Sulla scia del quattrocentesimo anno dalla pubblicazione del trattato del Carrera la presente opera restituisce in notazione moderna con i relativi diagrammi la teoria dei vantaggi esposta nel libro quinto de "Il gioco degli scacchi" in comparazione con il Damiano, il Ruy Lopez, il Gianutio e il Salvio, contribuendo in tal modo ad una maggiore conoscenza del trattatista siciliano e dei contenuti del suo trattato a livello sia nazionale che internazionale. Inoltre tale lavoro costituisce un indubbio passo in avanti rispetto all'ottocentesca traduzione inglese del suddetto libro del trattato ad opera di William Lewis nel 1822. Nel quinto libro, diviso in 31 capitoli, il chierico siciliano esamina in dettaglio le relative aperture con tratto al Nero o al Bianco in base al tipo di vantaggio dato al giocatore pi debole.
