Clyde Edgerton

nidottu
Clyde Edgerton’s Raney is the comic love story of a marriage between Raney, a small-town Southern Baptist, and Charles, a librarian with liberal leanings from Atlanta, united by their shared enthusiasm for country music. The novel both interrogates and honors the faiths and foibles of its subjects as the relationship is tested through trials and revelations. Despite the couple’s differences, their marriage slowly evolves into a relationship of equals in which both are willing to compromise for the good of the other and the marriage. Told though Raney’s naive and mesmerizing perspective as a southern storyteller, serious and sometimes heartbreaking moments give way to a humorous and joyful tale that pokes fun at and holds respect for just about everyone who passes through these pages. Raney, Edgerton’s first novel, was originally published in 1985. It represents some of Edgerton’s most comic, candid, and ambitious writing. This Southern Revivals edition includes a new introduction by the author and a preface from series editor Robert H. Brinkmeyer Jr., director of the University of South Carolina Institute for Southern Studies.

Clyde S. Kilby is rare among the best expositors of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and their circle of friends in that he became personally acquainted not only with Lewis and Tolkien, but also Lewis’s brother Major Warren Lewis, Owen Barfield, Lord David Cecil, and others of the Inklings. He particularly captured the soul of C.S. Lewis in his lectures, articles and books, which guided his vision in creating and curating the prestigious Wade Collection at Wheaton College, Illinois. This delightful book makes available Dr. Kilby’s wide-ranging and inspiring take on Lewis, Tolkien and the affinities they shared with their circle, the Inklings, in their enchantment with profound thought vibrant with imaginative wonder which took them beyond “the walls of the world”. (Colin Duriez Inklings scholar, author of The Oxford Inklings)

In his eighth deliciously funny novel, Clyde Edgerton introduces us to the irrepressible Lil Olive, who's recently arrived at the Rosehaven Convalescence Center to recuperate from a bad fall. Lil longs to be back in her own apartment, and since her driver's license doesn't expire until her ninety-seventh birthday, she also longs to get back behind the wheel of her sporty '89 Olds. To pass the time until independence, Lil strikes up some new friendships. Mrs. Maudie Lowe and Mrs. Beatrice Satterwhite, who are laying bets on whether Clara Cochran's glass eye comes out at night. And L. Ray Flowers, the freelance evangelical preacher with fancy white hair who sings his sermons, strums a mean guitar, and aspires to an even higher calling. Keeping a watchful eye on them all is Carl, Lil's middle-aged bachelor nephew with a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. But soon Rosehaven is turned upside down and the outcome is anyone's guess. Lil and the girls steal a car and hit the highway. L. Ray's vision of a national movement to unite churches and nursing homes (Nurches of America) is embraced by the residents. And then there's Darla Avery's dirty little secret, which could spell the end for the visionary preacher. Edgerton looks at the challenges of aging with sympathy, sensitivity, and his trademark sense of humor. Like the bestseller Walking Across Egypt, this is vintage Edgerton: wise, wistful, and laugh-out-loud funny.

A story set in Prague that crosses the lines between the living and the dead. The great love of your life is dead, but that doesn’t stop him from communicating with you—or luring you to join him in the afterlife. To remain safe in this world, you accept the help of a professional medium who develops his own emotional agenda. The Ghost Trio that emerges takes us to pre- and post-World War II Prague where a poignant and chilling love triangle finds its resolution. There we meet great Czech creators of the past including Leoš Janácek and Karel Capek. Inspired by the ghost stories of Henry James and Daphne du Maurier, Clyde Derrick introduces three characters whose passions defy time and the accepted boundaries between the dead and the living. The author, who has lived in and visited purportedly haunted sites in advance of writing this novella, contends that this story and its characters found him. Meanwhile, his portrayal of two Pragues—one poised to fall to Hitler’s army, the other muted by Communist oppression—offers us insights into the past and reminds us to stay vigilant against dangerous politics. The Ghost Trio is a spiritual excursion in which we ponder the limitations and hazards of romantic love as well as the possibility of other lives in other times. The Ghost Trio is the winner of the 2020 Omnidawn Fabulist Fiction Chapbook / Novelette Contest, chosen by Molly Gloss.

While editing the tribute book to poet Robert Sund (A Flutter of Birds Passing Through Heaven, 2016) I heard about "the other poet" in La Conner, Washington, Clyde Sanborn. Knowing nothing about him except that he lived and died like Li Po, I embarked on a journey to learn whatever I could. This tribute book is a rare treasury filled with memories, interviews, photos, as well as Clyde's handwritten poems and paintings. In the tradition of Li Po, Clyde Sanborn was our very own Zen poet, artist and river drifter. Not so long ago, he was a well known fixture in La Conner, but his story has never been told until now. This book provides an adventurous, inspired look at the struggle of an illuminated artist. It will be of interest to everyone else out there in the same boat.

