Police Mission

Police Mission

What is the best management style for the police? Police Mission discusses the values and norms inherent in the American police mission, and examines how police respond to challenges that arise while attempting to uphold this mission. It reveals that the way officers are being trained in ethics and human relations are not effective as they could be, and argues that policing has to move towards a greater emphasis on human values, moral sensitivity, and discerning judgment. A large number of themes ranging from personnel management, occupational culture, and innovative experiments in US policing techniques are examined. Several organizational theories as well as examples of international policing efforts from England to Japan are also analyzed. An important contribution to police literature, this book will be a valuable aid to students of criminology as well as practitioners and researchers of police science.

New applications for composite materials are being developed at a rapid pace. However, their complex microstructures present considerable challenges for nondestructive testing and characterization. Ultrasonic waves provide quantitative means of nondestructive evaluation of these materials and structures. For this purpose, it is necessary to obtain a clear understanding of the characteristic features of guided elastic wave propagation in such materials and structures and their dynamic response..Elastic Waves in Composite Media and Structures presents effective analytical and numerical techniques to study the characteristic features of elastic guided waves in fiber reinforced laminated media. The book closely examines the salient features of dispersive guided modes and how they are modified by defects, inhomogeneities, and boundaries. An accompanying CD-ROM contains executable computer programs, which can be used to simulate different scenarios for designing and interpreting ultrasonic experiments. Using the extensive numerical results provided by this cutting-edge resource, researchers and practitioners will gain valuable insight into how to develop effective methods for nondestructive testing of composite materials.

Positive Deviance (PD) is an approach to social change that enables communities and organizations to discover the wisdom they already have, and then to act on it. The premise of PD is that in every community there are certain individuals or groups whose uncommon practices or strategies enable them to find better solutions to problems than neighbors and peers who have access to the same resources. PD is led by people in the community who help identify and spread the successful practices. Ideas for change are more likely to be accepted and adopted when they are based on existing local wisdom than they are when outside exports try to impose them. This book tells the remarkable story of how a people-centered approach to organizational and social change, accompanied by sound scientific and technical expertise, yielded positive quality outcomes for ordinary citizens, health care institutions and their patients, and society in general. This work draws upon the collective wisdom and experience of infection control practitioners, doctors, public health authorities, nurses, social and organizational change practitioners, health care administrators, patients and front line workers. Additional benefits of use of the PD process to fight infection turned out to be improved workplace relationships, healthier and more resilient organizational cultures, and expanded networks of people in many fields and geographical locations who shared ideas, resources and the inspiration of their own contributions to saving lives."The Positive Deviance movement is changing the landscape of how we achieve transformation and change in systems." Peter Block, Author, Community: The Structure of Belonging."Inviting Everyone....chronicles the astonishing achievements possible when people truly work together and are aided by pioneering processes like Positive Deviance."Nicholas Wolter, MD, CEO, Billings Clinic.Contact info@plexusinstitute, org for volume discounts.

Biomimetics provide new strategy that translates our knowledge of biological system and create new synthetic pathways to mimic biological processes. Three approaches are being used for the creation of new tissues by mimicking natural ones which includes the tissue engineering triad; the cells, mediators and a biocompatible matrix. It is a challenge to design and fabricate new biomimetic materials like enamel, dentin, cementum, pulp, bone and periodontal ligament. Focusing on to the future, we should direct our goal to regenerate the diseased and necrotic tissues rather than replacing them with some conventional replacement materials.
