There is a war fought within each of us. What folk see on the outside is nothing like what is happening inside. The smile we put on, the clean haircut/hairdo, the pressed clothes... all covering the wounds, scars, and hidden weapons. My hope is that whoever reads "Switchin' Over" will have a push to be free of what binds them, and not think that whatever incarcerates them is how their story ends. I pray that the one that possesses this book will gain or regain a strategy to come out of where they are, and to know they are not alone. There is a way out. I hope that this book helps drive out the darkness and depression that haunts and torments the mind. We all have come from dark places or backgrounds, and I pray that my transparency will be a support in the battle that rages within.

Pier Giorgio Frassati is situated in the social and political upheaval of early-twentieth-century Italy. The Roman Catholic Church read the warning signs of atheistic Marxism; Mussolini filled Italy's political vacuum with fascists; and Rome was still Italy's disputed capital. The biography draws from a synopsis of selected letters and witness accounts, revealing Pier Giorgio's increasing engagement with the world around him, shaped by his spiritual life. Pier Giorgio belonged to an upper-middle-class family and his parents transmitted fundamental values of truth, courage, and justice. Although he was deeply loved by his parents, they did not share his religious zeal. Pier Giorgio was concerned about helping the poor in the slums of Turin, the needy German students in Berlin, but especially in contributing to world peace. His spiritual maturity was expressed by making sacrifices: his friendship with a young lady offered up, bidding farewell to his best friend leaving for the Air Force, watching his sister depart once married, and his career in mining engineering abandoned. Pier Giorgio stood alone. He remained at home for the good of his parents to ensure peace and unity. He died at twenty-four years old.

David Wilson didn't know where to turn when his wife, Chris, was in the depths of clinical depression, brought on by chronic fatigue syndrome and anorexia. In despair he entered an empty church and said a simple prayer: ""I have no power to affect anything in my life, but you have the power. If you help me, I will serve you."" From then on, their lives began to change. A prayer group contacted them and through the power of prayer, Chris's condition began to improve. At the same time she found herself developing remarkable gifts of prophecy. The author embarked on a theology course, enabling him to look at what had happened to him and to Chris with a new perspective. Is there, he wondered, a link between depression and spiritual awareness? The author looks at the lives of Elijah and other Old Testament prophets and notes how signs of depression coincided with spiritual insights. This fascinating and thought-provoking book is the story of a couple's spiritual journey, as well as a profound meditation on the connection between depression and prophecy.

Our rational nature is to ask questions and to understand. We piece together childhood events, relationships, connection with nature, expressions of culture, and human fragility. What does it all mean? The collection of poems, Age of Innocence, starts off with childhood where the child is shielded from the world. The encounter with nature opens the path to metaphysical reflection while relations undergo reanalysis, reassurance, and rejection. Cultures may surprise and delight, but also confuse and disturb. What is the emotional ""impact"" over time? Innocence is progressively shattered as one discovers poverty, loneliness, and discrimination. The adult becomes the innocent ""patient."" Is there refuge behind clinic doors? Fragmented, the person blurs reality and illusion and seeks healing.

Practical Politics for Local Agency Board Members illustrates that good internal and external relations are essential for political success. Political success requires engaging some political principles and practices to achieve beneficial outcomes and establish good relationships. The metaphorical use of a compass, navigation, and the terrain is employed to explain the application of practical politics in various situations. Using these techniques, local agency board members can determine their specific location and identify their internal and external political landmarks. Once these landmarks are identified and defined, the board member applies the elements of Practical Politics to navigate to political success.

20 Dictators Currently Supported by the U.S.

The U.S. government has a habit of supporting brutal (and comically outrageous) dictators. This book offers 20 current examples, together with some background on historical patterns, some explanation for why this happens, and a proposal to put an end to it.As documented here, the U.S. government arms, trains, and funds all variety of oppressive governments, not just dictatorships. The choice to focus on dictatorships in this book was not made merely to shorten the list. Rather, that choice was made because the U.S. government so often claims to be opposing dictators through the promotion of democracy. Frequently, the atrocious conduct of a dictator is a central selling point for a new war or coup or program of sanctions.Yet neither Saddam Hussein's horrific (though fictional) removal of babies from incubators nor Manuel Noriega's cavorting in red underwear with prostitutes while snorting cocaine and praying to voodoo gods (as the New York Times solemnly informed us on December 26, 1989) rivals the moral horror or the glorious goofiness of the 20 tyrants described in this book.No one will be able to read this and believe that a primary purpose of U.S. foreign policy is to oppose dictatorships or to promote democracy. If it is important to you to try to believe that, you've probably already stopped reading.
