nature of mauli , the seat of life; walks protected in his partner’s perfumed slipstream to work; and writes to fellow poet Hone Tuwhare from the excesses of Las Vegas. In the second half of the book we move to the garden in Ponsonby in 40 vivid ‘garden’ poems that are the triumph of the collection. Here joints need replacing, poets grow older, tsunami destroy and friends slip away, but a spirit of renewal and humour pervades – along with prowling cats, baking muffins, flashing kingfishers and visiting mokopuna. And scattered among the garden poems will be some of Wendt’s inky, drawn poems – the best are about the Samoan tsunami or galu afi . From Manoa to a Ponsonby Garden is an extraordinary, alert and confident book by one of our most celebrated writers.

This is a story about a sunflower that blows into a perennial garden. This sunflower is considered a weed by Mr. Gardener since he did not plan or plant it. But Mrs. Gardener fell in love with this sunflower. Mr. Gardener not knowing how loved the sunflower is and considering it a weed, pulls it out. He sees how upset Mrs. Gardener is so takes the seeds from the sunflower and plants them in his perennial garden and also adds a water drip line for it. He fertilizes and cares for it. The sunflower grows back the next summer and is welcomed. The story says that welcoming not planned into the garden expands the amount of love and doesn't reduce the love of those already there.

In this book, Windy Dryden presents how he works with anxiety in Single-Session Therapy (SST). In doing so, he provides a transcript of an actual session he did with 'Elizabeth', who wanted help with health anxiety. Windy provides an in-depth analysis of the session as it unfolded, demonstrating how his approach is tailored to what the client wants to take away from the session and does not follow a manualised approach to health anxiety. In addition, 'Elizabeth's' follow-up questionnaire is presented, which was completed three months after her session with Windy. Finally, Windy reflects on some issues that his work with 'Elizabeth' raises, including her reflections as appropriate, and makes some concluding remarks. This book shows what can be achieved in a short time period with a person experiencing a common form of anxiety.Windy Dryden is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths University of London and is in independent practice. His interests include helping people at the point of need and encouraging therapists to work briefly with clients. He has written or edited over 285 books.
