Culture Trumps Strategy: Achieving High Performance Through People
This is David Smith's much requested second business book, which utilises his 7 principles of building a high performance culture. In this book, David has interviewed numerous CEOs and discusses how they have developed high performance cultures. His storytelling brings the subject alive, and the lessons of the book are practical, simple and arresting. There is a body of evidence to suggest that 'switched on' leaders are producing great results from cultural stimuli. David has made his book deliberately shorter than his first - since he recognises that busy people, in the age of Twitter, have limited time to read.

Perhaps more than any other religion Hinduism is associated in the modern mind with the erotic. "The Kama Sutra" and the sexual activity portrayed in stone at the great medieval Indian temple complex of Khajuraho are renowned the world over. The classical Hindu exploration of eroticism is manifestly one of the supreme expressions of the human spirit. Hindu sculpture, defined as uniquely able to express inner states of being, is no less able to portray the beauty of eroticism. At the same time, many Hindus see their religion rising above the world of the senses and deprecate western enthusiasm for a perceived erotic India. In this important book David Smith explores the true significance of Hindu eroticism. He shows that while withdrawal from the senses is a major component of Hinduism, it is precisely because the Hindu appreciation of the power of the senses is so very refined that asceticism developed in India as a counter-reaction. He argues that so varied, extensive and diffused is the Hindu idea of the erotic that it is central to understanding the inner heart of Hinduism. Profound and stimulating in equal measure, and illustrated throughout by some of the greatest examples of Hindu erotic art, "The Hindu Erotic" will be essential reading for anyone interested in Indian religion, sexuality, and South Asian culture.

Hidden Conversations introduces Robert Langs radical reinterpretation of psychoanalysis by presenting and expanding his ideas in new and accessible ways. It is the first clear account of the theories underlying Langs approach, placing them within the context of the history of psychoanalysis and showing, for example, that Freud nearly discovered the communicative approach in the late 1890s, and that in the 1930s Ferenczi also anticipated the method. David Livingstone Smith illustrates this communicative approach with a wealth of practical detail and clinical examples, including verbatim accounts of communicative psychoanalytical sessions with a commentary on the unconscious processes underlying them.

Nation-Building and Minority Politics in Post-Socialist States

Nation-Building and Minority Politics in Post-Socialist States

Despite socialism's best efforts, ethnic identity remained a salient feature in Central and Eastern Europe. Not only did ethno-nationalism help to bring about the fall of the socialist regimes in this region, but it also characterized much of the post-socialist politics. Nation-Building and Minority Politics examines the issue of minority politics in post-socialist states within this dual structure. In particular, it offers an in-depth analysis of post-restoration politics in Estonia and Latvia, covering four issues. First, it looks at the historical context of the current group relations. Second, the study explores the domestic nature of minority politics in Estonia and Latvia by looking at domestic politics and policies. Third, it examines the role of the Russian Federation as an 'external national homeland' through illustrating developments within Russian foreign policy. Finally, the book analyses the role of three significant European organizations, namely the OSCE, EU and the Council of Europe as agents of 'conditionality'.Overall, this study combines old and new theoretical approaches to nation-building and minority politics to exhibit the changing nature of the relationship between majority, minority, external national homeland, and international organizations in today's Europe.
Ministry by Teenagers

Ministry by Teenagers

"What would happen if we gave teenagers opportunities to serve and use their gifts in ministry prior to high school graduation? What if we poured into these young leaders, discipling them and doing ministry alongside of them, helping them grow spiritually, seeing and experiencing God working through them? What if we eased back on our ministry to students, supplementing it with ministry by students?" These compelling questions are at the heart of Ministry by Teenagers, and once authors McKee and Smith lay out the "what ifs" they combine their collective experience in youth ministry to provide a practical and detailed guide for "how to." The book is jam-packed with ideas, advice, and resources for: - Fostering discipleship - Building student leadership teams - Identifying student talent - Helping students discover and use their spiritual gifts - Creating service teams - Equipping students to reach their friends It's a must-have tool for youth workers who want to tap the gold mine of talent, passion, and leadership potential they see every day in young Christians.

Risks and Opportunities

First published in 1995. Managing today’s rapidly changing environment inevitably involves managing conflicts between the demands of development and conservation; the needs of the present and of the future; and between different community interests, professional positions and political priorities. Risks and Opportunities provides both a guide to managing environmental change, and a training manual to pave the way to successful conflict resolution. It explores the full range of potential conflicts and looks at various methods for their resolution. It covers the who, what, why and when of managing change, and emphasizes the need to develop an active and strategic approach which indemnifies the interests and abilities of all the stakeholders. The book’s detailed case studies provide in-depth material on the conflicting uses of urban, agricultural and natural environments, and the self-teaching guide and exercises will enable individual readers and organizations to acquire the necessary practical and team-building skills.
