Les vestiges d'un mur s paraient le jardin d labr de la cour, o l'on avait, depuis peu, vers du sable et pass le r teau. l'extr mit des d pendances qu'il habitait, c' taient des curies b ties dans un amusant d sordre, qui multipliait les recoins garnis d'arbrisseaux fous et de vigne vierge. Jusque sur le domaine d ferlaient des bois de sapins qui le cachaient tout le pays plat, sauf vers l'est, o l'on apercevait des collines bleues couvertes de rochers et de sapins encore. Le Grand Meaulnes, Premi re partie, chapitre XV: La Rencontre PREMIERE PARTIE Arriv e du Grand Meaulnes Fran ois, quinze ans, narrateur du r cit, est le fils de M. et Mme Seurel, instituteurs de Sainte-Agathe, en Sologne. Il fr quente le Cours Sup rieur qui pr pare au brevet d'instituteur. Un mois apr s la rentr e, un nouveau compagnon de dix-sept ans vient habiter chez eux. "L'arriv e d'Augustin Meaulnes fut pour moi le commencement d'une vie nouvelle" crit Fran ois. La personnalit myst rieuse d'Augustin, que les l ves appellent bient t "le grand Meaulnes", va troubler le rythme monotone de l' tablissement scolaire et fasciner tous les l ves. Le d part de Meaulnes "Environ huit jours avant No l", un l ve doit aller chercher les grands-parents de Fran ois Seurel la gare. M. Seurel d signe l' l ve Moucheboeuf. Meaulnes se tait. Une conversation, apr s l' cole, dans l'atelier du mar chal-ferrant le laisse songeur. Le lendemain, on s'aper oit qu'il a disparu. Il a emprunt la voiture et la jument du p re Florentin. Le soir, un homme ram ne la carriole de Florentin, mais aucune trace de Meaulnes. Il r appara t apr s trois jours, l'air trange et ne veut dire personne o il tait. Sit t rentr , il tablit un myst rieux petit plan pour retrouver le chemin qu'il a emprunt lors de son escapade. Durant les semaines qui suivent, Fran ois est intrigu par l'attitude de Meaulnes qui, la nuit, "arpentait la chambre de long en large", comme s'il voulait repartir. Il remarque aussi le "gilet de marquis" que porte son ami sous ses v tements d' colier.
