Introducing Christian Ministry Leadership

Introducing Christian Ministry Leadership

William D M Carrell

The demand for integrity--genuine spirituality, exemplary character, and competent skills--among ministry leaders has never been greater. This book introduces students and beginning practitioners to the theological and practical elements that make for healthy leadership and leaders in Christian ministry. How ministry leaders understand who God is and who they themselves are governs every aspect of their work and well-being, and how they understand the nature of the church and their role as ministry leaders forms their sense of purpose and identity. This book is written from the perspective of ministry leadership in Christian traditions with congregational polity, but there is much that applies to ministry leadership in all Christian traditions. The text introduces terms, ideas, and skills foundational for getting started in ministry leadership and for more advanced study in each area. Most importantly, the book integrates biblical, historical, and theological reflection with the description of practical skills, demonstrating how students themselves can think theologically about ministry leadership. Thinking clearly about context, calling, and character provides the perspective from which to understand the essential practices of ministry leadership and to conduct them with integrity.

K. K. Kawakami, the most prolific journalist writing on U.S.-Japan relations in the forty-years before Pearl Harbor, analyzed and described the interaction between the country of his birth and his adopted country. His more than 2,000 publications show a gradual decline in US-Japan relations from the early twentieth century to Japan’s attack on the US. K. K. Kawakami and U.S.-Japan Relations: The Forty-Year Road to Pearl Harbor provides a careful reading of his analysis of U.S.-Japan relations to show that both countries bear responsibility for the tragic clash in Hawaii. From the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) until the Japanese attack on Manchuria (1931), the United States bore a major responsibility with its anti-Japanese policies, racial discrimination, and failure to recognize Japan’s role in in the world but with Japan’s aggression in Manchuria, Japan became the primary actor. Relations between Japan and the U.S. declined gradually over a long period with both sides bearing responsibility.

If he's not careful, he'll end up right back where he started.Dead and on his way to hell.Warning and minor spoiler: This novel contains graphic violence, undefined relationships/harem, unconventional opinions/beliefs, forced political marriage (and consummation), and a hero who is as tactful as a dog at a cat show. Slaves of the Lord Jesus Christ

Slaves of the Lord Jesus Christ

Slaves of the Lord Jesus Christ is a study of Paul's concept that the one who professes faith in Jesus Christ is indeed a slave of Jesus Christ, the believer's new Lord. Beginning with the focal verse of 1 Corinthians 7:22, ". . . He who was a free man when he was called is Christ's slave," The author analyzes Paul's use of doulos and several other Greek words that are translated in English as "slave," "servant," or "minister." The book explores the Hebrew and Roman slavery practices of the First Century A. D. to provide cultural relevance. The author has included a chapter on the implications of Paul's thought for the Church today. Although the study is somewhat technical in nature it is balanced with a logical flow, and an interesting writing style.
The Pathway to Glory: presented in The Combined Gospels of (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)
This book is based on notes compiled in the search to gain a better understanding of the teaching and life of Jesus Christ. The most authoritative source for gaining this understanding is the gospels. However, since each gospel was written to highlight certain aspects of Jesus' life, no single gospel tells the complete story. Matthew presents Jesus as Christ, the King who came in fulfilment of prophecy, and Mark as the Servant of God. Luke reveals Jesus as the ideal man, and John brings out the divinity of the Christ made manifest in the humanity of Jesus shown in the healing of sin, disease and death. But how much more might we see if the four gospels could be read in chronological order? Asking that question several years ago was the beginning of a study that resolved many of the seeming discrepancies between the gospels, provided a deeper insight into the tremendous resistance Jesus faced, and brought a greater appreciation for the magnificent way he overcame that resistance. When these discoveries were shared with a few friends, they asked if they could have copies of the notes for their own study. Sometime later it was suggested that these notes be printed and made available for others to read. The compiler is grateful to those seekers for truth who have shared their understanding and insights. Truth is impersonal, no one has a monopoly on it. For this reason the compiler has freely read the writings of others regardless of religious denomination. Hopefully readers will find helpful insights in this book, and be inspired to expand their search for Truth, for Jesus has promised: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Despite losing every friend in his unit and suffering from torture and deprivation that would "warp men souls," Bill Miner professed, "I am lucky. People fell beside me and people were blown apart beside me. Anywhere I went as a prisoner, I tried to be aware of the situation and use it the best I could to survive." This fascinating and arresting true story features excerpts from Bill Miner's personal prison diary, which he kept despite the accompanying risk of torture or even death, along with photos and post-war recollections.

A Family Practice is the sweeping saga of four generations of doctors, Russell men seeking innovative ways to sustain themselves as medical practitioners in the American South from the early nineteenth to the latter half of the twentieth century. The thread that binds the stories in this saga is one of blood, of medical vocations passed from fathers to sons and nephews. This study of four generations of Russell doctors is an historical study with a biographical thread running through it. The authors take a wide-ranging look at the meaning of intergenerational vocations and the role of family, the economy, and social issues on the evolution of medical education and practice in the United States.

Without question, the greatest argument against the Christian faith concerns the moral dilemma, that is: how can there be a good God when evils such as pain and unjust suffering exist? Here, the arguments and outcries against the injustice of suffering are given a character; one who invites the reader to join in his wandering, to wrestle with God. Through all the shouting and accusations made, there is something ironic in these charges, something deeply Christian, something that is outraged at the evil it perceives and demands that something is done about it. William D. Brannen invites the reader to embark on this journey of faith, to walk through doubt and confusion. Here, Brannen gives voice to the skeptic, proposing that doubt may not be the mere absence of faith, rather, it may just be a necessary growing pain that all Christians who are serious about their faith must go through.
