Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, in 1803. However, it was not until after her death in 1817 that it was published, along with her other novel, Persuasion. The novel is a satire of Gothic novels, which were quite popular at the time in 1798-99. Mais ne vaut-il pas mieux, apr s tout, que le voyageur ait quelques foss s sauter de temps en temps, au lieu de rester enfonc dans la vase, que le lecteur ait imaginer des choses d'invention facile, au lieu d'avoir parcourir les longues pages d'une ennuyeuse explication ? J'ai, par exemple, retranch toute cette merveilleuse machine de la Dame Blanche, ainsi que les beaux vers qui y ont rapport dans le manuscrit original. Vous conviendrez avec moi que le go t public ne favorise pas aujourd'hui ces l gendes superstitieuses, qui faisaient la fois les d lices et la terreur de nos anc tres. J'ai de m me supprim bien des faits, bien des circonstances qui faisaient mieux ressortir l'enthousiasme fervent de la m re Magdeleine et de l'Abb pour l'ancienne religion. Nous n' prouvons pas maintenant beaucoup de sympathie pour ces opinions, qui formaient alors en Europe le plus puissant et le plus f cond des principes, si nous en exceptons toutefois la r forme, qui les a combattues avec tant de succ s.
