The fungus Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) is a generalist (broad-spectrum host range) insect pathogen able to infect nearly 1000 insect species. As for other entomopathogenic fungi of the order Hypocreales, the main route of infection for B. bassiana is the penetration of the insect cuticle, which represents the first encounter and barrier between the fungus and host. Upon the adhesion to and recognition of the insect surface, B. bassiana deploys a combination of biochemical and mechanical tools to make its way through the insect integument into the hemocoel. Once the fungus reaches this nutrient-rich environment, the mycelium switches to a specialized yeast-like cell phenotype; in invertebrate pathology, they are often referred as hyphal bodies or blastospores when they are produced artificially in culture media. At this stage, the insect host has very little chance of surviving the fungal infection despite the activation of the immune response (humoral and cellular) as a last-ditch attempt to overcome the fungus.

Known simply as A & R, it is the standard listing of the clandestine vernacular output of English Catholics during that period. Now, after more than thirty years work, Allison and Rogers have produced a substantially updated, comprehensive catalogue to be published in two interlocking volumes. This first volume describes books which are linked to specific English Catholic writers, including translators and editors, or to various English bodies, and nearly two hundred other publications which concern English Catholic affairs. This is an annotated bibliography of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England at a time when Catholic printing was prohibited in England and such books, when discovered by the authorities, were seized and destroyed. It includes all the 930 items listed in the authors' A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English..., 1956 (A&R) except for a handful which, for reasons of consistency, were described in volume I of the present work (Scolar Press, 1989), and it adds a further twenty-five on which information has come to light more recently. The annotations, historical, literary and bibliographical, are very much fuller than those in A&R and include a vast amount of evidence now brought together for the first time. The true authors of many anonymous and pseudonymous books are identified and many books issued with a false imprint, or no imprint at all, are assigned to particular presses. In each entry, up to fifteen locations are given where known. A concordance links the entries with those in A&R to facilitate cross-reference from one to the other, and indexes of titles, printers and publishers, and persons (including foreign authors) mentioned in the text are provided. The volume concludes with a short list of Addenda and Corrigenda to volume I.

This new book illustrates the complex nature of ecotoxicological issues, using pesticides as an example. It focuses on the assessment and monitoring of the amounts of pollutants in the environment and the subsequent damage. The text provides the basic information and methodology to help the reader determine the extent of ecological damage caused by a given substance. Legislatures in industrialized countries have taken the initiative in dealing with these issues by formulating new priorities for environmental protection. Applied Ecotoxicology describes these regulatory efforts, which are separated by their two distinct objectives: those that seek to expand the scope of protection against the pollutants' negative impacts, and those shifting the level of investigation from the individual to the ecosystem. Pollutants are only one of a number of different environmental factors to which organisms are exposed. Their impact in the field is presented in the context of other forms of human intervention in the environment. The increasing use of pesticides in tropical regions, a growing ecotoxicological concern in these countries, is also discussed.
