Thoughts and moods are chemical reactions in your brain that you might think you are powerless to control. But modern science has shown beyond doubt that changing your behaviour and thought patterns can rewire the neurological pathways of your brain to literally change how you think, feel and view yourself. Thought; moods; rewiwirning brain pattens; practical tools; exercises; positive thinking; exercise; meditation; In The Neuroscience of Self-Love, Alexis Fernandez-Preiksa takes the theory out of neuroscience and gives you practical tools and exercises to create a new self that is happier, more balanced and less dependent on others for validation. By re-engineering your habits, optimising your decision-making, curbing negative thoughts and harnessing the power of exercise and meditation, you will become more centred, connected and creative, and learn how to trust, prioritise and truly love yourself.
The Ethics of Digital Ghosts

The Ethics of Digital Ghosts

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are enabling the construction of “digital ghosts”: algorithmic reconstructions of deceased individuals based on patterns of interaction in their text messages, social media posts, and other personal data. This book develops an ethics of digital ghosts using resources from classical Chinese philosophy.Bereaved people have reported that conversations with digital ghosts can be surprisingly comforting and beneficial. However, there are concerns that they can be harmful, whether by preventing a hard but necessary acknowledgment of loss, producing ongoing dependence, or encouraging instrumentalization of our beloved dead. Building on some suggestive comparisons between digital remains and physical remains, this book uses resources from classical Chinese philosophy to connect concerns from funerary ethics to those presented by AI today. Confucianism, Mohism, and Zhuangism were remarkable for their rich, detailed discussions of the ethics of handling physical remains. This book updates and extends these concerns to apply to digital ghosts. It explores topics including the role of rituals and traditions in communal mourning, the epistemic consequences of fragmented standards for remembrance and data reuse, and the value of creative transformation and adaptation. The result is a psychologically plausible, culturally informed, and afterlife-neutral grounding for thinking about the ethics of digital ghosts. The Ethics of Digital Ghosts will appeal to researchers and graduate students working in applied ethics, moral psychology, philosophy of technology, technology and AI ethics, cross-cultural philosophy, and classical Chinese philosophy.

First published in 1899, with a second edition following in 1900 – just four years prior to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War – this in-depth study of Russia’s great expansion into Asia describes in detail the policies which brought it about. It is based on over 200 sources, both from Russian and British official documents. The accounts of the military expeditions have been drawn primarily from Russian sources whilst the part played by diplomacy is sourced from official correspondence and British government publications. Alexis Krausse saw Russian foreign policy as inherently expansionist and with Russia once again flexing its muscles in the war with Ukraine, this book has an enduring relevance and provides a comprehensive background to Anglo-Russian diplomatic history. It will be of interest to scholars and students in Asian Studies and those interested in 19th century colonial history in the region, as well as Russian Tzarist history.
