For 70 years, people have turned to one book to learn about Northwest trees: Trees to Know in Oregon. This new edition, retitled Trees to Know in Oregon and Washington, expands its scope to cover more territory and include more trees. The book was first published in 1950. Charles R. Ross, an Oregon State University Extension forester, wanted to introduce readers to the towering giants in their backyards. Since then, Edward C. Jensen has stewarded the publication through several more editions. This edition features several rare species native to southwest Oregon. It also updates scientific names and adds a new section on how Northwest forests are likely to be affected by changing climates. Since its initial publication, Trees to Know has become a mainstay for students, gardeners, small woodland owners and visitors to the Pacific Northwest. Along with all the details on native conifers, broadleaves, and more than 50 ornamental trees, readers will find: More than 400 full-color photos and 70 maps depicting habitat, range and forest type.Easy-to-follow identification keys.Handy guides to help distinguish one variety from another. The story of Northwest forests — past, present and future.

Edward C. Carter II began this project to create a souvenir for the American Philosophical Soc. (APS) 250th Anniversary Celebration in 1993. The APS is the oldest learned society in the U.S. and one of the most prestigious organizations of its kind in the world. The story of the APS and those men and women members who have helped promote useful knowledge throughout the years is an extraordinary story. The general observations on these achievements here are intended to serve as an introduction to this account of the APS. Now midway through its third century, its form and flavor remarkably little changed, the APS is engaged in promoting useful knowledge, as it has always been. Illustrations.
Therapeutic Targeting of RAS Mutant Cancers

Therapeutic Targeting of RAS Mutant Cancers

The KRAS oncogene is believed to be the most common single nucleotide variant oncogene in human cancer. Historically, efforts to target KRAS and the other RAS GTPases have struggled. More recently, efforts have focused on identifying and exploiting features unique to specific oncogenic mutations. This has led to the first FDA approval for a RAS targeted therapy. This new agent is a covalent inhibitor that reacts with the cysteine residue created by a codon 12 glycine to cysteine (G12C) mutation within KRAS. Mutant-specific strategies may also exist for other KRAS single nucleotide variants, and recent studies provide examples and mechanisms.
