Includes CD-Rom 'Intriguing and timely...I whole heartedly recommend this text to teacher educators and their trainees, certainly across English and the Arts, but arguably to all engaged in considering critical pedagogy across the curriculum' - ESCalate `This is a very timely book, firmly rooted in authentic, albeit visionary, classroom practice, that has much to offer to teachers of all subjects, but should be particularly welcomed by English and media colleagues' - English Drama Media `Heaving with ideas...outstanding lesson ideas and inspiring work from students' - The Secondary English Magazine `I really enjoyed working my way through this book...The book is accompanied by a DVD organised into chapters which correspond to those in the book, and it was great to see the ideas and schemes referred to in the text come alive. The schemes have been included which makes it even easier to adapt the work to fit the technology and resources available in your own school..All teachers of media would benefit from browsing this book' - Learning & Teaching Update This book is for secondary English, Media, and ICT teachers who want to develop practical media work and media literacy across the curriculum. It is ideal for secondary English and media teachers and curriculum leaders in secondary schools, as well as ICT teachers and co-ordinators, PCGE English/Media students, and researchers working on media, English and ICT projects. A range of case studies are presented which show how digital media work, from video editing to computer game authoring, can be developed in schools, drawing on children's own cultural knowledge. It also shows the benefits of such projects in terms of learning outcomes and increased self-esteem for a range of learners. The book comes with a CD-Rom of children's work from the various case study projects, exhibiting the high standard of moving image work, animations and computer games that can be produced with the help of this text. With an integrated approach drawing together practice, theory and research, the book will help teachers to plan for and develop their own media projects in school. It offers advice on integrating media work across the curriculum (in English and media classes as well as in ICT and citizenship), and presents a model of progression which shows how learning can develop from the first years of secondary school through to GCSE level. In line with current government initiatives to open up curriculum boundaries, the book shows how to plan for longer periods of time for these projects.

This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics." Physics of Atmosphere and Ocean

