América Latina contiene un debate entre la resistencia de sus tradiciones y la contemporaneidad de sus atrasos, entre las contradicciones de su modernización y las ambigüedades de su desarrollo, entre lo temprano de su modernismo y lo tardío y heterogéneo de su modernidad. En estos debates las ciencias sociales se reencuentran con la reflexión filosófica y a su vez con la experiencia cotidiana. Esta experiencia cotidiana es la que tanto o más que la crisis de los paradigmas, nos está exigiendo cambiar no solo los esquemas sino las preguntas. Este debate está hoy vinculado de manera muy especial al campo de la comunicación que se ha vuelto crucial a la hora de imaginar y nombrar los nuevos modelos de sociedad, como la ‘sociedad de la información’ donde la información se convierte en algo vital para su funcionamiento y desarrollo y además la sociedad se organiza siguiendo las lógicas de los modelos de comunicación. La comunicación cobra relevancia en la renovación de los modelos de análisis de la acción social, en la renovación de la agenda de investigación y en la reformulación epistemológica y política de la teoría crítica. La comunicación pasa a ser elemento constitutivo de las nuevas condiciones del saber. El saber ya no está al servició de unir sino que representa una apertura a un horizonte ilimitado de exploración a la vez que expone el carácter local de todos los discursos. Este libro recoge textos de los últimos años sobre todo de los años 90, dispersos en revistas y libros colectivos, muchos son reescritos en el campo de tensiones políticas y estéticas donde se anclan los Estudios Culturales. En este ejercicio algunos textos se pisan los bordes entre ellos retomando ideas similares para esclarecerlas o desplegarlas. ~ Latin America encapsulates a debate between the resistance of its traditions and the contemporaneity of its backwardness, between the contradictions of its modernization and the ambiguities of its development, between its early modernism and its late and heterogeneous modernity. In these debates, the social sciences meet again with philosophical reflection and, in turn, with daily experience. This daily experience is the one that, as much or more than the crisis of the paradigms, is demanding us to change not only the established structures but also the questions. This debate is today linked in a very special way to the field of communication, which has become crucial when it comes to imagining and naming new models of society, such as the 'information society' where information becomes vital for its operation and development and also society is organised following the logic of communication models. Communication becomes relevant in the renewal of analysis models of social action, in the renewal of the research agenda and in the epistemological and political reformulation of critical theory. Communication becomes a constitutive element of the new conditions of knowledge. Knowledge is no longer at the service of uniting but represents an opening to an unlimited horizon of exploration while exposing the local character of all discourses. This book collects texts from recent years, especially from the 90s, scattered in magazines and collective books, many are rewritten in the field of political and aesthetic tensions where Cultural Studies is anchored. In this exercise, some texts step on each other's toes, taking up similar ideas to clarify or broaden them.

Having begun his studio practice as a painter and draftsman, in 1985 Al Taylor (1948-99) devised a uniquely innovative approach to process and materials that enveloped drawings and three-dimensional objects as he created compositions that were grounded in the formal concerns of painting. This catalogue presents a comprehensive examination of Taylor's "Pet Stains" and "Puddles," which encompass a large grouping of interconnected series that were created between 1989 and 1992; as well as works from Taylor's later series "Full Gospel Neckless" that the artist made in Denmark for his 1997 solo exhibition at Galleri Tommy Lund. The objects and drawings that comprise these series demonstrate Taylor's relentless curiosity about the process of seeing. This fully illustrated publication features new scholarship on Taylor's work by Mimi Thompson.

Al Taylor (1948-99) began his studio practice as a painter and although he is more widely known for the three-dimensional works he started making in 1985, throughout his career, regardless of the medium, Taylor's oeuvre was fundamentally grounded in the formal concerns of painting. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at David Zwirner in spring 2017, this is the first book to focus exclusively on the artist's works on canvas. Featuring a selection of 26 rarely seen paintings created between 1971 and 1980 that embody the subtleties of reduction and restraint, they nonetheless have hints of the idiosyncratic playfulness that would come to characterize Taylor's later works. New scholarship by poet and art critic John Yau examines the visual relationships that connect Taylor's paintings, drawings and sculptural objects, and a conversation conducted by Mimi Thompson between painters Stanley Whitney and Billy Sullivan--all of whom knew Taylor well--provides insight into his reputation as an "artist's artist."
