Die Einführung der Direktwahl der Bürgermeister in Nordrhein-Westfalen konnte als einschneidende Veränderung des institutionellen Rahmens gewertet werden. Dieses Buch verfolgt zwei Ziele. Es ist erstens eine ausführliche Bestandsaufnahme der Bürgermeisterwahlen 1999 und 2004 im Vergleich zu den gleichzeitig stattfindenden Ratswahlen. Zweitens geht es um die Frage, ob sich aufgrund des institutionellen Wandels der Einfluss von Parteien bei Kommunalwahlen verringert, oder ob er aufgrund der parlamentarisch-parteienfreundlichen Tradition von Kommunalpolitik gleich bleibt. Obwohl die Bedeutung von Wählergruppen und Einzelbewerbern deutlich zugenommen hat, bleibt Nordrhein-Westfalen auch nach den ersten beiden Runden der Bürgermeisterwahlen das „Mutterland der Parteipolitisierung“ von Kommunalwahlen.

This monograph is concerned with mathematical aspects of compartmental an alysis. In particular, linear models are closely analyzed since they are fully justifiable as an investigative tool in tracer experiments. The objective of the monograph is to bring the reader up to date on some of the current mathematical prob lems of interest in compartmental analysis. This is accomplished by reviewing mathematical developments in the literature, especially over the last 10-15 years, and by presenting some new thoughts and directions for future mathematical research. These notes started as a series of lectures that I gave while visiting with the Division of Applied ~1athematics, Brown University, 1979, and have developed in to this collection of articles aimed at the reader with a beginning graduate level background in mathematics. The text can be used as a self-paced reading course. With this in mind, exercises have been appropriately placed throughout the notes. As an aid in reading the material, the e~d of a proof is indicated by ~. Sub section titles are utilized to make it easier for the reader to skim over detailed material on a first reading and make the entire manuscript somewhat more accessible, especially to nonmathematicians in the biosciences. Semisolid metallurgy (SSM) is now some 37-years-old in terms of time from its conception and ?rst reduction to practice in the laboratory. In the intervening years, there has been a steadily growing body of research on the subject and the beginning of signi?cant industrial applications. The overall ?eld of SSM comprises today a large number of speci?c process routes, almost all of which fall in the category of either “Rheocasting” or Thi- casting.” The former begins with liquid metal and involves agitation during partial solidi?cation followed by forming. The latter begins with solid metal of suitable structure and involves heating to the desired fraction solid and forming. Research over the past 37 years, and particularly over the last decade, has provided a detailed picture of process fundamentals and led to a wide range of speci?c SSM processes and process innovations. Industrial studies and actual p- duction experience are providing a growing picture of the process advantages and limitations. At this time, the conditions for eventual wide adoption of SSM appear favorable, both for nonferrous and ferrous alloys. It must, however, be recognized that major innovations, such as SSM become adopted only slowly by industries where capital costsarehigh,pro?tmarginsaremodest,andfailuretomeetcustomercommitments carries a high penalty.