The core of this book consists of essays originally posted on the blog of the Cold War and Internal Security (CWIS) Collection, belonging to Academic Library Services, East Carolina University. The end result is a collection of 24 self-contained chapters, organized into five chronological/topical sections, covering various aspects of the efforts of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and other 20th Century congressional committees investigating real or alleged subversion. These entries have been revised, updated, and merged as needed. There is also an introductory essay that explores the broader history of congressional countersubversive investigations. Each brief essay contains its own list of sources. The entries span a variety of topics from the birth of congressional countersubversive investigations in the First World War and aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, all the way up to Russian election influence efforts in 2016-2020, and congressional investigations of white nationalism. Topics covered in-between include the origins of the House Un-American Activities Committee, the tragic injustice that was the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War Two, various aspects of McCarthyism and the Red Scare, especially the role of congressional committees such as HUAC, the 1960 Martin/Mitchell affair, the Black Panthers, and aspects of the broader Cold War espionage and political/information struggle. This volume is intended to provide an overview and guide to further research for students, members of the public, and professional scholars.
Human-made climate change may have begun in the last two hundred years, but our species has witnessed many eras of climate instability. The results have not always been pretty. From Ancient Egypt to Rome to the Maya, some of history's mightiest civilizations have been felled by pestilence and glacial melt and drought. The challenges are no less great today. We face hurricanes and megafires and food shortages and more. But we have one powerful advantage as we face our current crisis: the past. Our knowledge of ancient climates has advanced tremendously in the last decade, to the point where we can now reconstruct seasonal weather going back thousands of years and see just how people and nature interacted. The lesson is clear: the societies that survive are those that plan ahead.Climate Chaos is a book about saving ourselves. Brian Fagan and Nadia Durrani show in remarkable detail what it was like to battle our climate over centuries and offer us a path to a safer and healthier future.
From HARVEY AWARD nominee and award winning writer and artist Don Lomax. Based on the true story of an American spy in Vietnam as told to Don Lomax by agent Robert Durand who chronicles the tale. Durand was a member of a black-ops team, code-named "Shining Brass." This graphic novel depicts the horrific atrocities witnessed and performed by the once naive special forces member as he attempts to perform his duties and understand the true meaning behind the madness. Durand's group was under the command of a combined force, comprised of every branch of the services, and headed up by the ever-popular Central Intelligence Committee. This book is a journey into a shadow world of treachery and deceit--and reveals the way lives of Americans were traded about carelessly during the war in Vietnam. Collects the complete High Shining Brass comic book series issues 1-4.
By the Cold War's end, U.S. military bases harbored nearly 20,000 toxic waste sites. All told, cleaning the approximately 27 million acres is projected to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. And yet while progress has been made, efforts to integrate environmental and national security concerns into the military's operations have proven a daunting and intrigue-filled task that has fallen short of professed goals in the post-Cold War era. In "The Greening of the U.S. Military", Robert F. Durant delves into this too-little understood world of defense environmental policy to uncover the epic and ongoing struggle to build an environmentally sensitive culture within the post-Cold War military. Through over 100 interviews and thousands of pages of documents, reports, and trade newsletter accounts, he offers a telling tale of political, bureaucratic, and intergovernmental combat over the pace, scope, and methods of applying environmental and natural resource laws while ensuring military readiness. He then discerns from these clashes over principle, competing values, and narrow self-interest a theoretical framework for studying and understanding organizational change in public organizations. From Dick Cheney's days as Defense Secretary under President George H.W. Bush to William Cohen's Clinton-era-tenure and on to Donald Rumsfeld's Pentagon, the battle over "greening" the military has been one with high-stakes consequences for both national defense and public health, safety, and the environment. Durant's polity-centered perspective and arguments will evoke needed scrutiny, debate, and dialogue over these issues in environmental, military, policymaking, and academic circles.
Christ is such an inexhaustible fountain that sinners cannot ever out desire His mercies. He is an overflowing fountain of infinite mercy and comfort. All other temporal mercies find their eternal significance in him. Nothing will delight the sincere believer, or be enjoyed, if such believers do not in some way partake of His comfort, and His tenderness. They must tap into Christ's virtue. How will they do this? Durant's discourse explores the sweetness of Christ's relationship with weak believers, addressing various aspects of this theme. He shows the fallacy of Satan to keep souls from Christ; and the sweetness of Christ to those in His service. His work is taken from Isaiah 40:11, "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young." The structure of the discourse includes the dependence of the words, their division, and the doctrines derived from them. His main doctrine, is that central teaching presented, emphasizes Christ's sweetness in His dealings with weak members. Most Christians will not admit they are weak. And the idea of the word "weak" seems to be negative. But Durant's work reaches to all Christians. He shows that Christ's carriage, and the sweetness of that carriage, is demonstrated in not casting off weak believers, but that He preserves their weak graces, strengthens them, bears with their infirmities, not burdening them with tasks they can't handle, and accepts their efforts despite failings. These reasons are drawn from God the Father's commission to Christ, the truth of the inherent weakness in believers, and Christ's intention to build them up as his lambs. The discourse concludes with applications for information, lamentation, reproof, comfort, encouragement, imitation, and exhortation.
"Christ's Compassion in Our Trials" is a weighty exploration of the struggles and discouragements that Christians may face when approaching Christ for help, as illustrated through the historical narrative of the Canaanite woman. Authored by Puritan John Durant (1620-1686), this work offers a deeply rooted theological perspective grounded in Scripture, particularly focusing on the interaction between Christ and the Canaanite woman found in Matthew 15:21-28. In this historical narrative, Durant emphasizes that, much like the Canaanite woman, Christians often encounter feelings of inadequacy and discouragement as they seek help from Christ. The woman approaches Jesus, fully aware of her unworthiness as a Gentile, yet her desperation for her daughter's healing drives her to persist in faith. Durant illustrates that despite her initial rejection and the seemingly harsh words of Christ-who initially does not respond to her pleas-her unwavering faith ultimately prevails. He captures the essence of her faith as she boldly claims her need for mercy, which serves as a model for believers facing their own challenges and obstacles. Durant further expounds on several key themes drawn from the Scriptures, including the idea that the prayers and faith of believing parents hold significant weight in seeking mercy for their children. He highlights the truth found in 1 Timothy 4:8, where godliness is said to have promise for the present life and that which is to come, encouraging readers to persist in their petitions to God. By relating the woman's experience to their own lives, Durant reassures believers that their struggles and feelings of discouragement are not uncommon, and he encourages them to press on in faith. Throughout the text, Durant provides practical guidance on how to navigate these discouragements. He urges believers to examine the lawfulness of their requests, the condition of their hearts, and their motives when approaching Christ. He posits that faith is not merely about the outcome but about the relationship established through prayer and supplication. Durant's insights invite readers to understand that even when circumstances appear dire or when prayers seem unanswered, God's compassion and mercy remain ever-present. In sum, "Christ's Compassion in Our Trials" serves as both a theological treatise and a source of encouragement for believers. By studying the interaction between Christ and the Canaanite woman, Durant masterfully illustrates the perseverance of faith amid discouragement. He provides a compelling reminder that, regardless of the challenges faced, coming to Christ with sincerity and faith can lead to spiritual and physical blessings. The narrative not only comforts those who are struggling but also reaffirms the enduring promise that Christ is accessible to all who earnestly seek Him, a message that resonates powerfully through the ages.

Tested is about truly seeking God and being an example of His love, no matter what. It is written for those who consistently desire to be better persons by following Christ's example, and who have been beat up by the world as well as inside the church while doing so. My intention is not to bash anyone who is on a spiritual growth path, but to expose the actions of those of us who claim to have given our lives to Christ in order to help edify us as a body that we may understand how to implement the second greatest commandment as well as the first, and to enlighten hearts and minds to a better understanding of God's relentless love for us as it appears in our everyday lives. Exposing, edifying, and enlightening...that is what TESTED is intended to do.
