The Foundations of Topological Graph Theory
C.Paul Bonnington; Charles H.C. Little
Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2011
nidottu
This is not a traditional work on topological graph theory. No current graph or voltage graph adorns its pages. Its readers will not compute the genus (orientable or non-orientable) of a single non-planar graph. Their muscles will not flex under the strain of lifting walks from base graphs to derived graphs. What is it, then? It is an attempt to place topological graph theory on a purely combinatorial yet rigorous footing. The vehicle chosen for this purpose is the con cept of a 3-graph, which is a combinatorial generalisation of an imbedding. These properly edge-coloured cubic graphs are used to classify surfaces, to generalise the Jordan curve theorem, and to prove Mac Lane's characterisation of planar graphs. Thus they playa central role in this book, but it is not being suggested that they are necessarily the most effective tool in areas of topological graph theory not dealt with in this volume. Fruitful though 3-graphs have been for our investigations, other jewels must be examined with a different lens. The sole requirement for understanding the logical development in this book is some elementary knowledge of vector spaces over the field Z2 of residue classes modulo 2. Groups are occasionally mentioned, but no expertise in group theory is required. The treatment will be appreciated best, however, by readers acquainted with topology. A modicum of topology is required in order to comprehend much of the motivation we supply for some of the concepts introduced.

West Papua is the western half of New Guinea, the second-largest island in the world, and unlike its neighbor Papua New Guinea, it is still struggling to gain its independence. While Papua New Guinea, a former Australian-administered territory, became independent in 1975, West Papua is under Indonesia's control. The United Nations General Assembly provided the necessary support to carry out a self-determination referendum, but key administrative parties circumvented or subverted the process. As a result, West Papuans have been denied their freedom, which has caused massive suffering and loss of life. In this book on the current international status of West Papua, the authors explain the history of the island, from its discovery along the spice route in the 1500s to the arrival of the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch-up to the present day. More importantly, they explain how West Papua could gain true independence if the United Nations and its members fulfilled their legal and moral obligations.
Two eyewitness accounts of the disaster of Kut and afterThe First World War as it was fought in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) against the Ottoman Turkish Empire has received considerably less attention from British historians than other aspects of that conflict. While this was indisputably a 'side show theatre' of the greater struggle, it was nevertheless a difficult campaign, fought in an unforgiving landscape, often in punishing heat where disease took a greater toll of life than bullets. Most notably for the Allies it brought about a crushing defeat in the siege and fall of Kut which has become a stain on British military history in consequence of the treatment of prisoners of war by the Turks after the surrender. This book contains two first-hand accounts by Indian Army officers. These accounts are quite different but together they give an excellent insight into the experiences of those who defended Kut. The first account takes the reader through the actions (including the Battle of Ctesiphon) which led to the occupation of Kut in 1915, and graphically through the traumatic days when the besieged garrison fought to hold on until the relief column arrived. The second account continues the story as troops were marched into captivity. The author in company with a small party of companions decided to escape and his account of their bid for freedom makes for fascinating and thrilling reading.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The Bible says, contrary to popular opinion, that most of us will be denied a heavenly eternity. Unless (even believers) acknowledge that truth, they set in motion a self-fulfilling prophecy of darkness. The path to the kingdom is not a secret, but to far too many, it is unknown.

The Private Planning Association of Canada initiated the Atlantic Economic Studies Program to study the implications for Canada of trade liberalization and closer economic integration among the nations bordering the North Atlantic. Over twenty studies by leading economists, which point out the significance of international trade for the structure and growth of the Canadian economy, have been published in a series of thirteen volumes. This is the last in the series, and it summarizes the conclusions expressed in the previous studies in chapters dealing with such topics as the growth of world markets and changing trade patterns, free trade alternatives for Canada, and the structure of the Canadian economy.