Jake O'Day, otherwise known as Jake of Arabia (because of an unfortunate experience with an Arabian harem), was a private eye by choice-and he only liked very "choice" women: First there was voluptuous Mrs. Tamerlane, the 14th. In his wildest dreams even Jake couldn't have imagined anyone as wild as Mrs. T . . . But then there was Sugar, a sumptuous young thing who never wore clothes, never said a word, but who made all her desires quite clear . . . And still there were the insatiable Chinese Twins, those two action-stacked girls who initiated Jake into the Oriental subtleties of love-only the Twins weren't subtle . . .

During the first week of January, 2018, I received in the mail a New Year's greeting from Carol, my sister-in-law. After her well wishes for the coming year, she asked simply: What is your "take" on the end times? I was as eager to respond to her request as I was curious regarding what her request actually was. Carol is a faithful, dedicated Christian. She is familiar with the many biblical prophecies concerning things to come. It seemed to me that she was asking, given the occasion of the beginning of a new year, for a timely scriptural update. In other words: What's up? In my mind I re-phrased her question to read: Clyde, prophetically speaking, is anything going to happen in 2018 that I should be aware of?Actually, possibly so. The next prophetic event to occur on earth could indeed have taken place in 2018. God is proceeding according to the divine chronological plan He has had in mind from the beginning. That plan, righteous in nature and revealed to us in Scripture, indicates that human history is heading toward a climactic period of events. The timing of these coming events is in His hands, but current world conditions would warrant the next prediction taking place now, or in the immediate future. True, things could get worse, but they certainly seem bad enough already to necessitate God's sovereign intervention.A meaningful reply to Carol's implied question would include two efforts. One would be to examine the Bible's description of the next world-impacting event to occur. The other would be to place that event in the context of the scriptural big picture of the last days. With such an overview in mind of God's glorious plan to transition from the Church Age to the Kingdom Age, we would then be able to say as much as could be said about 2018, and beyond. My response to Carol's request was a series of letters mailed over an extended number of months. With her permission, those letters are now the chapters of this book. When writing each letter, my desire was, by the Lord's enabling, to be as much a source of encouragement as information. That is still my desire.

The "new song" refers to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and includes an invitation to all mankind to accept him as their Savior and Lord. Why then has there been a continuing history within the church of the exclusion of people on the basis of their race? These divisions, which were highlighted by Rev. Martin Luther-King in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, continue to exist not only in the church in the US but also in the UK. Sang traces the beginnings of the church, from Jesus's command to go out into all the world and make disciples of all nations to the ways in which that command was replaced. Significant influences from Greek philosophy to Roman colonialism infiltrated the church and caused it to compromise biblical truths. The church needs to take the lead and not just talk about healing without an acknowledgment of how we have failed to be obedient to Jesus's gospel. We need to repent and "do the works of repentance."

Monsignor Francis Pointek was called by many a "Priest's Priest". He lived for 101 years, serving as a priest in the vast California deserts and valleys for seventy four of those years. He followed in the footsteps of Father John Crowley, the legendary "Desert Padre". He was often dubbed by the same name. Monsignor Pointek was a priest of the people, "smelling like the sheep" long before that phrase came into vogue. He ministered to people where they were, in the mines, at the military bases, on the reservations, in the hospitals, in the homes, in the fields, in the detention camps. He was a doer, building four churches, two schools and a convent; always on limited funds, often with his own hands. He was a seeker of truth, even when the truth affected his popularity. He was a renegade, frequently choosing to act first and ask for permission and forgiveness later. This led to more than one disagreement with his bishop. Ultimately, his unconventional style led to an early forced retirement. But this didn't stop him, it didn't even slow him down. For the next forty-three years he served the people of Tehachapi, his adopted town, when and where he was needed. He ministered in the local parish, in the restaurants, in the stores, in the hospitals, in the homes, over his yard fence, from his beat up pickup truck. Arguably, his best ministry was conducted in his retirement years. He was driven by an immense love of God and his people. He was humble and lived in poverty, choosing only to emulate his hero, Jesus Christ. This is the story of Monsignor Francis Pointek, his legend and his legacy. His story is inspirational, the kind that we need in these crazy times. Monsignor Pointek, a priest for the ages.
