As the Commander of U.S. Central Command, General Frank McKenzie oversaw some of the most important — and controversial operations in modern U.S. military history. He had direct operational responsibility for the strikes on Qassem Soleimani and two successive leaders of ISIS, the many months of deterrence operations against Iran and its proxies, and the methodical drawdown in Iraq. He directed the noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan, and our final withdrawal from that tortured country. The Melting Point has three themes. The first one is the importance of the primacy of civilian control of the military. It has become a widely perceived truth that this control has been eroded over the past few years. General McKenzie doesn’t believe that to be the case, and he speaks with some authority on the matter arguing that the civ-mil relationship isn’t perfect or frictionless, but it doesn’t have to be, and probably shouldn’t be. It is, however, more durable than many believe, and is supported and embraced by the military to a degree that some critics do not choose to recognize. The second theme is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander. Combatant commanders participate in the development of policy, although as junior partners. They are also responsible for the execution of policy once civilian leaders have formulated their decision, a unique position, and very different than the role of a service chief, or even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. None of these officers are in the chain of command, and they have no ultimate, mortal responsibility or authority for execution. Only the combatant commander stands astride the boundary of decision-making and execution. Finally, the third theme that McKenzie argues is that leaders matter, and the decisions they make have a profound effect on what happens on the battlefield. McKenzie provides an honest assessment of his time in command—describing decisions that were sound, as well as some outcomes he wishes were different. He offers a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.

The specific and greatly multi- plied immune response is decisive for the outcome of the disease. Current knowledge shows that the immune system gets involved and potentiates a progressive neuronal degeneration in two ways, which are not mutually exclusive. First, provided the immunogenic autologous protein occurs in the interstitial fluid of CNS in amounts which cannot be phagocytized and cleared by the leptomeningeal macrophages, it reaches the cervical lymph nodes passively along the perivascular spaces, the cerebrospinal fluid compartment above the cribriform plate, and the lymphatics of the nasal mucosa (Cserr and Ostrach 1974; Weller et al. 1992; Zhang et al. 1992; Kida et al. 1993). The immunological significance of this "late" pathway typical for advanced neurodegeneration has been confirmed by Harling-Berg et al. (1989), who showed that the cervical lymph nodes are the main site of antibody production against foreign protein injected into the central gray matter of the rat brain.

Ihre Berticksichtigung ist bei der Messung der absoluten und differentiellen Empfindlichkeit des Auges, seines Auflosevermogens, der Dynamik der Adaptation und anderer Parameter des visuellen Systems ebenso wie bei der Untersuchung von Prozessen der Aufdeckung von Unterschieden, det Erkennung visueller Signale, ihrer metrischen Einschatzung, der Tatigkeit des Be- obachtens usw. notwendig. In psychologischen und psychophysiologischen Untersuchungen des Sehens wird der Untersuchung der Augenbewegungen eine tiberaus wesentliche Bedeutung zu- erkannt. Diese Bewegungen werden ais untrennbare Komponenten des visuellen Pro- zesses angesehen. Oberdies wird in Ietzter Zeit immer haufiger versucht, Methoden der Registrierung der Augenbewegungen in die Untersuchung von solchen Formen der Tatigkeit des Menschen einzubeziehen, deren Verbindung mit dem Sehen nicht unmittelbar ist (zum Beispiel das Losen von mnemischen und intellektuellen Auf- gaben). Die Frage nach den Funktionen und Mechanismen der Augenbewegungen be- sitzt zweifellos Aktualitat, da von ihrer Losung Ansatze zur Untersuchung sowohl von Parametern des visuellen Systems als auch perzeptiver, mnemischer, intellek- tueller und anderer Prozesse abhangen, die mit dem Sehen entweder in unmittel- barer oder mittel barer Beziehung stehen. In dem vorliegenden Sammelband werden unterschiedliche Aspekte des Pro- blems der motorischen Komponenten des Sehens betrachtet und verschiedene Ansatze zum Verstandnis der Mechanismen und Funktionen der Augenbewegungen und auch ihrer Rolle in einigen Formen der Tatigkeit des Menschen vorgestellt.
